www.nottinghamacademy.org @NottinghamAcad ACADEMY DAY

As part of our commitment to improving learning and progress at Nottingham Academy we are continually reviewing our provision. We have recently reviewed the structure of the Academy day, consulted with colleagues across Greenwood Academies Trust and reviewed curriculum provision in other high performing schools. Following this review and consideration by the Academy Leadership Team the Academy day will change from September 2018.

A summary of the change is detailed below.

08:30am – 08:40am Registration/Form

08:40am – 09:40 am Period 1

09:40 am – 10:40 am Period 2

10:40 am – 11:00 am Break

11:00am – 12:00pm Period 3

12:00pm – 1:00pm Period 4

1.00pm – 1.40pm Lunch

1:40pm – 2:40pm Period 5

2:40pm – 2:50pm R10*

3:00pm – 5:00pm Staff CPD on Mondays

* R10 is a sanction where pupils are detained at the end of the Academy day to allow a restorative conversation to take place, following an incidence of poor behaviour. This will not impact the significant majority of pupils who meet Academy standards impeccably.

• The Academy day will start earlier at 8.30am and end earlier at 2.40pm. • The Academy will move from a 6 period day (6 periods of 50 minutes) to a 5 period day (5 periods of 60 minutes). The total time in lessons will remain the same. • An additional period of training/continuing professional development will be in place for all staff on a Monday. • We expect a significant increase in enrichment and intervention activities between 2.40pm and 4.00pm from Tuesday to Friday.

The anticipated impact of the changes are; • Fewer lessons in the day will reduce movement time resulting in less learning loss. The reduction in the number of lessons may also allow pupils to retain information more effectively. • Longer lessons will allow the greater development of skills and knowledge whilst increasing depth of learning. • Pupils will be able to access a wider range of enrichment activities such as targeted intervention, revision, mentoring and extended opportunities in the arts, sports, outdoor education and much more. A full list of extra curricular activities is included in this pack. • The early finish time will help ease congestion around the Greenwood Campus at the end of the Academy day. PASTORAL SUPPORT

We aim to support pupils academically, personally and emotionally. Our pastoral system is structured in such a way to enable us to offer targeted support effectively and in a timely manner. The Year 7 Team at Nottingham Academy Is made up of: • Assistant Principal • Head of Year • Deputy Head of Year • Director Of Achievement • Learning Mentors We also work with pupils and outside agencies to offer support with self-esteem, confidence and can also provide some counselling and one-to-one work. SEND Support

Nicky Rees Special Educational Need Coordinator Here at Nottingham Academy, we promote an inclusive educational environment in which we support and encourage all pupils to achieve their potential. Quality teaching is vital; however for some pupils, there are occasions when additional support may be required to help them achieve their targets. In order to do this, steps may be taken to support young people through their learning journey. We work closely with our feeder primary schools to ensure we have a thorough understanding of the individual needs of each of our pupils on entry. The transition from primary to secondary education can be a difficult time; therefore we develop plans to ensure our pupils are well prepared for this move. For some pupils we offer a bespoke programme to help them have a smooth transition. Once at the Academy, we provide a range of strategies including: • support through the classroom or through withdrawal • pastoral care through both the year team and our SEND department • a curriculum catering for each child’s needs • tailored reading and literacy intervention Please see our website for full details of the SEND provision at Nottingham Academy.
