Specifically, my central research question asked: what resources are mobilised in constructing the subjectivities of male theatrical dancers? The primary means for addressing this question was a series of interviews with Australian men who are or have been employed as professional ballet or contemporary dancers. By way of background to these data, I considered the different ways in which male theatrical dancers have been discursively produced over the last 300 years or so in both scholarly and popular literature. In addition, 1 present a case study of Robert Helpmann, Australia's first international ballet star. By examining recorded interviews with Helpmann and the considerable newspaper, magazine and biographical literature which accompanied his life, I argue that existing discursive 'explanations' of the male dancer scarcely begin to reflect the complex interplay of aesthetics, gender and sexuality which seem to have constituted Helpmann the man and Helpmann the artist. This complexity is also a distinguishing feature of the analysis of the interview data that I present. In particular, I suggest that while there is clearly no male dancer 'type', the ways in which male dancers constitute themselves and the reasons they give for being dancers can be understood as part of what Foucault called the 'art of the self. That is, their subjectivities are constellations of particular discursive resources and bodily memories which come together to form context specific personal styles. However, these styles are not simply a matter of 'taste'; they reflect the dividends of social power which accrue to particular kinds of men within Australian society, as well as, in some cases, indicating sites of resistance towards dominant notions of masculinity. 1 Acknowledgments The work towards this thesis was generously supported by a Charles Sturt University Faculty of Education seed grant. Ekstrand ii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor This study examines female software developers as knowledge laborers with a special emphasis on free and open source software (FOSS) development. In examining female developers as knowledge laborers, this study focuses on both labor and knowledge. Women’s low participation in FOSS development is not an issue of recent years, but a consequence of women’s overall status in the computing field over the last three decades. In order to explicate women’s low participation in FOSS development, a broader historical and economic analysis is needed. Thus, this study explores the historical context of computer science education and industry in the 1980s since this is when the groundwork for FOSS development was laid. Furthermore, the power of cultural discourses that maintain and reinforce the gendered construction of FOSS development is discussed to unpack how the gendered construction is interrelated with the labor relations in the knowledge industry. In addition to the labor relations in FOSS development, this study attends to the knowledge produced by FOSS development. Knowledge gains importance as a sum of values of the knowledge producers. Source codes written by software developers turn into products that engage users with certain utility.

It is a result of the collaboration between Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Institute of Music and Dance, Lublin Centre of Culture, Lublin Dance Theatre and Art Stations Foundations The precursors of the Polish dance avant-garde were women – icons of dance history, promoters of modern ideas, thoughts, and techniques. The aim of the project ‘Choreographic territories – New Avant-garde Routes’ is to recall the profiles of these outstanding twentieth-century dance avant-garde artists of Polish origin: Pola Nireńska, Bronisława Niżyńska, Marie Rambert and Yanka Rudzka. As in the 1920s and 1930s, nowadays Polish artists can inspire a modern understanding of choreography in other countries as well. We wish to return to the model of intercultural exchange based on actual collaboration with local communities, emphasizing the strong presence of choreographers and dancers, both today and in the history of Polish dance in general1..
