Memorial Poems Afterglow Broken Chain I’d like the memory of me We little knew that morning that to be a happy one, God was going to call your name. I’d like to leave an afterglow In life we loved you dearly, of smiles when life is done. in death we do the same. I’d like to leave an echo It broke our hearts to lose you, whispering softly down the ways, you did not go alone; of happy times and laughing times for part of us went with you and bright and sunny days. the day God called you home. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, You left us peaceful memories, to dry before the sun of happy memories your love is still our guide, that I leave behind when day is done. and though we cannot see you, Helen Lowrie Marshall you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, Boundless the chain will link again. They talk about a woman’s sphere As though it had a limit; God Hath Not Promised There’s not a place in earth or Heaven, There’s not a task to mankind given, God hath not promised There’s not a blessing or a woe, Skies always blue, There’s not a whispered yes or no, Flower strewn pathways There’s not a life, or death, or birth, All our lives through; That has a feather’s weight of worth… God hath not promised Without a woman in it. Sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, Peace without pain, If Tears Could Build A Stairwell But God hath promised Strength for the day, If tears could build a stairwell Rest for the labor, and memories were a lane, Light for the way, I would walk right up to Heaven Grace for the trials, and bring you home again. Help from above, No farewell words were spoken, Unfailing sympathy no time to say good-bye... Undying love…….. You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness Another Leaf Has Fallen and secret tears still flow, What it means to lose you Another leaf has fallen, no one will ever know. another soul has gone. But still we have God's promises, in every robin's song. The Soul Departed For he is in His heaven, and though He takes away, The Soul departed He always leaves to mortals, in the Lord does not die, the bright sun's kindly ray. It returns to God, He leaves the fragrant blossoms, Who is the giver of Life. and lovely forest, green. Amen And gives us new found comfort, when we on Him will lean. Footprints in the Sand Memories of Love One night a man had a dream. High on a hill so far away He was walking along the beach with the Lord Where all the beauty lies, and across the sky flashed scenes from his life. I see your smiling face so near In each scene, he noticed It almost makes me cry. two sets of footprints in the sand; one made by him and the other by the Lord. I look at the trees so tall and pure And I can see you standing there, When the last scene of his life With arms outstretched, waiting for me, flashed before him, Knowing I won’t be there. he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path The flowers, the trees and the blue sky above of his life there was only one set of footprints. And the memories that we shared He also noticed that it happened Are all I have left now of at the worst times in his life. The wonderful love that we shared. This bothered him very much, I pray to God that someday soon, so he asked the Lord about it. We will meet on our hill in the sky, “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, And walk hand in hand in our wonderland, you’d walk with me all the way. But I’ve noticed And in the lovely green grass we will lie. that during times of trouble, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t Till then my true love, understand why you left me I must be content to wait in our garden of love, when I needed you the most.” To hold you in my arms again, When God takes us both above. The Lord answered, “My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. Twill be a glorious reunion During your times of trial, A day to be reborn again, When you see only one set of footprints, A day when we start our lives over that’s when I was carrying you.” Never to be separated again. Taps Miss Me . But Let Me Go Day is done, gone the sun, When I come to the end of the road, From the hills, from the lake, from the skies. And the sun has set for me, All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free Go to sleep, peaceful sleep, Miss me a little . But not too long, May the soldier or sailor, God keep. And not with your head bowed low, On the land or the deep, safe in sleep. Remember the love that we once shared . Miss me, but let me go! Love, good night, must thou go, For this is a journey we all must take, When the day, And the night need thee so? And each must go alone. All is well. Speedeth all to their rest. It’s all part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home. Fades the light; and afar goeth day, When you are lonely and sick of heart, And the stars shineth bright, fare thee well; Go to the friends we know Day has gone, night is on. And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds Miss me . But let me go. Thanks and praise, for our days, ‘neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, ‘neath the sky, As we -Author Unknown- go, this we know, God is nigh. The Prophet Until we meet again This day has ended. It is closing upon us as God saw you were getting tired the water-lily upon its own tomorrow. What when a cure was not to be, was given us here we shall keep, and if it so He put His arms around you suffices not, then against must we come and whispered, “Come to me.” together and together stretch our hands unto You didn’t deserve what you went the giver. Forget not that I shall come back to through and so He gave you rest. you. A little while, and my longing shall gather God’s garden must be beautiful, dust and foam for another body. A little while, He only takes the best. a moment of rest upon the wind, and another And when we saw you sleeping woman shall bear me. Farewell to you and the so peaceful and free from pain, youth I have spent with you. It was but we knew you were in God’s kingdom. yesterday we met in a dream. When I’m Gone Welcome Home When I come to the end of my journey When I am gone, release me, let me go- And I travel my last weary mile, I have so many things to see and do. Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears. Remember some good I have done. Be happy that we had so many years. Forget that I ever had heartache I gave to you my love, you can only guess And remember I’ve had loads of fun. How much you gave to me in happiness. Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered I thank you for the love you each have shown. And sometimes fell by the way But now it’s time I traveled on alone. Remember I have fought some hard battles So grieve a while for me if grieve you must. And won, ere the close of day Then let your grief be comforted by trust. Then forget to grieve for my going It’s only for a while that we must part I would not have you sad for a day, So bless with memories within your heart. And come in the shade of evening I won’t be far away, for life goes on. When the sun paints the sky in the west, So if you need me, call and I will come, Stand for few moments beside me Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near. And remember only the best. And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone Winding the Clock I’ll greet you with a smile, and “Welcome Home” When I was a little lad, my old grandfather said that none should wind the clock but he, and so at time for bed, he’d fumble for the curious key kept high upon the When I Must Leave You shelf. And set aside that little task entirely for himself. In time grandfather past away and so that duty fell unto When I must leave you for a little while my father who performed the weekly custom well; He please do not grieve and shed wild tears and held that clocks were not to be by careless persons hug your sorrow to you through the years wound and he alone should turn the key or move the but start out bravely with a gallant smile; and hand around.

  • The Welcome Verse for This Week Is Psalm 23:2: “He Makes Me Lie Down in Green Pastures
The welcome verse for this week is Psalm 23:2: “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” Practicing Solitude and Prayer Luke 5:12-16; Mark 6:31; Matthew 14:23 The Bottom Line: All of life is built out from the eremos, solitude with God. Introduction: At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, he is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Why? The wilderness is the place of strength, not weakness. Today, we discuss the importance of solitude and prayer in the life of the believer. All of life is built out from the eremos, solitude with God. Tension: We have become comfortable in one big kingdom of noise. “The reason we live in a culture increasingly without faith is not because science has somehow disproved the unprovable, but because the white noise of secularism has removed the very stillness in which it might endure or be reborn. The greatest threat to faith today is not hedonism, but distraction.” – Andrew Sullivan Many of us would rather be caught up in the noise of life than be alone with God and ourselves. This is just what the enemy intends. Truth: “Let him who cannot be alone beware of community; let him who is not in community beware of being alone.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer Your life among other believers is only helpful when you have built a foundation of solitude with God. Your encouragement, ministry, and witness to other believers should be an overflow of your own time away with God.

Interest in the apocalypse never seems to fade, but what does change is what form that apocalypse is thought to take, and the ever-keen question of what comes after. The most classic Western version of the apocalypse, the millennial Judgement Day based on Revelation – an absolute event encompassing all of humankind – has given way in recent decades to speculation about political dystopias following catastrophic war or ecological disaster, and how the remnants of mankind claw tooth-and-nail for survival in the aftermath. Desolate landscapes populated by cannibals or supernatural creatures produce the awe that sublime imagery, like in the paintings of John Martin, once inspired. The Byronic hero reincarnates in an extreme version as the apocalyptic wanderer trapped in and traversing a ruined world, searching for some solace in the dust.

  • Lyrics – Sailing Ships & Sailing Men
Sailing Ships & Sailing Men Lyrics – Sailing Ships & Sailing Men The Day of the Clipper (Steve Romanoff/Outer Green Music) You can see the squares of canvas dancing over the horizon, You can hear the chanty wailing to the heaving of the men; You can feel the seas up to your knees and you know the sea is rising, And you know the clipper's day has come again, To the men on high, the bosun's cry commands a killing strain, Till every mother's son begins to pray; With a hearty shout, she comes about as she heads into the rain, And the ship has never seen a better day. Chorus: Sailing ships and sailing men will sail the open waters, Where the only thing that matters is the wind inside the main. Come all you loving mothers, keep your eyes upon your daughters, For the sails will mend their tatters and the masts will rise again. Wooden beams and human dreams are all that makes her go, And the magic of the wind upon her sails. She'd rather fight the weather than the fishes down below; God help us if the rigging ever fails. As the timber creaks, the captain speaks above the vessel's groan, 'Til every soul on board can hear the call; It's nothing but the singing of the ship inside her bones, And this is when she like it best of all. (Chorus:) Where the current goes, the clipper's nose is plowing fields of green; Where fortune takes the crews, we wish them well, Where men could be when lost at sea is somewhere in between The regions of a heaven and a hell.

  • An Interview with David Rabe Philip C. Kolin
Spring 1989 135 An Interview with David Rabe Philip C. Kolin Coming from America's heartland (Dubuque, Iowa), David Rabe was drafted in 1965 at the age of 25 and completed a tour of duty in the literal Vietnam that he would later project symbolically on the American stage. Defining that event for himself, Rabe became one of the most promising playwrights of the post-1970 theatre. After his discharge from the Army, Rabe finished an MA. in theatre at Villanova University and worked on the early drafts of what critics have labeled his Vietnam Trilogy— The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Sticks and Bones, and Streamers. He then put in an 18-month stint as a feature writer for the Sunday Pictorial magazine of the New Haven Register, publishing more than two dozen hauntingly beautiful and painful stories on the draft resistance movement, drugs, sports, the arts, and various rituals in American society, topics that also surface in the plays. In 1970 Rabe began an eventful 12-year friendship with Joe Papp who introduced, directed, produced, and defended Rabe's early work. Papp's admiration for Rabe was unqualified: "He is the most important writer we've ever had" (quoted in Mel Gussow, "2nd David Rabe Play to Join, Tavlo Hummel' at Public Theater," New York Times [Nov. 3, 1971]: 43). Pavlo Hummel and Sticks and Bones made theatre history when both plays were performed at the same time at the Public Theater, Pavlo at the Newman and Sticks at the Anspacher. In March of 1972 Papp prevailed upon Rabe to move Sticks to Broadway (Rabe's first appearance there) where Rabe won a Tony.
