Steering Column by Ron Salen

I will continue with my discussion of the chapter By-Laws from the March issue of the Commander. Article III. The Board of Directors is elected by the plurality vote of the members qualified and voting at the annual membership meeting. The nominal term of office of each shall be two years, beginning at the close of the business meeting in which elections are conducted. Nominations shall be selected by a Nominating Committee comprised of the Vice-President, Secretary and Treasure of the Executive Board. Nominations shall also be accepted from the floor at the Annual Membership meeting. Nominees need not be present if prior written consent is obtained. The Board of Directors shall consist of six elected and one appointed officers. The elected officers shall be: Chapter President, Vice President, Membership Director, Activities Director, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Editor shall be ap- pointed by the Chapter President and shall be the ex-officio member of the board. Article IV. Deals with the duties of the Chapter Officers The Chapter President shall preside at all meetings. He/she shall appoint assistants to other officers from either the Board or the general membership special ad hoc committees and appointed positions. He/she shall have the power to decide all questions of equal division as well as the powers usually vested in the top administrative office, including but not limited to National club liaison and inter-chapter relations. Vice-President shall preside in the absence of the President. Secretary shall record the minutes of the Board and membership meetings. He/she shall answer and redirect general correspondence and maintain other files of the Chapter President. Treasure shall collect and disburse funds of the chapter, maintain financial records and render an annual report at the membership meeting and whenever the board may require. Membership Director shall have the duty of seeking new members and ascertaining the qualifications of such new members. He/she shall accomplish the annual mailing of the membership renewal notices to current members. He/she shall be responsible for maintaining current membership lists and shall have primary responsibility for the preparation of an annual membership roster. Activities Director shall plan suitable meets and activities for the Chapter, and shall arrange for a schedule of activities to be placed in the Chapter publication so that adequate notice is given to the membership. He/she shall further serve as Marshal in all judging contests sponsored by the Chapter, being in charge of judging, awards, and judging criteria. Editor shall be responsible for the editing and publishing the official publication of the Chapter. He/she shall accom- plish the mailing of this and other publications provided to Chapter members on a regular basis, including the member- ship roster. Board of Directors Meetings shall be held at least bimonthly. Special meetings of the Board may be called by a majority of the Board, or by the President, on adequate notice to the other Board members. This is an area we are lacking in. Because Board meeting are open to all members most of us do not have room to accommodate large groups we have not been holding Board meetings. I would suggest that all meetings that we regularly have other than the December meeting be called board meetings. This would yield three and hope we could work in the others. Vacancies on the Board shall be filled by the Board at its next regular meeting. Order of business shall be conducted according to Robert’s Rules of Order, Revised provided they are applicable and do not conflict with these By-Laws or those of SDC Inc. Article V pertains to our policy which states that the Administration of Potomac Chapter will conform to the provisions of the By-Laws of SDC Inc, which take precedence in the event of any conflict; and the officers of the chapter will abide by the decisions of the board of SDC Inc. The Chapter assumes all responsibility, financial and otherwise, for any activities it conducts. Any applications or dues received by the Chapter for SDC Inc will be promptly forwarded. Article VI provides that these By-Laws can be amended by a majority vote of the qualified voting members of the Chap- ter with the approval of the Directors of SDC Inc. I hope this helps you to understand the workings of your club.

7 Another month - another little Studebaker

Comes now from Automodello, a nice-looking little Avanti. Au- tomodello isn't the oldest house in this business but they do nice things. Like most of these outfits, their products are now made in China, but overlook that.

Their new 1:43 Avanti, a 1963 version with round headlights and no air intake on the hood tunnel, comes in a display case with a brief history on the back wall instead of the more customary mir- ror. All the details are there down to the earmuff medallions, the colors are accurate, and they've even put the optional lock on the gas-filler door.

The thing has been offered in four versions:

AM43-STU-AVA-GM, Avanti Gold AM43-STU-AVA-RD, Avanti Red AM43-STU-AVA-TE, Avanti Turquoise AM43-STU-AVA-HE, black

The gold and red jobs are the most reasonably priced; the turquoise version is the "tribute edition" and is hand num- bered, so it's more; and the black is the "homage edition," whatever that is, and it's REALLY more. They plan to make 499 of the gold and red jobs, 50 in turquoise, and 24 in black. At the price, that's probably a good guess for sales of the black version. Black, you may recall, was available originally on the 1:1 Avantis but was dropped be- cause that color shows every little imperfection; it was later reinstituted at extra cost for the hand finishing required prior to painting.

1963 BY AUTOMODELLO IN 1:43, stock numbers above, fold or red $119.95, turquoise $150.00, black $235.00; all prices dealer recommendations from the manufacturer. Nearby dealers include JM Model- autos, (814) 474-5697 (PA) and Harrell's, (856) 435-6239 (NJ)
