Introduction: The Middleboro Gazette Index, 1915 - 1919 is a guide to the information contained within the Middleboro Gazette during the period January 1915 through December 1919. The information is as it appears in the newspaper and no attempt has been made to verify that the information given in the newspaper is accurate. The focus of the index is on the communities of Middleboro and Lakeville, Massachusetts, with some exceptions. News from outside these geographic areas is included only if there is a direct link to these towns, i.e., Countess and Primo Count Magri. And, beginning with this installment of the index, all references to the military service of individuals from towns reporting news in the Gazette will also be included. Special notations are used within the index to designate, letters (l), tables (t), photographs (p) and illustrations (i). Authors of letters are cited either within the headline or in parentheses immediately following (l). The often informal nature of reporting presents special challenges to researchers. Additional information about specific businesses, town departments or other concerns can be located under general headines, i.e., Railroads, Streets, etc. Names are a particular challenge in a compilation of this kind. Multiple spellings, misspellings and incomplete names are just a few of the hurdles that must be overcome in order to glean every bit of information contained within the pages of the Gazette. For example, DeMoranville may also be spelled De Moranville, Demoranville, DeMaranville, De Maranville, Demaranville, or simply Moranville. Be sure and check under Pratt (Mr) and Pratt (Mrs) as given names are sometimes omitted. In addition, married women were also frequently cited as Mrs. Albert Deane or simply Mrs. Deane. It is advantageous for the researcher to take a broad view when conducting research on individuals. Please remember that during the interval 1915 – 1919 the pages of the Middleboro Gazette were still unnumbered. Page numbers assigned in the index reflect the order in which the pages appear on the microfilm. It is my hope that Index to the Middleboro Gazette Index, 1910 - 1914 will provide a lasting resource for people researching the history of Middleboro and Lakeville, Massachusetts.
