Résultats d'un projet de recherche réalisé par le Centre de recherche du Musée national d'histoire naturelle à Luxembourg. Results of a research project conducted by the research centre of the National Museum of Natural History in Luxembourg. 1. L’intérêt du projet Les forêts forment un élément paysager primordial au Luxembourg, anciennent intitulé "département des forêts". L'évolution récente de la sylviculture, notamment la pratique de la monoculture et l'enré- sinement, a provoqué une crise écologique parmi certaines biocénoses sylvicoles. D'un autre côté, il faut mentionner que l'exploitation de nos forêts pendant des siècles, était négative au sens des sylviculteurs, mais pourtant à l'origine d'habitats maigres et à structures forestières très ouvertes, et ainsi particulièrement favorable au dévelop- pement d'espèces adaptées plutôt à ces condi- tions. Certaines formes, comme le taillis ardennais (Louhhecken) sont considérées aujourd'hui comme des habitats anthropogènes de première importance écologique. La création des administrations forestières publiques a provoqué une certaine intensification sylvicole, autant pour la forêt domaniale et communale que privée, avec les résultats prés-cités. Très récemment, et par l'évolution de notre société, ces mêmes administrations ont été forcées à accepter que leur rôle n'est pas de couvrir le pays de surfaces "boisées" sans tenir compte de considérations écologiques, mais qu'il est primordial d'adapter la gestion et la reconversion des écosystèmes forestiers à l'image Fig. 1: Vue de la forêt devant les falaises de grès. L’étude scientifique L'étude était destinée à dresser un inventaire aussi complet que possible de toutes les taxocé- noses d'organismes liées au bois dépérissant ou mort, mais aussi aux forêts semi-naturelles. Grâce à la coopération efficace de 24 experts, dont plus que la moitié sont des collaborateurs bénévoles du Centre de recherche scientifique du Musée, une liste étonnante de groupes floristiques et faunistiques ont pu être étudiés dans ce contexte: Champignons de toutes sortes, mousses, fougères, plantes supérieures, mollusques, vers de terre, tardigrades, plusieurs groupes d'arachnides, cloportes, mille pattes, 14 groupes d'insectes, batraciens, reptiles, oiseaux et mammifères. En ce qui concerne les groupes zoologiques, la grande diversité des taxons choisis à rendu néces- saire l'emploi de plusieurs méthodologies. Ainsi, il était possible de documenter de façon détaillée la majorité des niches écologiques présentes. L'échantillonnage des invertébrés par piégeage et extraction a été effectué en partie par le personnel technique de la section Zoologie du MnhnL. Les experts d'autres groupes ont eux aussi prospecté le terrain en détail et collectionné une multitude d'informations, actuellement plus de 20.000 obser- vations unitaires. Within Ariantinae, C. obtusus stands out because of its aberrant cylindrical shell shape. Here, we present phylogenetic trees based on these five marker sequences and discuss the position of C. obtusus and phylogeographical scenarios in comparison with previously published results. Our results provide strong support for the sister-group relationship between Cylindrus and Arianta confirming previous studies and imply that the split between the two genera is quite old. The tree reveals a phylogeographical pattern of Ariantinae with a well-supported clade comprising the Balkan taxa which is the sister group to a clade with individuals from Alpine localities.

These include the uplands of the Clees, Stiperstones and Long Mynd with their associated heath land, forested land such as the Forest of Wyre and the Mortimer Forest, the lowland bogs and meres in the north of the county, and agricultural land scattered with small woodlands and copses. This diversity makes Shropshire unique. The Shropshire Fungus Group has been in existence for 18 years. (Inaugural meeting 6th December 1992. The aim was to produce a fungus flora for the county. This aim has not yet been realised for a number of reasons, chief amongst these are manpower and cost. The group has however collected many records by trawling the archives, contributions from interested individuals/groups, and by field meetings. It is these records that are published here. The first Shropshire checklist was published in 1997. Many more records have now been added and nearly 40,000 of these have now been added to the national British Mycological Society’s database, the Fungus Record Database for Britain and Ireland (FRDBI). During this ten year period molecular biology, i.e. DNA analysis has been applied to fungal classification.

[email protected]. 1 INTRODUCTION Psocoptera (psocids, booklice or barklice) are a paraphyletic assemblage of non-parasitic members of the order Psocodea (Lyal, 1985; Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2003, 2005; Johnson et al., 2004), containing about 5500 described species (Lienhard, 2003). They are about 1 to 10 mm in length and characterized by well-developed postclypeus, long antennae, pick-like lacinia, reduced prothorax, well-developed pterothorax, etc. Phylogenetically, Psocoptera compose a monophyletic group (the order Psocodea) with parasitic lice ('Phtiraptera': biting lice and sucking lice) (Lyal, 1985; Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2003, in press; Johnson et al., 2004). The order is related to Thysanoptera (thrips) and Hemiptera (bugs, cicadas, etc.) (Yoshizawa & Saigusa, 2001, 2003, but see also Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2005).

    272 HAMPSHIRE FIELD CLUB INSECTS IN HAMPSHIRE, 1933 By F. H. HAINES HE summer of 1933, remarkable for drought and the amount of long-continued sunshine and heat, reacted on insects, T especially Lepidoptera, on the whole favourably. Times of appearance were very early, migrants numerous, and species normally single or double-brooded often produced an extra brood. But many, such as dragonflies, were soon over. February was wet, April dry, but June had one very heavy storm here (1.59ms. in 24 hours). The absence of rain was particularly noticeable later in-the year : in August, November and December. Orthoptera (Earwigs, Cockroaches, Crickets and Grass­ hoppers). The species of Ectobia were abundant and early, as was Nemobius sylvestris F., and grasshoppers : Pholidoptera griseoaptera De G. in the New Forest in August, Metrioptera albopunctata Gz. near Ringwood, M. brachyptera L., Conocephalus dorsalis 'Latr., Meconema thalassinum De G. and Leptophyes punctatissima Bosc. in the Forest. Tetrix subulatus L. was common, and hibernated T. bipunctatus L. was met with here very early. Goytphocerus maculatus Thunb. was everywhere in the wild, dry places around through summer and autumn, its colour, as usual, varying endlessly with that of its surroundings. The large Mecostethus grossus L., not uncommon in the forest bogs, and usually on Linwood Bog, was strangely, conditions being so favourable, not found here this year. Omocestus rufipes Zett. was not nearly so common on the heath as was O. viridulus L. on the grass. It was still abundant, basking in the sun on the woodwork of the house here, and else­ where, late in October.
