PANORAMA Contractors World September 2009 Crush On The Pacific Highway The Pacific Highway Upgrade Program is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of NSW. The Karuah to Bulahdelah Stages 2 & 3 requires the construction of 23 km of dual carriageway which, when completed, will provide benefits to users by improving safety and travel times and reducing freight transport costs. This project was awarded to Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd as Principal Contractor. NSW Crushing and Screening Pty Ltd was a successful tenderer for the crushing works associated with this project. According to Managing Director Peter Male, “The company used its range of nine Sandvik Extec track mounted machines. There are three primary crushers – two Extec C12 with track mounted mobile jaw crushers and a Megabite jaw crusher; three secondary crushers – two impactors (Extec IC13) and a 2002 Extec impactor; and three screens – two Extec E7scalpers and an Extec S5 double screen. “We have achieved a daily production of up to 6000 tonnes of verge material and the overall consistency in production has contributed to the ontime achievement of the other specifications for this important infrastructure project." UK - JCB Specials Working With Props UK contractor, Holystone Ltd, has two purposebuilt JCB tracked excavators with unique boom and dipper configurations, to carry out specialist groundworks on the new Tyne Tunnel Project in NewcastleuponTyne. The contractor has been awarded the earthmoving contract by the project’s main construction firm, Bouygues UK. In order to carry out the complex work, it purchased a 46 tonne JCB JS460 tracked excavator with a Kocurek telescopic dipper and 1.5 m³ clamshell bucket and a 24tonne JCB JZ235 zero tailswing model with a shortened Kocurek boom and dipper. The two machines' unusual configurations were specified by Holystone and developed in conjunction with JCB dealer and Kocurek. The material the JZ235 excavates is collected by the JS460, at ground level. This larger machine uses its telescopic dipper to reach vertically down to depths of up to 20 m and gathers the excavated material in its clam shell bucket which it empties into dump trucks. Working in tandem, the two JCB’s are managing to remove an impressive 600 m³ of earth per day. The two machines are working on the north approach section of the project which is being constructed using cutandcover technique. The machines had to work underneath the special Groundforce Shorco props developed especially for the project the first ever MP500 hybrid strut. Groundforce Technical has provided a solution to enable high strut loadings ranging from 140 tonne to 620 tonne After casting two parallel continuous concrete diaphragm walls, the area between will be excavated by the JZ235, with temporary struts being used to support the walls. The short boom and dipper on the JZ235 create a reduced machine height of 4.7 m which means it can safely work beneath the 5 m high horizontal support struts. JCB Sales

Groundforce Shorco - Only Option For Demolition A German company considered several options for a challenging demolition project before selecting the Grove GTK1100 from Manitowoc as the only viable choice. Rental company and lifting specialist Scholl looked at mobile and crawler crane options to dismantle a 45 t chimney top from a 100 m tall chimney in the city of Ludwigshafen, before choosing the GTK1100. With an outrigger base of just 18 m x 18 m and only a few trailers to transport the crane to site, the GTK was a natural choice for the Ludwigshafen job. A further benefit was that the GTK requires far less ground preparation and offers less ground pressure than alternatives. Manitowoc Grove Page 7 Contractors World September 2009

QATAR Finishing Touches To Massive Ras Laffan Port Expansion structions are in accordance with design specifications. This work calls for precision working in order not to disturb mater ial already in place both from a var iety of landbased equipment and from the sea, where an O&K RH90C mounted onboard the Abeko Server 1 is helping with final underwater profiling of the breakwaters. As the first phase nears comple tion, the massive volume of material deployed is evident by the several kilometres of structures standing several meters above the water line. Over 10.6 million t. of local rock ,together with a further 4.2 million tons imported from the UAE, has been put in place, either by side dump barges or by dump trucks. Over 1 million m³ of concrete was used by the prefabrication yards for production of 185,000 precast con crete antifers and 36,000 concrete acropods, which were for the armour layer construction of the break waters. The antifers range in size from 1.5 m³, 3.0 m³ and 3.5 m³. The acropods are from 3.0 m³ to 5.0 m³. The rock and precast concrete elements were used to profile and protect the land reclaimed from the placing of more than 20 million m³ of dredged limestone and 25 million m³ of offshore sand. There is also more than 900,000 m² of geotextiles incorporated into the structures and the causeways and breakwaters are finished off with 3.4 m high crown walls and 50 m wide x 2.15 m deep reinforced road slabs (typical) for which more than 170,000 m³ of concrete was poured. he civil engineering stage of the struction of the 22.5 kilometres of Throughout the project, the con first phase of the major expan causeways and breakwaters. The challenges for the contract ors were many and included the scale of the project, the time re straints, logistics, the many vari ations, very demanding quality control for materials and the con struction tolerances (as little as ±0.2 m). To achieve this, they had to de ploy the very latest technology, ad vanced computer aided systems, sophisticated, heavyduty machines configured specially for the works and a team of highly skilled operators.

London 2012 Olympic Games Update Bridge Launch over Live Tracks

In an unprecedented feat of engineering, the 1,600 tonne, 128m long and 14m wide bridge touched down in Stratford, London. The bridge was constructed on site in three sections which were then progressively pushed out on three separate occasions. The Bridge was successfully pushed over 11 live railway lines. It is one step closer to serving millions of spectators during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will provide a vital link from the existing town centre to Westfield’s £1.45 bn Stratford City Project. Patrick Hallgate, Network Rail Anglia route director, said: “This project took a great deal of planning and collaboration with our partners to ensure all the necessary measures were in place. We’ve been able to deliver this final piece of key infrastructure without any disruption to train services through Stratford station.”

Big Build of Handball Arena starts early During the Games the distinctive copperclad Handball Arena will host qualifying games for the Handball competition as well as Modern Pentathlon Fencing and Goalball during the Paralympic Games. Over the coming months around 200 piles will be driven 25 metres into the ground to form the foundations for the venue on track to start coming out of the ground in the Autumn and be completed by summer 2011 ready for test events. Page 23 UNITED KINGDOM Report and photography by Tough Marine Salvage Job Roger Lindley, Editor K based demolition contractor, PGC Demolition, recently completed its largest ever demolition project – cutting up and removal of ‘The Riverdance' a 6,000 t. rollon/rolloff ferry which was beached during sUevere storms on the Lancashire coast, near to Blackpool. Key to the successful demolition were five Haulotte HA 16 PX access platforms, which were used by operators using oxyacetylene cutting equipment to provide access to the 16 m high ship lying on its side. The ship was embedded some 3 m into the sand. For the contractor, this was a very demanding project with many unusual aspects. The ship lay 300 m from the shore and could only be accessed at low tide. This meant all the equipment had to be driven out and back once or twice each day according to the tide timetable. Therefore, reliability was a critical consideration in equipment selection. Peter Cordwell, Managing Director of PGC Demolition said “The tide came in very quickly, but we needed to spend as much time working as possible, so speed of travel and reliability were critical. We could not risk machines being trapped. There was also a steep ramp providing access to the beach, so all machines had to have good gradeability. The Haulotte platforms met these criteria and proved their reliability. They did everything we expected without any problems. This was a harsh environment and tough on men and machine. “ Platform capacity was another critical consideration. Apart from the operator, each platform needed to carry sufficient oxygen and acetylene cylinders to allow for continuous working in the Page 24 Contractors World September 2009

“In specifying access platforms, we looked for versatility. We wanted to minimise travel of the platforms as much as possible,” explained Peter Cordwell. “The Haulotte machines, with their articulating booms and telescopic extension allowed the operator to reach a large area without having to travel. And, although working on sand, they also proved extremely stable, every requirement of PGC even when used to their Demolition. maximum height.” Working under the watchful As the demolition works eye of the Coast Guards, who progressed, the articulating constantly monitored activities to boom allowed each platform ensure that there was no pollution to reach into the ship to of the beach, PGC were pleased facilitate internal working. with progress. “By the time we had available window.
