A Study on the Idiom Translation in the Dark Forest Under Hermeneutic Theory
Annals of Language and Literature Volume 3, Issue 3, 2019, PP 41-49 ISSN 2637-5869 A Study on the Idiom Translation in the Dark Forest under Hermeneutic Theory Xu Zhengqiu*, Lyu Liangqiu School of Foreign Languages, North China Electric Power University, Beijing, China *Corresponding Author: Xu Zhengqiu, School of Foreign Languages, North China Electric Power University, Beijing, China, Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Liu Cixin’s The Dark Forest translated by Joel Martinson is a science fiction popular among readers at home and abroad. A large number of idioms in the fiction contain profound Chinese culture significance and play an important role in translation quality. Based on George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory of translation, this paper analyses the embodiment of the fourfold translation motion in idiom translation and summarizes the strategies to translate the idioms in the Chinese version of The Dark Forest. With a careful analysis of 102 idioms in total, the study finds that George Steiner’s Fourfold Translation Motion Theory provides a good explanation to the process of idiom translation: first, Martinson trust that the fiction is evaluated as meaningful in terms of the value of the fiction itself and his person competence; second, he invades the source text out of his cultural consciousness and his linguistic competence; third, the meaning and form of those idioms in the fiction is transferred as much as possible; fourthly, a large degree of equivalence is reached by compensation of rewriting. Moreover, although the translator is flexible in applying domestication and foreignization to idiom translation, he prefers to adopting domestication to make the translation easier to understand. -

RUNNING HEAD: A STUDY OF CHINESE COUPLETS ON STRUCTURES IN HONG KONG 14th ICLICE Seoul 2019 057-043 Chiu Kay Tang A STUDY OF CHINESE COUPLETS ON STRUCTURES IN HONG KONG Chiu Kay Tang Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Chu Hai College of Higher Education 80 Castle Peak Road, Castle Peak Bay, New Territories, Hong Kong [email protected] Abstract The couplet is an important Chinese cultural heritage. It is a combination of the artistry of using the Chinese language in a poetic manner and writing the Chinese characters in an aesthetic way. Hong Kong has numerous places, sites, or historic buildings which are adorned with couplets. Many of these couplets are not only very well-composed by famous writers but also very well-written by famous calligraphers. Information on the history, culture, and anecdotes of the literary arena of Hong Kong provided by these couplets may contribute to a better understanding of local history, customs and behaviour of the inhabitants. The ongoing 2-year research aims to salvage this precious part of Hong Kong literature, art, and culture by recording couplets posted or inscribed on outdoor and indoor structures in Hong Kong before they are destroyed in the course of time. It employs a combination of the methods of field study, library research, and data analysis. Field study consists of visiting sites where couplets are likely to be found, targeted structures being temples, pavilions, pagodas, quadrangles, and Chinese gardens. After the couplets are recorded and photographed, the research assistant will go to the Public Records Office and libraries to search the archives for their background information. -
Distinctive Features of Chinese Proverbs: a Comparative Study of Suyu and Yanyu and Other Types of Shuyu
ROCZNIKI HUMANISTYCZNE Tom LXIV, zeszyt 9 – 2016 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18290/rh.2016.64.9-3 NASTAZJA STOCH * DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF CHINESE PROVERBS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SUYU AND YANYU AND OTHER TYPES OF SHUYU A b s t r a c t. This paper is an attempt to lay out the distinctive features of Chinese proverbs. Because of the frequent inconsistency of applying Chinese terms that could stand for ‘proverbs’ (i.e. suyu and yanyu), it seems necessary to define them by juxtaposing them with other, apparently similar types of fixed expressions. The typological analysis in this paper shows that there are no particular valid reasons not to treat suyu as proverbs, and thus as synonymous to yanyu. Further, the paper outlines the variety of content of Chinese proverbs and provides some of their structural patterns, with special attention to the variation phenomenon. Finally, it centers upon the metaphoricity of proverbs, which is a crucial means, especially in studies of linguistic worldview. The body of work concerning Chinese phraseology is quite extensive. It involves numerous dictionaries of idiomatic phrases, papers on acquisition of Chinese as a second language, works in the field of metaphor study, in corpus linguistics, and such. However, attempts to focus on discerning the idiomatic phrases specific to Chinese language are not widespread. This paper is an attempt to point out the characteristics of Chinese pro- verbs by, firstly, discriminating them from among other idiomatic expres- sions present in Chinese language, and, secondly, by determining their cha- racteristic features. In investigations on the matter there is an inconsistency in applying the Chinese terms for fixed expressions, and thereby those for proverbs, what causes that the scope of Chinese suyu proverbs in particular is defined incoherently, and, in consequence, there appears to be a blur between suyu and other similar Chinese expressions. -
Language Policy in the People's Republic of China Theory And
Language Policy in the People’s Republic of China Theory and Practice Since 1949 Language Policy VOLUME 4 Series Editors: Bernard Spolsky, Bar-Ilan University, Israel Elana Shohamy, Tel Aviv University, Israel Editorial Board: Claire Kramsch, University of California at Berkeley, USA Georges Lüdi, University of Basel, Switzerland Normand Labrie, University of Toronto, Canada Anne Pakir, Singapore University, Singapore John Trim, Former Fellow, Selwyn College, Cambridge, UK Guadalupe Valdes, Stanford University, USA The last half century has witnessed an explosive shift in language diversity not unlike the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel, but involving now a rapid spread of global languages and an associated threat to small languages. The diffusion of global languages, the stampede towards English, the counter-pressures in the form of ethnic efforts to reverse or slow the process, the continued determination of nation-states to assert national identity through language, and, in an opposite direction, the greater tolerance shown to multilingualism and the increasing concern for language rights, all these are working to make the study of the nature and possibilities of language policy and planning a field of swift growth. The series will publish empirical studies of general language policy or of language education policy, or monographs dealing with the theory and general nature of the field. We welcome detailed accounts of language policy-making - who is involved, what is done, how it develops, why it is attempted. We will publish research dealing with the development of policy under different conditions and the effect of implementation. We will be interested in accounts of policy development by governments and governmental agencies, by large international companies, foundations, and organizations, as well as the efforts of groups attempting to resist or modify governmental policies. -

The focus is firstly on describing the factors that affect the production of each of the translations and secondly on identifying and determining the approaches and strategies used by the two translators. The primary objective of the study is to gain a better understanding of literary translation between two distinctly different languages by objectively describing and analyzing the factors relevant to the production of the two translations. The secondary objective is to evaluate the two translations by using the functionalist approach to translation. To this end, the study determines which of the two translations better serves the purpose of providing South African students of Chinese with insight into and appreciation of some aspects of Chinese culture which would enhance their Chinese studies. -
