Viking Pages Sunnyslope High School Community Newsletter Fall 2010

Sunnyslope High Dear Parents, Guardians and Community members, School Administration Sunnyslope High School and our surrounding community are the happy recipients of a new traffic light and crosswalk on Dunlap Avenue in front of Linda Whitehead the school. If you know anyone who is connected with the City of Phoenix Principal Street and Transportation Department, be sure to thank him or her for the Eric Zimmerman extra safety now available. Assistant Principal Operations & The new light is called a “HAWK” beacon (High Intensity Activated Resources CrossWalK) and will help ensure that students and community members are able to cross Dunlap with a greater degree of safety and is the newest of seven Brooke Obad “HAWK” lights in our city. The light consists of a RED-YELLOW-RED Assistant Principal signal format for motorists and voice directions indicating when pedestrians Student Services should enter the crosswalk.

Steve Ducey On September 16, we celebrated the dedication of the new system. Student Assistant Principal Council members walked across the crosswalk first followed by the Viking Discipline & Band playing our fight song. After the AFJROTC cadets presented the colors, Attendance GUHSD Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Johnson, GUHSD Board President Glendale Union Kevin Clayborn, District 3 Councilman Bill Gates and I thanked the City, High School the Phoenix Street Transportation Department and all those responsible for District making this a reality.

Governing Board We have also made changes to the bus loading area in our west parking lot. We apologize if the change is causing you delays, but we had been looking Kevin Clayborn for ways to make bus loading and unloading safer on our campus. With DPS President and our district transportation department’s direction, we made the changes necessary to meet safety and legal requirements. Donna Stout Clerk Also concerning the west parking lot, we have voiced both parental and Vicki Johnson administration’s concern for a safer signal at the Central Ave entrance/exit; Member we hope to hear soon if an analysis of traffic justifies a “HAWK” at that site. Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of the efforts of her grown-up stepchildren to get their hands on it. These latter, knowing that the widow’s wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, commit her to a “sanatorium” hoping to “bring her to her senses.” But, Mrs. Savage is determined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the sanatorium, she meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her composure and leads them on a merry chase. At last, her friends scheme to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The , a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each “guest” in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.
