  • As He Approaches 60, TONA WALT OHAMA Is Contemplating His Legacy and Opening up About His Unconventional Life and Remarkable Canon of Electronic Music
A SPECIAL LONG READ FROM As he approaches 60, TONA WALT OHAMA is contemplating his legacy and opening up about his unconventional life and remarkable canon of electronic music. He has fans worldwide and yet concedes: ‘Nobody really knows me.’ Don’t You Listen? A PROFILE BY DAVID VEITCH THEYYSCENE.COM ONA WALT OHAMA GREETS THE YYSCENE mid-day, mid-week, on a downtown street in Calgary. He’s tidily dressed in dark slacks and a blue patterned dress shirt; streaks of grey in his black hair are the most visible reminder he’s in his fourth decade of making music. Alice Cooper’s 1973 Billion Dollar Babies are the T facing covers. The apartment is a tight ft for two people (Mia, his wife of four years, lives in the apartment next to him) yet this is where Ohama has recorded all of his music since 2010, a decade that has proven to be the most productive and artistically restless of his career. A few weeks prior, Ohama hosted an artist reception at Arts Commons to launch his latest project, a 15-speak- er ambient music installation A Moment Of Quiet Refection In Downtown Calgary, which runs at the multi-venue arts centre until Aug. 31. “A woman came up to me and said, ‘You know this guy Walt Ohama? He used to do this music in the ’80s.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I know him.’ Now that’s not being recognized,” Ohama says, laughing in a way you can’t Despite having fans around the globe, the Canadian help but hear some hurt.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

  • Mott the Hoople ~ Mott the Hoople Under Review
Mott The Hoople ~ Mott The Hoople Under Review http://www.vintagerock.com/classiceye/mth_review.aspx Home About Us Forum Listening Room Giveaways Links Contact Us Mott The Hoople Under Review Mott The Hoople If ever there was a 70s band that is under appreciated, it’s Mott the Hoople. Though their fans are legendarily supportive, Mott really has never gotten the credit they deserve next to their contemporaries. Fortunately, the Mott The Hoople Under Review DVD attempts to address this slight by presenting a loving, complimentary history of this hard working English band via a fair and light critical analysis of the band’s albums and live shows. This 90 minute DVD is chockfull of information, most of it coming from the mouths of the band's famous fans like Mick Jones of The Clash, who’s interviewed along with many others in ‘The Mott Lot’, as well as studio engineers and producers who worked with the band, and the occasional video snippet from the one of the band members themselves — interviews not made for this DVD but taken from other sources. Much of the DVD features so-called “experts” discussing each Mott album and subsequent tours, the band’s unusual devotion to their fans, and consistent demystification of their position in the rock and roll hierarchy. In one sequence, one fan/expert talks about sharing a drink with Mott at a local pub, and then being invited to hang at the venue hours before the band was to perform. There are some really tasty live performances too, taken from maybe two or three different shows, which were precious too few.

Nevertheless, their nasty fusion of heavy metal, glam rock, Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter: All the Young Dudes - The Biography Bob Dylan 's sneering hipster cynicism provided the groundwork for many British punk bands, most notably the Clash. However, their lack of success meant that they inevitably splintered apart in the '70s, with Ralphs forming Bad Company and Hunter launching a cult solo career. Early inthe band added vocalist Stan Tippens and landed a record contract with Island Atlantic in the U. By the summer, Tippens was fired, later becoming the band's road manager, and was replaced by Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter: All the Young Dudes - The Biography Hunter. Their eponymous debut album was released in the fall of and became an underground hit, known for its fusion of Blonde on Blonde -era Dylan and heavy metal, its straight cover of Sonny Bono 's "Laugh at Me," and its pounding instrumental version of the Kinks ' "You Really Got Me. Despite all of the attention Mott the Hoople received, it didn't sell well and neither did its poorly reviewed follow-up, Mad Shadows. The band returned in with the country-tinged Wildlifewhich was its least popular record to date.

Particular attention is paid to an overview of the chronology of recording sessions for a number of selected bands from the BBC’s archival collection (1962–1972). The role of John Peel in the creation of creative music programs within the framework of “Radio 1” was noted. The study showed that the digitalization of archival space has brought new opportunities for finding lost rarities that were at the origins of rock music. Both positive and negative trends in the restoration and use of archived musical phonograms from radio storages are noted.
