The NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment
The NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment The Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) program measures performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress in 27 urban school districts. The TUDA data allow for comparisons among participating districts and analyses of trends for districts which have participated over time. With the goal of improving student achievement, the TUDA program focuses attention on the specific challenges and accomplishments associated with urban education. Funded by Congress in 2002, at the request of the Council of the Great City Schools, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Assessment Governing Board, the TUDA program has collected and reported student achievement data for select large urban districts every other year since 2003. When the program started, six districts participated. As of 2019, the number of urban districts voluntarily participating has grown to 27. Participating districts can monitor their progress on NAEP over time in comparison to one another, to the national public results, and to results from large cities nationwide. Districts also can examine and compare information about their students’ learning experiences in and out of the classroom, which is collected via NAEP survey questionnaires. These comparisons allow TUDA districts to learn from one another about best practices for improving student outcomes. 2019 NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment The 2019 NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment provides district-level results in reading and mathematics for the participating 27 urban school districts in grades 4 and 8. Six TUDA districts joined the program in 2017, so, for them, the 2019 NAEP TUDA marks the first time they can see trends over time. -

Ottoman history is not only the field of my research. It became a passion. I am indebted to Prof. Dr. Jan Dumolyn, my supervisor, who has given me the opportunity to take on this extremely interesting journey. And not only that. He has also given me moral support and methodological guidance throughout the whole process. The frequent meetings to discuss the thesis were at times somewhat like a wrestling match, but they have always been inspiring and stimulating. I also want to thank Prof. Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi and Prof. Dr. Jo Vansteenbergen, for their expert suggestions. My colleagues of the History Department have also been supportive by letting me share my ideas in development during research meetings at the department, lunches and visits to the pub. I would also like to sincerely thank the scholars who shared their ideas and expertise with me: Dimitris Kastritsis, Feridun Emecen, David Wrisley, Güneş Işıksel, Deborah Boucayannis, Kadir Dede, Kristof d’Hulster, Xavier Baecke and many others. -
'Sinopsis Historiarum' of John Scylitze Declares the Stances of Byzantine
The ‘Sinopsis Historiarum’ of John Scylitze declares the stances of Byzantine hoplomachia of the 11th century By George E.Georgas , fencing coach and historical fencing instructor With this article I have to introduce our new member of the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’ as historical researcher, Mr. Foteinos Staveris who is student of archeology at the University of History and Archeology of Ioannina. I have to thank the Byzantine and Ecclesiastical Museum of Kefallinia for sharing to our Academy the copy of Scylitze ‘s book of 11th century ‘Sinopsis Historiarum’ for the purpose of studding. The Greek version of this essay added at the archives of the Byzantine and Ecclesiastical Museum of Kefallinia. John Scylitze was a Greek historian of the 11th century. He has the title of kouropalates of the imperial palace. This title was one of the highest from the time of Justinian the Great until the Komninian dynasty. The title means he who is in charge in the imperial palace. Also Scylitze was former Magnus Droungarios of the Vigla. Droungarios was a military rank of late Roman and Byzantine Empire and signifying the commander of the Droungos formation. The Droungarios of the Vigla or The Droungarios of the Watch, means the commander of the elite Vigla regiment. The Vigla regiment was responsible for guarding the emperor’s campaign. So as we understand except of politician and historian, Scylitze was also a man trained in weapons of his age. The cover of ‘Sinopsis Historiarum’ of John Scylitze He wrote the ‘Sinopsis Historiarum’ which cover the reigns of Byzantine emperors from 811 until 1057. -

The Migration of Syrian and Palestinian Populations in the 7Th Century: Movement of Individuals and Groups in the Mediterranean
Chapter 10 The Migration of Syrian and Palestinian Populations in the 7th Century: Movement of Individuals and Groups in the Mediterranean Panagiotis Theodoropoulos In 602, the Byzantine emperor Maurice was dethroned and executed in a mili- tary coup, leading to the takeover of Phokas. In response to that, the Sasanian Great King Khosrow ii (590–628), who had been helped by Maurice in 591 to regain his throne from the usurper Bahram, launched a war of retribution against Byzantium. In 604 taking advantage of the revolt of the patrikios Nars- es against Phokas, he captured the city of Dara. By 609, the Persians had com- pleted the conquest of Byzantine Mesopotamia with the capitulation of Edes- sa.1 A year earlier, in 608, the Exarch of Carthage Herakleios the Elder rose in revolt against Phokas. His nephew Niketas campaigned against Egypt while his son, also named Herakleios, led a fleet against Constantinople. Herakleios managed to enter the city and kill Phokas. He was crowned emperor on Octo- ber 5, 610.2 Ironically, three days later on October 8, 610, Antioch, the greatest city of the Orient, surrendered to the Persians who took full advantage of the Byzantine civil strife.3 A week later Apameia, another great city in North Syria, came to terms with the Persians. Emesa fell in 611. Despite two Byzantine counter at- tacks, one led by Niketas in 611 and another led by Herakleios himself in 613, the Persian advance seemed unstoppable. Damascus surrendered in 613 and a year later Caesarea and all other coastal towns of Palestine fell as well. -
