Influences on the Development of Early Modern English Kyli Larson Wright This article covers the basic social, historical, and linguistic influences that have transformed the English language. Research first describes components of Early Modern English, then discusses how certain factors have altered the lexicon, phonology, and other components. Though there are many factors that have shaped English to what it is today, this article only discusses major factors in simple and straightforward terms. 72 Introduction The history of the English language is long and complicated. Our language has shifted, expanded, and has eventually transformed into the lingua franca of the modern world. During the Early Modern English period, from 1500 to 1700, countless factors influenced the development of English, transforming it into the language we recognize today. While the history of this language is complex, the purpose of this article is to determine and map out the major historical, social, and linguistic influences. Also, this article helps to explain the reasons for their influence through some examples and evidence of writings from the Early Modern period. Historical Factors One preliminary historical event that majorly influenced the development of the language was the establishment of the print- ing press. Created in 1476 by William Caxton at Westminster, London, the printing press revolutionized the current language form by creating a means for language maintenance, which helped English gravitate toward a general standard. Manuscripts could be reproduced quicker than ever before, and would be identical copies. Because of the printing press spelling variation would eventually decrease (it was fixed by 1650), especially in re- ligious and literary texts. -

LANGUAGE AND DIALECT CONTACT IN SPANISH IN NEW YORK: TOWARD THE FORMATION OF A SPEECH COMMUNITY RICARDO OTHEGUY ANA CELIA ZENTELLA DAVID LIVERT Graduate Center, University of California, Pennsylvania State CUNY San Diego University, Lehigh Valley Subject personal pronouns are highly variable in Spanish but nearly obligatory in many contexts in English, and regions of Latin America differ significantly in rates and constraints on use. We investigate language and dialect contact by analyzing these pronouns in a corpus of 63,500 verbs extracted from sociolinguistic interviews of a stratified sample of 142 members of the six largest Spanish-speaking communities in New York City. A variationist approach to rates of overt pro- nouns and variable and constraint hierarchies, comparing speakers from different dialect regions (Caribbeans vs. Mainlanders) and different generations (those recently arrived vs. those born and/ or raised in New York), reveals the influence of English on speakers from both regions. In addition, generational changesin constrainthierarchiesdemonstratethat Caribbeansand Mainlandersare accommodating to one another. Both dialect and language contact are shaping Spanish in New York City and promoting, in the second generation, the formation of a New York Spanish speech community.* 1. INTRODUCTION. The Spanish-speaking population of New York City (NYC), which constitutesmorethan twenty-five percent of the City’stotal, tracesitsorigins to what are linguistically very different parts of Latin America. For example, Puerto Rico and Mexico, the sources of one of the oldest and one of the newest Spanish- speaking groups in NYC respectively, have been regarded as belonging to different areasfrom the earliesteffortsat dividing Latin America into dialect zones(Henrı ´quez Uren˜a 1921, Rona 1964). -

A CORPUS·BASED INVESTIGATION OF XHOSA ENGLISH IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS of RHODES UNIVERSITY by CANDICE LEE PLATT January 2004 Supervisor: Professor V.A de K1erk ABSTRACT This study is an investigation of Xhosa English as used by teachers in the Grahamstown area of the Eastern Cape. The aims of the study were firstly, to compile a 20 000 word mini-corpus of the spoken English of Xhosa mother tongue teachers in Grahamstown, and to use this data to describe the characteristics of Xhosa English used in the classroom context; and secondly, to assess the usefulness of a corpus-based approach to a study of this nature. The English of five Xhosa mother-tongue teachers was investigated. These teachers were recorded while teaching in English and the data was then transcribed for analysis. The data was analysed using Wordsmith Tools to investigate patterns in the teachers' language. Grammatical, lexical and discourse patterns were explored based on the findings of other researchers' investigations of Black South African English and Xhosa English. In general, many of the patterns reported in the literature were found in the data, but to a lesser extent than reported in literature which gave quantitative information. Some features not described elsewhere were also found . MANAGING FRANCE’S REGIONAL LANGUAGES: LANGUAGE POLICY IN BILINGUAL PRIMARY EDUCATION IN ALSACE Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Michelle Anne Harrison September 2012 Abstract The introduction of regional language bilingual education in France dates back to the late 1960s in the private education system and to the 1980s in the public system. Before this time the extensive use of regional languages was forbidden in French schools, which served as ‘local centres for the gallicisation of France’ (Blackwood 2008, 28). France began to pursue a French-only language policy from the time of the 1789 Revolution, with Jacobin ideology proposing that to be French, one must speak French. Thus began the shaping of France into a nation-state. As the result of the official language policy that imposed French in all public domains, as well as extra-linguistic factors such as the Industrial Revolution and the two World Wars, a significant language shift occurred in France during the twentieth century, as an increasing number of parents chose not to pass on their regional language to the next generation. In light of the decline in intergenerational transmission of the regional languages, Judge (2007, 233) concludes that ‘in the short term, everything depends on education in the [regional languages]’. This thesis analyses the development of language policy in bilingual education programmes in Alsace; Spolsky’s tripartite language policy model (2004), which focuses on language management, language practices and language beliefs, will be employed. In spite of the efforts of the State to impose the French language, in Alsace the traditionally non-standard spoken regional language variety, Alsatian, continued to be used widely until the mid-twentieth century. -

Determining language contact effects in ancient contact situations Sarah Thomason University of Michigan Proving the existence of ancient language contacts is easy; proving the existence of ancient contact-induced language change is much more difficult, by compari- son to analyses of modern contact situations. This paper surveys some ancient contacts and their effects on the languages. The main conclusion is that the historical methods used for analyzing better-documented contact situations can be applied to ancient contact situations as well. But the chances for success are likely to be more limited, because gaps in the available information may make it impossible to satisfy the prerequisites for proposing contact-induced changes. 1. Introduction. Language contact is almost as old as humankind. It has surely been a constant feature of human culture for as long as humans have spoken more than one language|which, if we assume a monogenetic origin for humans and therefore for human language, would presumably have been somewhere from several hundred to several thousand years after the beginning, depending on when the earliest speech community broke up into two or more subcommunities or separate communities. Evidence of language contact, however, is much more recent. To a certain extent we can infer the existence of language contacts from known population movements and cultural practices. So, for instance, the amount of linguistic diversity in New Guinea, with its thou- sand or so languages, must have taken many millennia to develop (even before Austronesian speakers arrived a few thousand years ago to settle around the island's coast), and there is no reason to suppose that the intensive language contact that characterizes the island is a modern phenomenon. -

Attitudes Towards State Languages versus Minority Languages in the Contemporary World: The Case of Catalan in Sardinia by José María Santos Rovira (University of Lisbon) Abstract The dichotomy of state language versus minority languages is a well-known subject among linguists. However, there are several competing perceptions of the role that minority languages play in society. In Italy, Catalan is a minority language and has been spoken for centuries in the Sardinian city of Alghero. Today, however, its survival is uncertain. Why have Algherese people progressively abandoned the Catalan language over last few decades? To answer this question, we begin by reviewing the range of scholars‘ interpretations of the motivations and attitudes that lead people to reproduce or abandon minority languages. In this article, I argue that there is an unavoidable link between social systems and linguistic practices that determines the consolidation or extinction of some languages, as has happened in Alghero, where the traditional language is at risk due to changes in social structure. Why Languages and Contacts?

Preliminaries The concept and terminology of “languages in contact” developed by various structuralist schools since Weinreich's time is undoubtedly a great advance over the neogrammarian viewpoint of the traditional comparative linguistics. As for the neogrammarians, they considered the phenomena of mutual influence between languages to be a sort of “dustbin”, where exceptions and complications, impossible to be explained by internal laws of historical development of genetic language trees were to be laid off. That is why the generation of Weinreich has proposed to analyse this field in the light of two (or more) contacting language structures. Yet, this very term and concept of “contact linguistics” – though formulated in opposition to the traditional language trees of the comparativist past – was itself coined under the symbolic influence of the comparativist terminology and concepts. Whereas the neogrammarians were influenced by analogies with trees and branches of Darwin’s biology and Linné’s botany, the concept of languages in contact was also under the influence of figurative thinking, that of the science of man, antropology. In fact, while the neogrammarians presented languages in the light of their analogies with plants and animals, the early structuralist and even post-structuralist approach since Weinreich’s and Haugen’s time presented languages as human individuals in contact. Hence, though critically opposing the neogrammarians’ analogies, this approach built its own theoretical position under the unnoticed, but heavy influence of the same type of methodical parallels rooted in the figurative thinking of another discipline. 2. -

ABSTRACT From 1890-1914, Argentina received a large influx of Italian immigrants who wanted to “hacer la América”, or live the American dream of economic prosperity. With Italian immigrants representing nearly half of all immigrants entering Argentina, the government strived to create a new sense of Argentine pride and nationalism. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate and analyze the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires, Argentina, applying Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social space and linguistic markets, and contact language theories to explain the attrition and shift of the Italian language. This study identifies three relevant social spaces that contributed to the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires: 1). conventillos or immigrant housing 2.) school community, and 3.) mutual aid societies. Within each social space thrived a linguistic market which language played a key role in the way people interacted and identified with each other. First, the conventillos were part of an alternative linguistic market in which cocoliche, a transitional language, thrived as a way for Italians to communicate with immigrants from different countries. -

Index Terms— idiom, translation, strategy, principle I. DEFINITIONS OF IDIOMS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS Idiom is a language in the formation of the unique and fixed expressions in the using process. As a language form, idioms has its own characteristic and patterns and used in high frequency whether in written language or oral language because idioms can convey a host of language and cultural information when people chat to each other. In some senses, idioms are the reflection of the environment, life, historical culture of the native speakers and are closely associated with their inner most spirit and feelings. They are commonly used in all types of languages, informal and formal. That is why the extent to which a person familiarizes himself with idioms is a mark of his or her command of language. Both English and Chinese are abundant in idioms.
