Since that time, I have worked extensively as a PR ©VVV Ltd 2009 All Rights Reserved Consultant specialising in the construction, mining, quarrying and related industries. The current economic recession has made it extremely difficult for CONTRACTORS WORLD manufacturers and suppliers to support the more traditional form of CML House 7 Bell Mead publications. The Karuah to Bulahdelah Stages 2 & 3 requires the construction of 23 km of dual carriageway which, when completed, will provide benefits to users by improving safety and travel times and reducing freight transport costs. This project was awarded to Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd as Principal Contractor. NSW Crushing and Screening Pty Ltd was a successful tenderer for the crushing works associated with this project. According to Managing Director Peter Male, “The company used its range of nine Sandvik Extec track mounted machines. There are three primary crushers – two Extec C12 with track mounted mobile jaw crushers and a Megabite jaw crusher; three secondary crushers – two impactors (Extec IC13) and a 2002 Extec impactor; and three screens – two Extec E7scalpers and an Extec S5 double screen. “We have achieved a daily production of up to 6000 tonnes of verge material and the overall consistency in production has contributed to the ontime achievement of the other specifications for this important infrastructure project." Loading is with Komatsu and Hyundai tracked excavators from stock pile created by Komatsu dozers. Sandvik Extec Crushers UK - JCB Specials Working With Props UK contractor, Holystone Ltd, has two purposebuilt JCB tracked excavators with unique boom and dipper configurations, to carry out specialist groundworks on the new Tyne Tunnel Project in NewcastleuponTyne. The contractor has been awarded the earthmoving contract by the project’s main construction firm, Bouygues UK. In order to carry out the complex work, it purchased a 46 tonne JCB JS460 tracked excavator with a Kocurek telescopic dipper and 1.5 m³ clamshell bucket and a 24tonne JCB JZ235 zero tailswing model with a shortened Kocurek boom and dipper. The two machines' unusual configurations were specified by Holystone and developed in conjunction with JCB dealer and Kocurek. The material the JZ235 excavates is collected by the JS460, at ground level. This larger machine uses its telescopic dipper to reach vertically down to depths of up to 20 m and gathers the excavated material in its clam shell bucket which it empties into dump trucks. Working in tandem, the two JCB’s are managing to remove an impressive 600 m³ of earth per day. The two machines are working on the north approach section of the project which is being constructed using cutandcover technique. The machines had to work underneath the special Groundforce Shorco props developed especially for the project the first ever MP500 hybrid strut. Groundforce Technical has provided a solution to enable high strut loadings ranging from 140 tonne to 620 tonne After casting two parallel continuous concrete diaphragm walls, the area between will be excavated by the JZ235, with temporary struts being used to support the walls. The short boom and dipper on the JZ235 create a reduced machine height of 4.7 m which means it can safely work beneath the 5 m high horizontal support struts. JCB Sales Groundforce Shorco GERMANY - Only Option For Demolition A German company considered several options for a challenging demolition project before selecting the Grove GTK1100 from Manitowoc as the only viable choice. Rental company and lifting specialist Scholl looked at mobile and crawler crane options to dismantle a 45 t chimney top from a 100 m tall chimney in the city of Ludwigshafen, before choosing the GTK1100. With an outrigger base of just 18 m x 18 m and only a few trailers to transport the crane to site, the GTK was a natural choice for the Ludwigshafen job. A further benefit was that the GTK requires far less ground preparation and offers less ground pressure than alternatives. Manitowoc Grove Page 7 Contractors World September 2009 QATAR Finishing Touches To Massive Ras Laffan Port Expansion structions are in accordance with design specifications. This work calls for precision working in order not to disturb mater ial already in place both from a var iety of landbased equipment and from the sea, where an O&K RH90C mounted onboard the Abeko Server 1 is helping with final underwater profiling of the breakwaters. As the first phase nears comple tion, the massive volume of material deployed is evident by the several kilometres of structures standing several meters above the water line. Over 10.6 million t. of local rock ,together with a further 4.2 million tons imported from the UAE, has been put in place, either by side dump barges or by dump trucks. Over 1 million m³ of concrete was used by the prefabrication yards for production of 185,000 precast con crete antifers and 36,000 concrete acropods, which were for the armour layer construction of the break waters. The antifers range in size from 1.5 m³, 3.0 m³ and 3.5 m³. The acropods are from 3.0 m³ to 5.0 m³. The rock and precast concrete elements were used to profile and protect the land reclaimed from the placing of more than 20 million m³ of dredged limestone and 25 million m³ of offshore sand.
