I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act.     Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

Though their fans are legendarily supportive, Mott really has never gotten the credit they deserve next to their contemporaries. Fortunately, the Mott The Hoople Under Review DVD attempts to address this slight by presenting a loving, complimentary history of this hard working English band via a fair and light critical analysis of the band’s albums and live shows. This 90 minute DVD is chockfull of information, most of it coming from the mouths of the band's famous fans like Mick Jones of The Clash, who’s interviewed along with many others in ‘The Mott Lot’, as well as studio engineers and producers who worked with the band, and the occasional video snippet from the one of the band members themselves — interviews not made for this DVD but taken from other sources. Much of the DVD features so-called “experts” discussing each Mott album and subsequent tours, the band’s unusual devotion to their fans, and consistent demystification of their position in the rock and roll hierarchy. In one sequence, one fan/expert talks about sharing a drink with Mott at a local pub, and then being invited to hang at the venue hours before the band was to perform. There are some really tasty live performances too, taken from maybe two or three different shows, which were precious too few.

Early inthe band added vocalist Stan Tippens and landed a record contract with Island Atlantic in the U. By the summer, Tippens was fired, later becoming the band's road manager, and was replaced by Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter: All the Young Dudes - The Biography Hunter. Their eponymous debut album was released in the fall of and became an underground hit, known for its fusion of Blonde on Blonde -era Dylan and heavy metal, its straight cover of Sonny Bono 's "Laugh at Me," and its pounding instrumental version of the Kinks ' "You Really Got Me. Despite all of the attention Mott the Hoople received, it didn't sell well and neither did its poorly reviewed follow-up, Mad Shadows. Synieokyi Doctor of Social Communications, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Philology and Publishing, Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University, Kremenchuk, Ukraine [email protected], [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1419-4964 THE STUDY OF SESSIONAL RECORDINGS OF 1962–1972 FROM THE BBC RADIOARCHIVE (THE BEATLES, PINK FLOYD, DEEP PURPLE) Due to the recent increase in research interest in phono documents, which were created specifically for radio, a documentary analysis of the creation of music programs of the British Broadcasting Corporation is provided. Particular attention is paid to an overview of the chronology of recording sessions for a number of selected bands from the BBC’s archival collection (1962–1972). The role of John Peel in the creation of creative music programs within the framework of “Radio 1” was noted. The study showed that the digitalization of archival space has brought new opportunities for finding lost rarities that were at the origins of rock music. Both positive and negative trends in the restoration and use of archived musical phonograms from radio storages are noted.
