A high offi cial living in the late eleventh century, Skylitzes used a number of existing Greek histories (some of them no longer extant) to create a digest of the previous three centuries. It is with- out question the major historical source for the period, cited con- stantly in modern scholarship, and has never before been available in English. Th is edition features introductions by Jean-Claude Cheynet and Bernard Flusin, along with extensive notes by Cheynet. Sorochan Byzantine Spices as a Daily Byzantine Cuisine Part picery, preservatives and seasonings were widely used in the daily cuisine of Byzantine Empire, succeeded the traditions of ancient Greece and Rome. They were in the list of the main components of the diet of a Middle Byzantium. But due to change of territorial boundaries, contact with new peoples and development of intercon- tinental trade service the assortment of Roman τὰ ἀρώματα (τὸ ἄρωμα — aromatic herb, spice), and the forms of their use have been rather changed. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the range of this goods, direction and terminal points of its import-export trade movements, to find out the issue on professional specialization of trade in spicery, which were ap- preciated and really valuable. At that the spices popularity had not been decreased as they were in the same demand as the preservatives for their special ability to inhibit bacteria (bactericidal action), mainly putrefaction bacteria, and so to promote continued preservation of food. Byzantine historiography of the issue is rather narrow. Usually the researches study spe- cies in the context of Byzantine Empire’s cuisine or perfumery (Ph. Koukoules, M. Grünbart, J. Koder, A. Dalby and especially I. Anagnostakis), or less — Roman trade (J. Irmscher, A. Laiou, N. Oikonomides, С. Morrisson). The works of M. Montanari relate more to me- dieval Italy and Western Europe culinary tradition, but also contain some references to Byz- antium in context of trade relationship [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. BYZANTINE CAMEOS AND THE AESTHETICS OF THE ICON by James A. Magruder, III All rights reserved Abstract Byzantine icons have attracted artists and art historians to what they saw as the flat style of large painted panels. They tend to understand this flatness as a repudiation of the Classical priority to represent Nature and an affirmation of otherworldly spirituality. However, many extant sacred portraits from the Byzantine period were executed in relief in precious materials, such as gemstones, ivory or gold. Byzantine writers describe contemporary icons as lifelike, sometimes even coming to life with divine power. The question is what Byzantine Christians hoped to represent by crafting small icons in precious materials, specifically cameos. The dissertation catalogs and analyzes Byzantine cameos from the end of Iconoclasm (843) until the fall of Constantinople (1453). They have not received comprehensive treatment before, but since they represent saints in iconic poses, they provide a good corpus of icons comparable to icons in other media. Their durability and the difficulty of reworking them also makes them a particularly faithful record of Byzantine priorities regarding the icon as a genre. In addition, the dissertation surveys theological texts that comment on or illustrate stone to understand what role the materiality of Byzantine cameos played in choosing stone relief for icons. Finally, it examines Byzantine epigrams written about or for icons to define the terms that shaped icon production. -

In the years of John III Vatatzes (1222-1254), he was in disgrace, while when Theodore II Laskaris assumed the throne (1254-1958), he was recalled along with the rest of his relatives. He became an important trusty counselor of the emperor and was honoured by him with the notable title of protosebastos. He was not a successful fighter in the battlefield, though. After Theodore II died in 1258, he did not support the election of Michael Palaiologos as the regent of John IV Laskaris and, as a result, was exiled in Prousa. Βiography Manuel Laskaris was the youngest brother of the emperor of Nicaea Theodore I Komnenos Laskaris, and the last of all six Laskaris brothers. The Laskaris brothers from the eldest to the younger were: Isaac, Alexios, Theodore (I Komnenos Laskaris, emperor in the exile of Nicaea), Constantine (XI Laskaris, uncrowned Byzantine emperor), Michael and Manuel.1 The activity of Michael Laskaris is also mentioned by George Akropolites, Theodore Skoutariotes and George Pachymeres, who calls him ‘Tzamanturos’( Tζαμάντουρος).2 There is information about his life and work until Michael VIII assumed the throne; Michael Laskaris must have died in exile in Prousa. -
Byzantine Gastronomy
Byzantine Gastronomy Byzantine cuisine synthesized dishes from ancient Greece and the Roman Empire with new ingredients and many innovations. The Empress Theodora ( ca. A.D. 500 – 548) invited cooks from different parts of mainland Greece and the islands to cook for her. As the capital of a powerful and rich empire, Constantinople, a bustling city of as many as 1,000,000 inhabitants at its height during the Macedonian dynasty of the late 9th-early 11th centuries, was the center of the domestic and foreign trade of Byzantium. Grain, wine, salt, meat, cheese, vegetables and fruits flowed from the provinces into its markets. The capital was also the centre of luxury trade: exotic spices and lavish foods (such as black caviar) were popular imports for the wealthy land owners, the officials of the State and Church and the rich members of the new middle class, the “mesoi”, who could afford them. Beans were a common source of protein for the peasants, the poor and the monks during fasting. The variety of vegetables, fruits and condiments-black pepper, honey, olive oil, vinegar, salt, mushrooms, celery, leeks, lettuce, chicory, spinach, turnips, eggplant, cabbage, white beets, almonds, pomegranates, nuts, apples, lentils, raisins etc. which were listed as food of the poor by Ptohoprodromos (Poems-1150), mirrors both the interest in good eating and the availability of healthy ingredients regardless of economic class. Tomato and potato were not part of the Byzantine diet, as they were introduced to the area many years later. Bread played a very important role in the Byzantine diet, so much so that the guild of bakers of Constantinople and their animals were never used by the state in order that bread baking could not be interrupted (Book of the Eparch, 911-912). -

School of Humanities Classics and Ancient History 2004 ii iii Abstract A summary of what a historical commentary should aim to do is provided by Gomme and Walbank in the introductions to their famous and magisterial commentaries on Thoukydidēs and Polybios. From Gomme: A historical commentary on an historian must necessarily derive from two sources, a proper understanding of his own words, and what we can learn from other authorities . To see what gaps there are in his narrative [and to] examine the means of filling these gaps. (A. Gomme A Historical Commentary on Thucydides vol. 1 (London, 1959) 1) And from Walbank: I have tried to give full references to other relevant ancient authorities, and where the text raises problems, to define these, even if they could not always be solved. Primarily my concern has been with whatever might help elucidate what Polybius thought and said, and only secondarily with the language in which he said it, and the question whether others subsequently said something identical or similar. Walbank A Historical Commentary on Polybius vol. 1 (London, 1957) vii) Both scholars go on to stress the need for the commentator to stick with the points raised by the text and to avoid the temptation to turn the commentary into a rival narrative. These are the principles which I have endeavoured to follow in my Historical Commentary on Books One and Two of Pachymerēs’ Historia. -

MEDICINA NEI SECOLI ARTE E SCIENZA, 30/2 (2018) 579-616 Journal of History of Medicine Articoli/Articles MALABATHRON (ΜΑΛΑΒΑΘΡΟΝ) IN ANCIENT AND EARLY BYZANTINE MEDICINE AND CUISINE MACIEJ KOKOSZKO ZOFIA RZEŹNICKA Department of Byzantine History, University of Łódź, Łódź, PL The Waldemar Ceran Research Centre for the History and Culture of the Mediterranean Area and South-East Europe Ceraneum, University of Łódź, Łódź, PL SUMMARY This study of the history and applications of μαλάβαθρον (malábathron), known as tejpat, suggests that the spice had an appreciable effect on Mediterranean medicine and cuisine. A significant increase in the interest in the plant occurred in the 1st c. BC, though extant information on the dietetic-pharmacological uses of tejpat dates only to the 1st c. AD, and appears in Dioscorides’ De materia medica. Malábathron never became a common medicament, nor a cheap culinary ingredient. Nevertheless, it was regularly used in medical practice, but only in remedies prescribed to the upper social classes. In Roman cuisine it was also an ingredient of sophisticated dishes. In De re coquinaria it features in twelve preparations. Sources Any research into the role of μαλάβαθρον (malábathron – tejpat in English) in antiquity and the early Middle Ages has to be based on a wide range of sources. Suicide in Byzantium
EÏÏËÓÈο 57.1 (2007) SUICIDE IN BYZANTIUM The evidence of the sources on suicide from the 4th to the 15th century in Byzantium is rather limited and the scarcity of information explains why the subject has not been investigated, save for the motif of taking one’s own life in the Greek Novel from Antiquity to the Comnenian period.1 In the Judaic and Christian traditions suicide was condemned as an act of impiety towards God who created man. The issue had been debated to some extent among the Greek thinkers because self-inflicted death was not regarded as «in accordance with nature». The Stoics supported some kinds of suicide (when the body becomes a burden to the soul, for instance), and the Platonic passage in Phaedo caused some ambiguity as to its final message with regard to Socrates’ death, his closing words in particular that man is ethically bound to preserve his life. The Romans also were thought by and large to accept suicide. During the Christian persecutions some of the martyrs – devote women and virgins – chose self-destruction to escape rape, defilement and humiliation. Such incidents were known to Eusebius of Caesarea for he mentions women martyrs leaping from high places to their death, or drowning in a river or in the sea. In the face of dishonour and violation by pagans, self-destruction was preferred and was even praised. Ioannes Chryso- stomos dedicated a homily to the three martyrs Bernike, Prosdoke, and Domnine, who chose to drown themselves in a river in the city of Hierapolis rather than to be humiliated (PG 50, 629-640).
