The long-term drought in western Queensland coupled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic across Australia and the world has made it a particularly difficult year. However, through the dedicated support of our visitors, volunteers and supporters, the Museum team have consistently demonstrated an extraordinary level of resilience and flexibility. I would like to thank the AAODL Board and Museum Management Team for their commitment and leadership during the worst of the pandemic and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Federal Government and the Queensland Government in keeping businesses viable during this time. Although the pandemic has presented its challenges, it has also been a time to complete projects and develop new ways to stay connected with our visitors and the world. One of the most important projects completed in 2020 was the relocation of the Snake Creek tracksite. It forms part of the Central West Local Government Association, and the Remote Area Planning and Development Board (RAPAD). The primary focus of the Winton Shire Council is to encourage growth and provide service to the Winton Shire. Winton Shire Council is the local government responsible for administering the Winton Shire Council operations and encompass a broad range of municipal, community, cultural and visitor services. The Winton Shire Council employs approximately 111 staff in a variety of full-time, part-time and casual roles across a broad range of disciplines and skill levels. There are approximately 11 indigenous staff members included in the Shire Council workforce. Winton Shire Council represents local government within the Shire. Four towns make up the Shire of Winton including Middleton, Opalton and Corfield. The Winton Shire is located in Central Western Queensland and covers an area of 53955 square kilometres with a population of 1388. There are two central office locations, the Winton Shire Council Chambers in Vindex Street, and the Winton Neighbourhood Centre along with the Winton Library and the Waltzing Matilda Centre can be found on Elderslie Street. Our RAP The Winton Shire Council is developing RAP to promote harmony and equality in the local community. The Winton Shire has not previously had a Reconciliation Action Plan, and this plan marks the commencement of a journey to improve relations between the local indigenous community and the broader community and to promote inclusion and participation by the local indigenous community in the opportunities that Winton has to offer.

He became a member of the Winton Show Society and soon after took on the job of steward for the Stockman’s Challenge event that Darryn Mitchell had initiated. The Outback Legends Challenge event grew over the years to be consistently supported by competitors from across the region, including students from the Longreach Pastoral College. John took on the role of Chief Ring Steward and later became one of the vice-presidents when there were two of those positions to be filled on the committee. He was President of the Show Committee from 2002-2005, and again from 2013-2018. For John, some memorable events include the introduction of the Led Steer classes and associated Winton Cattle Club, initiated by Craig & Judy Sanders in 2005. This created great interest and involved many people, especially children, and has added a valued dimension to Winton Show. The TopX Steer Trial held in 2016-2017 was a competition that created a lot of interest and was well supported by local producers and a range of sponsors. John was awarded Life Membership of the Winton P&A Society in 2019.
