What places become visible beyond the territorial definitions of British settler colony and 'White Australia'? What past geographies could we reconstruct through historical prose? From the 1860s there emerged a circuit of camels, ships and trains connecting Australian deserts to the Indian Ocean world and British Indian ports. Aboriginal traders and travellers moving along railway lines, British Indian seafarers jumping ship at Australian ports, Muslim merchants and peddlers working camel tracks across deserts, left in their trail a rich archive of materials in their own languages. Whilst transnational history has emerged as a burgeoning area of writing in Australia, scholars have rarely engaged with materials beyond the English record. In this thesis I show that non-English language sources offer immense possibilities to take historical writing in Australia beyond the conceptual spaces of colony and nation. Examining South Asian and Aboriginal language records, in each chapter of this thesis I grapple with the pragmatic and conceptual challenges presented by working with a range of languages. Following the lead of postcolonial theorists I use and extend 'translation' as a productive metaphor for the methodologies necessary to discipline non-English language materials into historical scholarship in English. Examining a Bengali book of poetry, a Kuyani place-name, an Urdu memoir, Arabunna, Dhirarri and Dieri stories, an Arabic root word and Wangkangurru song­ poetry within the same analytic framework presents significant challenges. Yet a 2 circuitry of camels, ships and trains brought speakers of these languages into close, regular contact, intricately threading together Aboriginal lives, families and livelihoods with those of Indian Ocean travellers. Using a place-oriented framework to bring South Asian and Aboriginal language materials together, I map the multifaceted interconnections between the geographies of modernity inhabited by speakers of various tongues. With a twin analytical focus on language and place, in this thesis I treat 'translation' not only as a process of change between languages, but as a schema of physical mobility between places. Exploring multiple meanings of the word 'translation,' in this thesis I propose a palette of tentative solutions to the challenges of working with South Asian and Aboriginal language sources in the Australian context. Drawing upon the insights generated by scholars of Aboriginal history and postcolonial theory, this thesis extends the productive challenges they pose to the field of transnational history in Australia and offers significant contributions to Indian Ocean studies. It looks at the co-operation between Special Operations Australia, Special Operations Executive of Britain and the US Officeof Strategic Services and their actions with and against each other during the Pacific War. Based on hithertounused archival sources, it argues that the cancellation of 'Kingfisher' - and the failure to rescue the Sandakan prisoners - can be explained by the motivations, decisions and actions of particular British officers in the interplay of the wartime alliance. The politics of wartime alliances played out at both the level of grand strategy but also in interaction between officers within the planning headquarters in the Southwest Pacific Area, with severe implications for those most directly affected.     Reconciliation Action Plan 2018 – 2020 Underwater Garden by Timeisha Simpson Timeisha Simpson is an emerging artist from Port Lincoln who has exhibited both on the West Coast and in Adelaide. She was studying in Year 9 when she created this work as part of Port Lincoln High School’s (PLHS) Aboriginal Arts Program. The PLHS Arts Program is an outlet for young artists to express themselves creatively. Local artist Jenny Silver has been working with the Arts Program for some time and has built strong relationships with all of the participating young artists. Many of the art works produced explore connections with culture, identity, family and place. It provides opportunities for the artists to be part of exhibitions across the state and their success at these exhibitions has created positive discussions with the wider community. An important aspect of the program is the emphasis on enterprise and the creation of individual artist portfolios. Jenny worked with Timeisha to create Underwater Garden, an acrylic painting that celebrates the richness and health of the water around Port Lincoln. Both artists spend a lot of time in the ocean and chose seaweed to represent growth and movement. Timeisha and Jenny developed authentic relationships with the community while on country which was integral in initial ideation for this piece. Timeisha says, ”The painting celebrates all the different bright coloured seaweeds in the ocean, I see these seaweeds when I go diving, snorkelling and fishing at the Port Lincoln National Park with my friends and family. I really enjoy going to Engine Point because that is where we go diving and snorkelling off the rocks, and for fishing we go to Salmon Hole and other cliff areas”.
