Kavannah for Our Service

For this Fifth Friday Shabbat service we will experience by a diverse array of singer- songwriters in place of many of our traditional prayers. The intent is to lift up the prayers by viewing them through a new lens, and perhaps gain new insight into beloved, contemporary songs, whether familiar or new to us.

“Both Sides Now” speaks to several relevant themes in our service and in our hearts: • This week’s Torah portion, B’Shallah, begins with our Israeilite ancestors in slavery, on one side of the Sea of Reeds and ends with them as a newly freed people on the other side. Our D’var Torah will lift up several phrases from the song in this context. • We’re crossing a divide in our country’s history – moving through a transition of power and governance. • With this new beginning, we fervently hope both sides will emerge united. • Musically, our service celebrates singer-songwriters – artists who embody both sides of song creation: writing and singing. • Our musical time period spans both “then and now” with songs from the 20th and 21st centuries – both sides of the millennium. • And, of course, we are here tonight to explore a different side of ourselves. All week, we each inhabit the side that deals with everyday concerns. Tonight, we make a crossing to another side – to explore, reflect upon, and experience the of Shabbat.

This “Both Sides Now” Fifth Friday Service was made possible by the collective efforts of Etz Chayim congregants. Special thanks to our Shabbat coordination team of Rhea Feldman (siddur and logistical coordination), Naomi Temes (music director), Mitch Slomiak (siddur, d’var torah, and mentor to Rhea), Ken Abrams (video production), and Ron Shipper (tech). We are grateful for Maya Wax Caravallo, who co- produced the Brave video, and to Danielle Sigura who provided choreography for Happy. The kavannot (intentions) were written by Rhea and Mitch with guidance from Rabbi Chaim. In addition to our production team, Melissa Dinwiddie and Judith Sharon participated in helping to select tunes. ‘Yasher koach’ to all the congregants who participated in leading songs and reading prayers, whether virtually or in real-time. And our continued thanks to both Ellen Bob and Rabbi Chaim Koritzinsky who supported us throughout this process.

Please note that minor in lyrics were made on occasion to better fit the kavannah of the Shabbat service. When words such as “you” are spelled as “Y0u” it is intended to connote an interpretation of addressing G0d or “higher power.” Both Sides Now Shabbat, 1/29/21 • Shabbat Evening Service, page 2

KABBALAT SHABBAT

Kavannah We begin our service with two songs to help transition from the week of striving to our Shabbat “palace in time.” These songs weave together the happiness of Shabbat and our communal gathering, as well as our love for one another and the divine.

Happy, excerpt, by Pharrell Williams Pharrell Williams | lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Warner Chappell Music, Inc.

Might seem crazy what I’m ‘bout to say Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break I’m a -- hot air balloon that could go to space With the air, like I don’t care, baby, by the way

CHORUS: (Because I’m happy) Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof (Because I’m happy) Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth (Because I’m happy) Clap along if you know what happiness is to you (Because I’m happy) Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

Here come bad news, talking this and that Give me all you got, don't hold it back I should probably warn ya, I’ll be just fine No offense to you, don’t waste your time. Here’s why

Shower the People (You Love With Love), excerpt, by Songwriter: James V Taylor| lyrics © Country Road Music, Inc.

You can play the game and you can act out the part, Though you know it wasn't written for you. Tell me, how can you stand there with your heart Ashamed of playing the fool? One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice. Oh, father and mother, sister and brother, if it feels nice, don't think twice,

Just shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel. Things are gonna work out fine if you only will. Do as I say, just Shower the people you love with love, show them the way you feel. Things are gonna be much better if you only will.

You can run but you cannot hide, this is widely known. What you plan to do with your foolish pride when you're all by yourself, alone. Once you tell somebody the way that you feel, you can feel it beginning to ease. I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel always getting the grease.

Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel. Things are gonna be just fine if you only will. (REPEAT several times)

CREATION Kavannah This song is a modern reminder that we are charged with our ancient mandate of honoring and protecting the Earth, G0d’s precious creation.

Big Yellow Taxi, by Songwriter: Joni Mitchell | lyrics © Crazy Crow Music

CHORUS Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone? They paved paradise. Put up a parking lot

They paved paradise. Put up a parking lot With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swinging hot spot

CHORUS

They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em

CHORUS

Hey, farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the beesl Please!

CHORUS

Late last night I heard the screen door slam And a big yellow taxi took my girl away.

CHORUS

FINAL CHORUS: I said… Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone? They paved paradise, put up a parking lot (REPEAT 3X)

REVELATION

Kavannah We use the lyrics of this reflective reading to consider that revelation can take place in every generation. There is a reciprocal aspect in which G0d is revealed to us through our newly opened eyes and we reveal ourselves to G0d through our words and actions.

I Choose Y0u, excerpt, by Songwriter: Sara Beth Bareilles, Jason Converse Blynn, Peter William Harper | lyrics © Sony/atv Tunes LLC, Tiny Bear Music, Gorilla Man, Earl The Squirrel

Let the bough break, let it come down crashing Let the sun fade out to a dark sky I can't say I'd even notice it was absent ‘Cause I could live by the light in Y0ur eyes

I'll unfold before Y0u Would have strung together The very first words Of a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all right I choose Y0u... I will become Y0urs and Y0u will become mine I choose Y0u...

INTRODUCTION TO THE SH’MA

Kavannah Joni Mitchell’s beautiful song, “Both Sides Now,” can help us contemplate the theme of Oneness expressed by the Sh’ma. How does seeing things from "Both Sides" help us prepare to embrace Oneness?

Both Sides Now, by Joni Mitchell Songwriter: Joni Mitchell | lyrics © Crazy Crow Music/Siquomb Music Publishing)

Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show You leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take, and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud To say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all

SH'MA You may remain seated or stand, as is your custom

V'Ahavta Kavannah We imagine Adonay singing the chorus to us and we respond with the verses, expressing our love for HaShem with all our hearts, our minds, our intensity.

All of Me, excerpt, by John Legend Songwriters: John Stephens, Tobias Gad | lyrics © BMG Rights Management, Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Songtrust Ave, Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd.

How many times do I have to tell Y0u Even when I’m crying Y0u’re beautiful too The world is beating me down, Y0u’re around through every mood Y0u’re my downfall, Y0u’re my muse My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for Y0u

My head’s under water But I’m breathing fine Y0u’re crazy and I’m out of my mind.

CHORUS ‘Cause all of Me Loves all of you Love your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to Me I’ll give My all to you You’re My end and My beginning Even when I lose I’m winning ‘Cause I give you all of Me And you give Me all of you, oh oh.

Give me all of Y0u Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts Risking it all, though it’s hard

CHORUS

I give Y0u all of me And Y0u give me all of Y0u, oh oh

Hashkiveynu / Lay Us Down

Kavannah The Hashkiveynu prayer is our way of saying “In G0d we trust.” One can approach the song Beautiful as if it is a soothing lullaby sung to us by G0d, offering us hope to make it through our dark times. As the song says, “The sun will always shine and tomorrow you’ll awake on the other side.”

Beautiful, by Linda Perry, as recorded by Christina Aguillera Songwriter: Linda Perry | lyrics © Sony/atv Harmony, Stuck In the Throat Music

Every day is so wonderful FINAL CHORUS: Then suddenly it's hard to breathe Cause we are beautiful If now and then you get insecure no matter what they say From all the pain Yes, words won't bring us down, no, no Don’t be ashamed We are beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring us down, oh, no CHORUS: Don’t let them bring us down today You are beautiful no matter what they say Ooh-oh-oh, yeah Words can't bring you down Don’t let them bring us down today. You are beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no Don’t let them bring you down today

AMIDAH Kavannah We will recite the traditional opening prayer, listen together to reflective music (“Make You Feel My Love”) as we contemplate lyrics from singer/songwriters as alternative prayers for each section of the Amidah.

Avoteynu v’Imoteynu (G0d of Our Ancestors)

Kavannah There is a discussion in Talmud Bava Bathra 16b:10 in which Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Yehuda are arguing over a blessing that uses the word bakkol in Genesis 24:1. “And the Lord blessed Abraham with everything [bakkol]” According to Rabbi Yehuda: “…the blessing was that he had a daughter.” … “Others say: Abraham had a daughter and her name was Bakkol.” This song by Arcade Fire enables us to contemplate the untold stories and mysteries of our ancestors as we reflect on their relevance in our present-day reality.

Abraham’s Daughter, by Arcade Fire Songwriters: Regine Chassagne, Win Butler, T Bone Burnett| lyrics © WB Music Corp., Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., Henry Burett Music, A Lion Music, B Lion Music

Abraham took Isaac's hand And led him to the lonesome hill While his daughter hid and watched She dared not breathe she was so still

Just as an angel cried for the slaughter Abraham's daughter raised her voice

Then the angel asked her what her Name was she said I have none Then he asked how can this be My father never gave me one

And when he saw her raised for the slaughter Abraham's daughter raised her bow How darest you child defy your father You better let young Isaac go

K’dushat Hayom (The Holy Day)

Chelsea Morning, excerpt, by Joni Mitchell Songwriter: Joni Mitchell | lyrics © Gandalf Publishing Co.

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning And the first thing that I heard Was a song outside my window And the traffic wrote the words It came ringin' up like festival bells And rappin' up like pipes and drums

Oh, won't Y0u stay? We'll put on the day And we'll wear it till the night comes

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning And the first thing that I saw Was the sun through yellow curtains And a rainbow on the wall Blue, red, green and gold to welcome Y0u Crimson crystal beads to beckon

Oh, won't Y0u stay? We'll put on the day There's a sun show every second

Now the curtain opens on a portrait of today And the streets are paved with passersby And pigeons fly and papers lie, waiting to blow away

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning And the first thing that I knew There was milk and toast and honey And a bowl of oranges, too And the sun poured in like butterscotch And stuck to all my senses

Oh, won't Y0u stay? We'll put on the day And we'll talk in present tenses

R’Tzeih (Accept Our Prayer)

Hello, excerpt, by Songwriters: Adele Adkins, | lyrics © EMI April Music Inc., Kurstin Music, Melted Stone Publishing Ltd.

Hello, it's me I was wondering if after all these years Y0u’d like to meet To go over everything They say that time's supposed to heal ya But I ain't done much healing

Hello, can Y0u hear me? I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be When we were younger and free I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet

There's such a difference between us And a million miles

Hello from the other side I must've called a thousand times To tell Y0u I'm sorry for everything that I've done But when I call, Y0u never seem to be home

Hello from the outside At least I can say that I've tried To tell you I'm sorry for breaking Y0ur heart But it don't matter, it clearly doesn't tear Y0u apart anymore

The Secret Of Life, excerpt, by James Taylor Songwriter: James Taylor | lyrics © Country Road Music Incorporate, USA, SBK Songs Limited

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time There ain't nothing to it Any fool can do it Nobody knows how we got to The top of the hill But since we're on our way down We might as well enjoy the ride

The secret of love is in opening up your heart It's okay to feel afraid But don't let that stand in your way 'Cause anyone knows that love is the only road

And since we're only here for a while We might as well show some style Come on, give us a smile

Isn't it a lovely ride? Sliding down Gliding down Try not to try too hard It's just a lovely ride

Now the thing about time is that time Isn't really real It's just your point of view How does it feel for you Einstein said he could never understand it all Isn't it a lovely ride? Planets spinning through space See me sliding down The smile upon your face Gliding down Welcome to the human race Try not to try too hard It's just a lovely ride

The secret of life Is enjoying the passage of time

Make You Feel My Love, by Bob Dylan, as recorded by Adele Songwriter: Bob Dylan | lyrics © Special Rider Music

When the rain is blowing in your face And the whole world is on your case I could offer a warm embrace To make you feel my love

When evening shadows and the stars appear And there is no one there to dry your tears I could hold you for a million years To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet But I would never do you wrong I've known it from the moment that we met No doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue I'd go crawling down the avenue And oh, there's nothing that I wouldn't do To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rolling sea And on the highway of regret The winds of change are blowing wild and free You ain't seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true Nothing that I wouldn't do Go to the ends of the earth for you To make you feel my love

A Prayer for Healing

Kavannah Who can we count on when we are experiencing an ailment of the body or the spirit? Our healing song reminds us of the role that family, friends, and community play, as we express our hopes and gratitude together.

You’ve Got a Friend, excerpt, by , as recorded by James Taylor Songwriter: Carole King | lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC

When you're down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothin', nothin' is goin' right Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest night

CHORUS: You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come runnin' to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall All you have to do is call And I'll be there You've got a friend

If the sky above you Grows dark and full of clouds And that ol' north wind begins to blow Keep your head together And call my name out loud Soon you'll hear me knockin' at your door

CHORUS You’ve got a friend. Ain’t it good to know—you’ve got a friend

D’Var Torah

At the conclusion of the D’var Torah we will have an opportunity to sing and dance together to this wonderful song.

Miriam’s Song, by Debbie Friedman Songwriter: Debbie Friedman | lyrics © A Side Music Llc

CHORUS And the women dancing with their timbrels Followed Miriam as she sang her song Sing a song to the One whom we've exalted. Miriam and the women danced and danced the whole night long.

And Miriam was a weaver of unique variety. The tapestry she wove was one which sang our history. With every thread and every strand she crafted her delight. A woman touched with spirit, she dances toward the light.

CHORUS

As Miriam stood upon the shores and gazed across the sea, The wonder of this miracle she soon came to believe. Whoever thought the sea would part with an outstretched hand, And we would pass to freedom, and march to the promised land.

CHORUS

And Miriam the Prophet took her timbrel in her hand, And all the women followed her just as she had planned. And Miriam raised her voice with song. She sang with praise and might, We've just lived through a miracle, we're going to dance tonight.

CHORUS

Introduction to the Mourners’ Kaddish Kavannah James Taylor evokes the pain of grieving and searches for hope during a difficult time. After experiencing this song, we will recite the traditional Mourners’ Kaddish.

Fire And Rain, excerpt, by James Taylor Songwriter: James V Taylor | lyrics © Emi Blackwood Music Inc., Country Road Music, Inc.

Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone. Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you. I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song, I just can't remember who to send it to.

CHORUS: I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again.

Won't Y0u look down upon me, HaShem. Y0u've got to make a stand. Y0u've just got to see me through another day. My body's aching and my time is at hand and I won't make it any other way. Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again.

FINAL CHORUS: Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again. I always thought that I'd see you again. I always thought that I'd see you again.

Kavannah As parents, we do our best to love and bless our children through all the stages of their lives.

Circle Game, excerpt, by Joni Mitchell Songwriter: Joni Mitchell | lyrics © Crazy Crow Music, Crazy Crow Music/diverse Titlar

Yesterday a child came out to wonder Caught a dragonfly inside a jar Fearful when the sky was full of thunder And tearful at the falling of a star

CHORUS: And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time

We can't return we can only look Behind from where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons Skated over ten clear streams Words like, when you're older, must appease him And promises of someday make his dreams

CHORUS

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town And they tell him, Take your time, it won't be long now Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down

So the years by and now the boy is twenty Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through

CHORUS

Closing Song

Kavannah Hallelujah was chosen as the tune to Adon Olam not only because, in Leonard Cohen, we have another example of a stunning singer-songwriter. It also is a fitting close for our “Both Sides Now” service because the utterance “Hallelujah” reminds us of two sides of Shabbat -- joy and awe. Shabbat Shalom!
