  • "Die 11 Lieder Von Jenny Evans' CD Christmas Songs Sind Weit Entfernt
CHRISTMAS SONGS ENJ-9481 2 Heart warming Christmas Songs – the title is not quite as original as the music behind it. In comparison to Diana Krall’s CD Jenny Evans offers more unexpected tones. Her repertoire coincides with her Canadian colleague in two numbers („The Christmas Song“, „Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas“) but apart from that the English woman who lives in Munich gives her Christmas album a definite European touch. Most noticably in her choice of material: she’s searched through Eruopean folk tunes and as well as English has also discovered German, Austrian and Czech songs that have never been rendered in a jazzy way. Some go backe to the 16th century (e.g. „The Coventry Carol“) for Jenny Evans, who started her career with piano lessons with the Baroque specialist Trevor Pinnock, then sang with the Henrich Schütz Choir and the Munich Motettenchor an ideal area to merge her love of Early Music with jazz by no means stretches the bow too far. She gives a a latin groove to “Blessed Be That Maid Mary” with its Latin and English lyrics, her own lyrics and an Akro-Cuban rhythm to a Czech Christmas lullaby and the Austrian “Still, still, still“ a world music touch with drone and yodelling. When she does go turn to the American repertoire whtn it is with a medley of two popular standards (“Little Drummer Boy / Nature Boy”) that have never been heard together. With her dulcet voice this vocalist can warm your heart and that is the main thing at this season.

  • INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD a NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most Books and Article
INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD A NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE MARK OSTEEN, LOYOLA COLLEGE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most books and articles with "jazz" in the title are not simply about music. Instead, their authors generally use jazz music to investigate or promulgate ideas about politics or race (e.g., that jazz exemplifies democratic or American values,* or that jazz epitomizes the history of twentieth-century African Americans); to illustrate a philosophy of art (either a Modernist one or a Romantic one); or to celebrate the music as an expression of broader human traits such as conversa- tion, flexibility, and hybridity (here "improvisation" is generally the touchstone). These explorations of the broader cultural meanings of jazz constitute what is being touted as the New Jazz Studies. This proliferation of the meanings of "jazz" is not a bad thing, and in any case it is probably inevitable, for jazz has been employed as an emblem of every- thing but mere music almost since its inception. As Lawrence Levine demon- strates, in its formative years jazz—with its vitality, its sexual charge, its use of new technologies of reproduction, its sheer noisiness—was for many Americans a symbol of modernity itself (433). It was scandalous, lowdown, classless, obscene, but it was also joyous, irrepressible, and unpretentious. The music was a battlefield on which the forces seeking to preserve European high culture met the upstarts of popular culture who celebrated innovation, speed, and novelty. It 'Crouch writes: "the demands on and respect for the individual in the jazz band put democracy into aesthetic action" (161).

8/11/2016 Crazy on them: Heart by Heart returns to the Taste By Brian Soergel Edmonds, WA EdmondsBeacon.com Crazy on them: Heart by Heart returns to the Taste Spinoff band features members from local high schools By Brian Soergel | Aug 11, 2016 What’s your favorite Heart song? “Barracuda”? “Crazy on You”? “Magic Man?” Chances are you’ll hear them all when Heart by Heart returns to A Taste of Edmonds 7 p.m. Saturday on the main stage. But bassist Steve Fossen, an original member of Heart who formed Heart by Heart, said there is one particular tune Courtesy of: Janine Harles that really gets the crowd going, and Heart by Heart performs at a previous A Taste of Edmonds. it’s not a rocker – it’s the power ballad “Alone.” “That happens to be the very first Heart song that Somar ever learned,” said Fossen, referring to lead singer Somar Macek, who graduated from Meadowdale High School. “It always gets a strong response. It often brings people to their feet.” Somar sings because, as you might have guessed, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are not in the band. Which is not a “tribute” band, by the way. “Heart by Heart is technically a spinoff band, and has evolved into an authentic throwback and tribute to the legacy and songs of the '70s and '80s,” said Fossen who, along with bandmember and drummer Michael Derosier – who graduated from the old Woodway High School – was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Heart in 2013.

A PROFILE BY DAVID VEITCH THEYYSCENE.COM ONA WALT OHAMA GREETS THE YYSCENE mid-day, mid-week, on a downtown street in Calgary. The apartment is a tight ft for two people (Mia, his wife of four years, lives in the apartment next to him) yet this is where Ohama has recorded all of his music since 2010, a decade that has proven to be the most productive and artistically restless of his career. A few weeks prior, Ohama hosted an artist reception at Arts Commons to launch his latest project, a 15-speak- er ambient music installation A Moment Of Quiet Refection In Downtown Calgary, which runs at the multi-venue arts centre until Aug. 31. “A woman came up to me and said, ‘You know this guy Walt Ohama? He used to do this music in the ’80s.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I know him.’ Now that’s not being recognized,” Ohama says, laughing in a way you can’t Despite having fans around the globe, the Canadian help but hear some hurt.

  • For the Love of Gulf Branch: Arlington's Hidden Symbol of Smart Growth by CHARLES S
For the Love of Gulf Branch: Arlington's Hidden Symbol of Smart Growth BY CHARLES s. CLARK What The Devil Is AN ature Center? That was the prevailing view in Arlington of the early 1960s, according to proto-environmentalist and county board alumnae Dorothy Grotos, recalling her leading role in creation of the Gulf Branch Nature Center. Half a century later, the question is answered by the center's 16,600 annual visitors to the leafy Military Road site, its popular dugout canoe, its live "Ms. Owl" and its busy observational beehive. Not to mention the center's meditative tree arbors, hiking trails and active blacksmith shed. Toss in its status as an away-from-the-neon monument to smart growth and the past presence of a Hollywood legend, and Arlingtonians have a retreat and education site that commands a ferocious army of protectors. Current park naturalist Jennifer Soles, who has frequented Gulf Branch since 1980, has watched the center grow to offer 290 programs for school chil dren and the public in 2015, its quarterly events calendar ballooning from 1 page to 14, including those at the cross-town Long Branch Nature Center, she says. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gulf Branch's opening on June 12, 1966, an array of exhibits, a symposium and an outdoor party was staged by center staff, the Arlington Central Library and the nonprofit Friends of the Gulf Branch Nature Center. Among the impresarios was Duke Banks, the Friends' vice president and parks activist who has been taking his family to Gulf Branch since they "fell in love" with the idyll at a Christmas event in 1985.

PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA wynton marsalis series Silent night (1989) Background (from the liner notes to the album): As might be expected, the joy, reverence, play, and humor associated with the Christmas season dominate the moods of this Wynton Marsalis album. But the ease and precision with which a down-home and elegant victory has been achieved over the large challenge of arranging such familiar material will surprise even seasoned Marsalis listeners. What amounts to the thematic and emotional folklore of the winter holidays has been fused with the clarity of passion and musical sophistication expected of the best of the jazz tradition.
