10 ABOUT ROSALIND FRANKLIN UNIVERSITY

2,123 STUDENTS · 30+ PROGRAMS · 1 UNIVERSITY

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS IN OUR DNA Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU) is named for Dr. Rosalind Franklin, the pioneering British researcher who captured “Photograph 51” of the “B” form of DNA in 1952 while at King’s College London. This photograph revealed the structure of DNA, the key to understanding how the blueprint for every living thing is passed down from generation to generation.

Today, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science carries on her legacy of inquiry, diligence and academic excellence. Formed in 1912 as the Chicago -College of Medicine, the university is a national leader in interprofessional medical and healthcare education.

OUR MISSION The mission of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is to serve humanity through the interprofessional education of health and biomedical professionals, and the discovery of knowledge dedicated to improving wellness. Today, the university is shaping the future of health care through rigorous education, pioneering biomedical research and innovative community service.

OUR VISION The vision of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is to be the premier interprofessional health sciences university. Sharing our accomplishments and contributing to the evidence base for science, interprofessional education and practice will help build a safer, more responsive, coordinated system of patient care, prevention and wellness.

OUR CORE VALUES Civility · Diversity · Excellence · Innovation · Integrity · Scholarship · Teamwork

THE RFU DIFFERENCE

INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

At Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, we believe in breaking down academic barriers. We take an interprofessional approach to education, so our students learn from and work with peers in other specializations from the beginning of their time here.

That’s especially important, as healthcare teams play an increasingly vital role in medicine. At RFU, we prepare students for the future by integrating collaboration and teamwork into education. Having more than 30 graduate health professions and science programs in one university creates great opportunities to do that.

Additionally, each first-year student in our clinical programs takes the Foundations for Interprofessional Practice course during the fall quarter. This class, which acts as the foundation for an integrated interprofessional education experience, brings students from all academic programs together to learn from one another, get oriented to the culture of health care and start interacting in small, interprofessional teams.

107th COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATION 11 “SCIENCE AND EVERYDAY LIFE CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT BE SEPARATED.”

DR. ROSALIND FRANKLIN CENTENNIAL BIRTHDAY | 1920–2020

12 HONORING DR. ROSALIND FRANKLIN

DR. FRANKLIN’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE IMPROVED THE HUMAN CONDITION AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. AS WE CELEBRATE THE CLASS OF 2021’S MANY ACHIEVEMENTS, LET US ALSO REFLECT ON THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF OUR UNIVERSITY’S NAMESAKE.

DISCOVERING THE DOUBLE HELIX

Dr. Franklin was focused on discovering the structure of DNA during her research fellowship at King’s College in London in 1952. Working in close collaboration with graduate student Raymond Gosling, Dr. Franklin used X-ray crystallography to produce an image known as Photo 51 — because it was the 51st diffracted image they captured — that revealed the double helix structure of DNA and paved the way for countless innovations and advances in medicine and science.

In April 1953, Dr. Franklin published her findings in the scientific journal Nature. In that same issue, Cambridge scientists James Watson and Francis Crick announced their double helix model of DNA. It’s not clear if Dr. Franklin knew that her unpublished research had helped inspire and construct the model. At the beginning of that year, Gosling showed Photo 51 to Dr. Franklin’s colleague Dr. Maurice Wilkins, who in turn showed it to Watson.

A LASTING LEGACY

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 1956, Dr. Franklin continued to work and travel during periods of remission. She continued to push for financing for her research group at Birkbeck College, which had been asked to build models of viruses for the Brussels World’s Fair. She died at age 37 on April 16, 1958, the day before the opening of the fair, where the five foot-tall models drew great interest in the International Science Hall.

The discovery of the structure of DNA sparked a revolution in the biological sciences. The field of molecular biology was born, leading to countless advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Though Dr. Franklin’s brilliant career was cut short by her untimely death, the importance of her work is recognized to this day.

In 2004, our university was renamed as Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and became the first medical institution in the to recognize a female scientist through an honorary namesake. Her iconic “Photo 51” is at the center of the university’s logo.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth in 2020, we created a gold-colored “Rosalind Franklin 100” logo that we’ve used during our centennial celebration of Dr. Franklin and her groundbreaking discovery. We invite you to visit our “RF100” digital experience at rfu.ms/rf100 to learn more about Dr. Franklin’s accomplishments and her many contributions to science.
