All rights reserved A Review of the Systematics of Hawaiian Planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea)l MANFRED ASCHE2 ABSTRACT: With 206 endemic species, the phytophagous Fulgoroidea, or planthop pers, are among the most important elements of the native Hawaiian fauna. These principally monophagous or oligophagous insects occur in nearly all Hawaiian terrestrial ecosystems. Species of two of the 18 planthopper families occurring worldwide have successfully colonized and subsequently radiated in Hawai'i. Based on collections made mainly by Perkins, Kirkaldy, Muir, Giffard, and Swezey, more than 95% of these species were described in the first three decades of this century. The systematics of the Hawaiian planthoppers has changed little in the past 60 yr and is not based on any phylogenetic analyses. This paper attempts a preliminary phylogenetic evaluation ofthe native Hawaiian p1anthoppers on the basis ofcompara tive morphology to recognize monophyletic taxa and major evolutionary lines. The following taxa are each descendants of single colonizing species: in Cixiidae, the Hawaiian Oliarus and Iolania species; in De1phacidae, Aloha partim, Dictyophoro delphax, Emoloana, Leialoha + Nesothoe, Nesodryas, and at least four groups within Nesosydne. Polyphyletic taxa are the tribe "Alohini," Aloha s.l., Nesorestias, Nesosydne s.l., and Nothorestias. Non-Hawaiian species currently placed in Iolania, Oliarus, Aloha, Leialoha, and Nesosydne are not closely allied to the Hawaiian taxa. The origin of the Hawaiian planthoppers is obscure. The Hawaiian Oliorus appear to have affinities to (North) American taxa. Six new species are described: Asc~lphmhock Wilson, Delphumdes anufrievi Wilson, D. erneljanovi Wilson, Javesella I& Wilson, Nothodelphaxg2acia Wilson, and Yuhnodelphax kendallae Wilson. Check list of the planthoppers and leafhoppers of Germany, with notes on food plants, diet width, life cycles, geographic range and conservation status (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha and Cicadomorpha) Herbert Nickel1 and Reinhard Remane2 Abstract: An annotated check list of the planthoppers and leafhoppers of Germany is presented, with specifications of food plants, diet width, overwintering stage, annual generation numbers, geographic range and conservation status. The list includes 620 species, comprising 145 planthoppers and 475 leafhoppers. Five taxa, which were com- monly considered as separate species, are treated as morphs or varieties of other species. On the other hand, in a number of cases there is evidence that a taxon hitherto regarded as a single species may comprise at least two species. Three names are declared as new synonyms. Acericerus rotundifrons (Ribaut 1952) nec Kirschbaum, 1868 is given a new name and described as Acericerus ribauti. Six species probably breed only irregularly, and at least four are neozoa originating from North America, Asia or the Mediterranean region. Acoustic signals were recorded via microphone and tape recorder, and analyzed sonographically and oscillographically. Male common calls of 10 Dalbulus spp. were compared using duration and rate measurements of call parts (sections, phases, and pulses), amplitude ratios of pulses, and dominant frequencies. Call types were characteristic based on repeated measures analysis of variance followed by Scott-Knott mean separation. Common calls had significant variations among species but no one acoustic variable uniquely identified a species. A multivariate hierarchical cluster analysis of calls partitioned Dalbulus species into three groups: 1) D. quinquenotatus DeLong & Nault and D. chiapensis Triple- horn & Nault; 2) D. longulus DeLong, D. guevarai DeLong, and D. elimatus (Ball); 3) D. maidis (DeLong & Wolcott), D. chariest Triplehorn & Nault, D. tripsacoides DeLong & Nault, D. gelbus DeLong, and D. guzmani DeLong & Nault. With the exception of D. guzmani, groupings of species based on male common calls are similar to groupings of species based on cladistic analysis of morphological characters. Beside common calls, Dal- bulus males produce courtship calls, copulatory calls, rivalry calls, and distress calls. Court- ship calls were recorded from Dalbulus females. The basic pattern of courtship and copu- lation for Dalbulus leafhoppers is described. -

Abstract. The planthopper family Delphacidae is a speciose lineage of phloem- feeding insects, with many species considered as pests of economic significance on essential world food commodities (including rice, maize, wheat, barley and sugar cane). Despite their economic importance, evolutionary relationships among delphacids, particularly those within the speciose tribe Delphacini, are largely unknown. Presented here are the results of a phylogenetic investigation of Delphacidae based on DNA nucleotide sequence data from four genetic loci (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, wingless and cytochrome oxidase I ) and 132 coded morphological characters. The resulting topologies are used to test the higher classification of Delphacidae and to examine evolutionary patterns in host–plant associations. Our results generally support the higher classifications of Delphacidae proposed by Asche, Emeljanov and Hamilton, and suggest that the rapid diversification of the Delphacini was associated with host shifts to, and within, Poaceae, and specifically from C3 to C4 grasses.
