A TRIBUTE TO LIFE MEMBERS OF THE WINTON SHOW

John Paine

Life Member – John Paine

Originally from Hughenden, John Paine came to live at Daintree, Winton with his wife Katrina in 1996. He became a member of the Winton Show Society and soon after took on the job of steward for the Stockman’s Challenge event that Darryn Mitchell had initiated. The Outback Legends Challenge event grew over the years to be consistently supported by competitors from across the region, including students from the Longreach Pastoral College.

John took on the role of Chief Ring Steward and later became one of the vice-presidents when there were two of those positions to be filled on the committee. He was President of the Show Committee from 2002-2005, and again from 2013-2018.

For John, some memorable events include the introduction of the Led Steer classes and associated Winton Cattle Club, initiated by Craig & Judy Sanders in 2005. This created great interest and involved many people, especially children, and has added a valued dimension to Winton Show. The TopX Steer Trial held in 2016-2017 was a competition that created a lot of interest and was well supported by local producers and a range of sponsors.

John was awarded Life Membership of the Winton P&A Society in 2019. From a committee perspective, John has been very appreciative of the supportive executive members over the years. Often operating with limited resources, the Show Committee has volunteered their time to continue the Winton Show tradition. Professional entertainment such as the Rooftop Express, the Reptile Kingdom and Sideshow Alley, have been a part of the Show in recent years. It has been very rewarding for John to be a part of continuing an event that the first Winton Show committee started in 1954.

Winton Show Schedule 2021 6 A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

President’s Report

We are beyond excited to be bringing our Winton Show back in 2021. After a troubling 2020, we have been working extremely hard behind the scenes to have our wonderful event up and running. During this time where things were uncertain, we have achieved a huge amount of work to improve and make our show successful in the future. We ran a very successful “Online Winton Show 2020”, we had hundreds of entries in multiple classes. We cannot thank our wonderful Winton Community for supporting our efforts to bring our show to life in trying times. As a committee we have also been able to achieve the following goals: • Updating our Winton Show Logo • Creating a new and improved Website • Complete and build new Cattle Pens All of this could not have been possible without the support of our committee. These goals, could not have happened without teamwork, patience and trust that we could complete all of these ideas. For the 2021 Winton Show, I would like everyone to enjoy all of our work to bring our Show back to our Community Bigger and Better than ever. We look forward to seeing our Valued Sponsors, Competitors and Patrons enjoying and participating at your Winton Show 2021. After all, our show is “For our Community, By our Community”
