The intent is to lift up the prayers by viewing them through a new lens, and perhaps gain new insight into beloved, contemporary songs, whether familiar or new to us. “Both Sides Now” speaks to several relevant themes in our service and in our hearts: • This week’s Torah portion, B’Shallah, begins with our Israeilite ancestors in slavery, on one side of the Sea of Reeds and ends with them as a newly freed people on the other side. Our D’var Torah will lift up several phrases from the song in this context. • We’re crossing a divide in our country’s history – moving through a transition of power and governance. • With this new beginning, we fervently hope both sides will emerge united. • Musically, our service celebrates singer-songwriters – artists who embody both sides of song creation: writing and singing. • Our musical time period spans both “then and now” with songs from the 20th and 21st centuries – both sides of the millennium. • And, of course, we are here tonight to explore a different side of ourselves. All week, we each inhabit the side that deals with everyday concerns. Tonight, we make a crossing to another side – to explore, reflect upon, and experience the joy of Shabbat. This “Both Sides Now” Fifth Friday Service was made possible by the collective efforts of Etz Chayim congregants. Special thanks to our Shabbat coordination team of Rhea Feldman (siddur and logistical coordination), Naomi Temes (music director), Mitch Slomiak (siddur, d’var torah, and mentor to Rhea), Ken Abrams (video production), and Ron Shipper (tech). We are grateful for Maya Wax Caravallo, who co- produced the Brave video, and to Danielle Sigura who provided choreography for Happy. The kavannot (intentions) were written by Rhea and Mitch with guidance from Rabbi Chaim. In addition to our production team, Melissa Dinwiddie and Judith Sharon participated in helping to select tunes. ‘Yasher koach’ to all the congregants who participated in leading songs and reading prayers, whether virtually or in real-time. And our continued thanks to both Ellen Bob and Rabbi Chaim Koritzinsky who supported us throughout this process. Please note that minor changes in lyrics were made on occasion to better fit the kavannah of the Shabbat service. When words such as “you” are spelled as “Y0u” it is intended to connote an interpretation of addressing G0d or “higher power.” Both Sides Now Shabbat, 1/29/21 • Shabbat Evening Service, page 2 KABBALAT SHABBAT Kavannah We begin our service with two songs to help transition from the week of striving to our Shabbat “palace in time.” These songs weave together the happiness of Shabbat and our communal gathering, as well as our love for one another and the divine. Both Sides Now Shabbat, 1/29/21 • Shabbat Evening Service, page 4 Shower the People (You Love With Love), excerpt, by James Taylor Songwriter: James V Taylor| lyrics © Country Road Music, Inc. You can play the game and you can act out the part, Though you know it wasn't written for you. Tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart Ashamed of playing the fool? One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice. Oh, father and mother, sister and brother, if it feels nice, don't think twice, Just shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel. Things are gonna work out fine if you only will. Do as I say, just Shower the people you love with love, show them the way you feel. Things are gonna be much better if you only will. You can run but you cannot hide, this is widely known. What you plan to do with your foolish pride when you're all by yourself, alone. Once you tell somebody the way that you feel, you can feel it beginning to ease. I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel always getting the grease. Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel. Things are gonna be just fine if you only will. CHORUS Late last night I heard the screen door slam And a big yellow taxi took my girl away.
