Svetlana Slapšak, red. prof. dr. Peter Vodopivec in red. prof. dr. Janez Cvirn. Najprej se želim zahvaliti svojemu mentorju dr. Petru Vodopivcu za potrpežljivo usmerjanje pri delu. Zahvaljujem se profesorjem programa magistrskega študija Zgodovinske antropologije na ISH, red. prof. dr. Juretu Mikužu, izr. prof. dr. Mojci Ramšak, izr. prof. dr. Radu Rihi, red. prof. dr. Svetlani Slapšak in red. prof. dr. Marti Verginelli, ker so mi odprli povsem nov pogled na preteklost in na možnosti nje- nega raziskovanja. Rolanda Fugger Germadnik Celje, v decembru 2013 5 6 NA KRATKO O GROFIH CELJSKIH (oK. 1130–1456) Svobodni gospodje Žovneški (1130–1341) Predniki grofov Celjskih so bili svobodni gospodje Žovneški, ki so imeli prepozna- ven grb: tri rdeča bruna na srebrnem grbovnem polju. Na Žovneku pri Braslovčah so si okrog leta 1130 postavili družinski grad.1 Njihova alodialna posest v porečju Savinje, ki je bila v 12. stoletju v upravnem pogledu ponovno vključena v Staro Kranjsko, je bila majhna, obsegala je gradova Žovnek in Ojstrica ter stolpasta gradiča Šenek in Libenštajn. V množici nesvobodnega nižjega plemstva so bili Žovneški ena redkih svobodnih plemiških družin. Čeprav jim njihov položaj ni omogočal poseganja v politiko takratnih vodilnih visokih plemiških družin (Andeških, Spanheimov, Babenberžanov, Traungaucev in ostalih), ki so se borile za prevlado v današnjem slovenskem prostoru, so Žovneški uživali velik ugled. Večina takratnega višjega plemstva na ozemlju današnje Slovenije je izvirala iz nemško govorečega prostora: Bavarske, Avstrije, Zgornje Koroške in Saške. Porekla Žovneških do sedaj ni bilo mogoče odkriti. Njihov neznani izvor je šte- vilnim zgodovinarjem v preteklosti vzbujal domnevo, da so Žovneški potomci domačega slovanskega plemstva, ki se mu je kljub izgubi politične samostojnosti uspelo prebiti med konkurenčno tujo elito. Danes v slovenskem zgodovinopisju prevladuje teza, da so Žovneški potomci Askvina, sorodnika Heme, ki je bila žena Viljema II., mejnega grofa v Savinjski krajini. V prvi tretjini 11. stoletja je bilo vse današnje slovensko ozemlje v njuni lasti, leta 1036 pa so Viljema umorili in rod je po moški liniji izumrl. Vdova Hema je s posestmi bogato obdarila Cerkev, z obsežnim preostankom pa so se okoristili sorodniki.2 Nekateri od njenih pred- nikov so bili pripadniki visokega slovanskega plemstva, to dejstvo pa so nekateri slovenski zgodovinarji, ki so zasnovali mit o grofih Celjskih, uspešno izrabili (o tem v nadaljevanju). V današnjem slovenskem prostoru sta bila 12. in 13. stoletje čas nemirov in po- litičnih preobratov. Žovneškim je uspevalo, da so ohranili alodialno posest in s tem neodvisnost, vendar je bila v sedemdesetih letih 13. stoletja družina nevarno blizu izumrtja. Vsi upi so prešli na Ulrika II., sina Ulrika I., ki je ob materi Ani Sternberški skupaj s sestro Ano odraščal na Lembergu. Poročil se je z Vovbržanko in je kot daljnoviden politik v obdobju hudih bojev med Habsburžani in Gori- ško-Tirolskimi v začetku 14. stoletja stopil na habsburško stran. Njegova presoja položaja se je izkazala za politično modro, saj so bili Goriški leta 1311 prisiljeni prepustiti Habsburžanom celotno Posavinje, ki je s tem dokončno prešlo v sklop dežele Štajerske. Ulrik je leta 1308 izročil žovneško alodialno posest Frideriku Lepemu Habsburškemu, jo prevzel nazaj v fevd in stopil v vazalni odnos s Habs- buržani. Zveza Žovneških oziroma kasneje Celjskih s Habsburžani se je izkazala za vsestransko koristno v času, ko so se šele vzpenjali po družbeno hierarhični lestvici. Hermanu II.

    Janez Mlinar / Medieval Biography Between the individual and the ColleCtive Janez Mlinar Medieval Biography between the Individual and the Collective In a brief overview of medieval historiography penned by Herbert Grundmann his- torical writings seeking to present individuals are divided into two literary genres. Us- ing a broad semantic term, Grundmann named the first group of texts vita, indicating only with an addition in the title that he had two types of texts in mind. Although he did not draw a clear line between the two, Grundmann placed legends intended for li- turgical use side by side with “profane” biographies (Grundmann, 1987, 29). A similar distinction can be observed with Vollmann, who distinguished between hagiographi- cal and non-hagiographical vitae (Vollmann, 19992, 1751–1752). Grundmann’s and Vollman’s loose divisions point to terminological fluidity, which stems from the medi- eval denomination of biographical texts. Vita, passio, legenda, historiae, translationes, miracula are merely a few terms signifying texts that are similar in terms of content. Historiography and literary history have sought to classify this vast body of texts ac- cording to type and systematize it, although this can be achieved merely to a certain extent. They thus draw upon literary-historical categories or designations that did not become fixed in modern languages until the 18th century (Berschin, 1986, 21–22).1 In terms of content, medieval biographical texts are very diverse. When narrat- ing a story, their authors use different elements of style and literary approaches. It is often impossible to draw a clear and distinct line between different literary genres.

Što li je to što nas tako snažno privlači priči o dinastiji čija je prisutnost na pozornici velikih trajala jedva nešto više od stoljeća? Možda upravo činjenica da se u tom relativno kratkom vremenskom periodu njihov utjecaj na društvena i politička zbivanja osjećao ne samo u njihovoj neposrednoj okolini – na području današnje Slovenije i Hrvatske gdje se nalazila velika većina njihovih posjeda – već i u znatno širem regionalnom prostoru koji je sezao od jugoistočnih predjela Svetog Rimskog carstva, preko ugarsko-hrvatskog kraljevstva sve do srednjojekovne Srbije i Bosne. Zaista, za Celjske grofove, norveškog kralja-pustolova Haralda Hadradu ili francuskog viteza Engerarda de Coucya, moglo bi se prije reći da njihova povijest pripada domeni fikcije i pustolovnih romana nego stvarnim povijesnim događajima. In this paper, we will consider heraldry in the People’s/Socialist Republic of Macedonia, understood by the multitude of coats of arms, and armorial knowledge and art. Due to historical, as well as geographical factors, there is only a small number of coats of arms and a developing knowledge of art, which make this paper’s aim feasible. This paper covers the earliest preserved heraldic motifs and coats of arms found in Macedonia, as well as the attributed arms in European culture and armorials of Macedonia, the кing of Macedonia, and Alexander the Great of Macedonia. It also covers the land arms of Macedonia from the so-called Illyrian Heraldry, as well as the state and municipal heraldry of P/SR Macedonia.     Introduction mong the phenomena of late mediaeval society towns as highly Aorganized settlement agglomerations held a very special position. Their appearance determined, to a greater extent than churches or castles, the level of culture or civilization reached by a certain province in its development, and, at the same time, they reflected the social controversies of their age. In the face of this it is only natural that experts from various fields take part in the study of towns, i.e. geographers and town planners, art historians and so­ ciologists, each of them from his (or her) specific point of view. All of these professions have, each in its field, rendered far-reach­ ing discoveries, yet their observations have, to a large extent, re­ mained partial. A balanced structural analysis, which would, through the consideration of all historical data, facilitate a more complex evaluation of town textures and the basic characteristics of the ir development, is therefore stili one of the most provocative challenges, particularly for those who do not only analyse historic towns, but also determine their future development. The establishment and development of large towns that sooner or later grew into regional or even state capitals was always deter­ mined by large rivers. This held true of ancient Egypt and Meso­ potamia as well as of large European towns. Aachen as the capital of Charlemagne was located by the Rhine, and four of the present­ day state capitals developed along the Danube: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade, besides the ancient imperial independent town of Regensburg. On Slovene land there were no rivers that could measure up to the Danube and other great European rivers, therefore other factors played a more decisive role in the establishment of towns, although they similarly came into existence in the valleys and always adja­ cent to rivers.
