Mott the Hoople All the Way from Memphis
All the Way from Memphis Mott the Hoople Forgot my six-string razor - hit the sky Half way to Memphis 'fore I realised Well I rang the information - my axe was cold They said she rides the train to Oreoles Now its a mighty long way down the dusty trail And the sun burns hot on the cold steel rails 'N I look like a bum 'n I crawl like a snail All the way from Memphis Well I got to Oreoles y'know - it took a month And there was my guitar, electric junk. Some spade said "Rock'n'rollers, you're all the same. Man that's your instrument." I felt so ashamed. Now its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll Through the Bradford Cities and the Oreoles 'N you look like a star but you're still on the dole All the way from Memphis Yeah it's a mighty long way down rock'n'roll From the Liverpool docks to the Hollywood Bowl 'N you climb up the mountains 'n you fall down the holes All the way from Memphis Yeah its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll As your name gets hot so your heart grows cold 'N you gotta stay young man, you can never be old All the way from Memphis Yeah its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll Through the Bradford Cities and the Oreoles 'N you look like a star but you're really out on parole! SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL AND PLAYFULLY SERIOUS: THE HELPFULNESS OF HUMOROUS PARODY A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Michael Richard Lucas May 2014 Accepted by: Victor J. Vitanza, Committee Chair Stephaine Barczewski Cynthia Haynes Beth Lauritis i ABSTRACT In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to provide a practical model for how to create/analyze narratives both inside/outside of the classroom. -

The Beginning Of
the beginning of THE WEDDING PLANNER (from ROMANTIC FOOLS) a short comedy by Rich Orloff (ROMANTIC FOOLS, a comic revue for one man and one woman, is published and licensed by Playscripts, Inc. www.playscripts.com) The woman enters and addresses us: WOMAN When a woman and a man become engaged – it’s a magical moment, filled with the promise of love, affection and a life overflowing with joy. Then you realize you have to plan a wedding, and that magical moment is history. For months and months, you and your betrothed have to figure out a thousand details which lead to that special day when you think, “If I can make it through this, marriage will be easy.” After all that work, I think the reason the bride and groom get to march down the aisle first is so that nobody can get between them and the champagne. To help reduce the stress of all that a wedding entails, most people turn to a professional with expertise, someone they can trust, a wedding planner. The WEDDING PLANNER (MAN) enters. MAN Did I hear you say you’re looking for a wedding planner? WOMAN Well – MAN Let me present myself. He hands her a card. WOMAN “Charles H. Hungadunga the Third, Wedding and Funeral Planner. All your needs from Married to Buried.” The Wedding Planner EXCERPT, 2 MAN I’m the only wedding planner who offers a guarantee. WOMAN A guarantee? MAN If the wedding costs more than you rake in on gifts, your second wedding’s free. Now as I see it, you want a simple wedding. -

The intent is to lift up the prayers by viewing them through a new lens, and perhaps gain new insight into beloved, contemporary songs, whether familiar or new to us. “Both Sides Now” speaks to several relevant themes in our service and in our hearts: • This week’s Torah portion, B’Shallah, begins with our Israeilite ancestors in slavery, on one side of the Sea of Reeds and ends with them as a newly freed people on the other side. -
