THE WINTON HERALD www.winton.qld.gov.au/winton-herald 3 The Winton Herald Community News WINTON ELECTION 2020
I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE MY INTENTION TO STAND AGAIN AS MAYOR OF WINTON SHIRE COUNCIL. Most of you know me but for those who don’t my name is Gavin Baskett. I moved to Winton from Toowoomba 33 years ago, met my wife Joanne, raised 2 kids (Mitch & Syd) and went on to own the newsagency for almost 22 years. My time as mayor, since the bi-election in November 2017, has been both rewarding and challenging. While being elected as a councillor in 2016 was a great honour, stepping up to the mayor’s role was an enormous challenge which I’ve grasped with both hands. Over the last couple of years one of my priorities, as mayor, has been getting to know the issues of the people in our community. I’ve spent this time listening, learning and understanding and am now in a position to provide stability. Winton has a reputation of a town that punches above its weight, this is because of our community spirit and get up and have a go attitude. To maintain this momentum we need positive people in positions of leadership that will work tirelessly to make Winton a prosperous community. The Winton Shire Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan 2018-2023 has been developed with the aim to promote growth and create jobs in Winton. A top priority will also be to assist our residents achieve the construction of an Aged Care Facility- Jessamine Place – to enable our ageing community to remain in Winton surrounded by family and friends. We also need to invest in our next generation for they will be the robust adults that will drive our region for the next 30 years. The liveability in a rural community is paramount to attracting new residents to our region. Council is striving hard to achieve this with upgrades and additions to facilities in and around the shire of Winton, some of which include: •The waterpark at the swimming pool; •Dancing classes; •Upgrades at the Showgrounds; •Ablution block at the Corfield Race Track; •Upgrades at the Drag Club including canteen and bar area; •Ongoing funding of the Opalton Bush Park. Funding and support for our local groups is the life blood of community spirit and will continue into the future. Winton Shire Council has been successful in obtaining funding during the current term. This funding contributes to maintaining our workforce and engagement of local contractors. As a council we are committed to continue sourcing funding to achieve our full potential for growth and success in our region. AS mayor I’ve considered myself very approachable, accessible, and a good listener. There are a lot of great ideas out there and we, as a responsible council, need to listen to them. If there is an issue that you believe is important to our community and would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to give me a call or send an email. What I can promise you is passion, honesty, fairness, transparency and a will to do what’s best for our great community.
I WOULD LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER ME WHEN CASTING YOUR VOTE
