'The organization placEld in charge of this lot was named the Philosophic 1Literary 1Society. Durin.g the two decades of its existence the ·s ociety has been faithful to its charge and has never been any better equiprped fo r its res•ponsible work than at the present time. 'With its present workers the .future indeed looks bright. At the head of this gar1dien lot has recently 'been pilanted a sturdy chestnut with a "Wright sup,port," a faithful Gardner nourishes and refreshes the IJ.)lants Wit!h ,spicy and juicy hits; and a ·cunn•ing little Bird cheers and encourages the workers on their way when things look dull and gloomy. Its cheerful song restores ,all to the proper order again, when by mistake or because of excess energy they go beyond their limits. Among the other members of this society we are fortunate in possessing a Weaver and a 'Barlber. These, rtogether with their faith­ ful helpmates of the society, are ,quite capable of sustaining this garden lot and the future is in1dieed promising. This is a jolly bunch of workers and many are the happy hours is no doubt but t1hat they shall ·s·ay of the'ir work and associations they have spent together.     January 1914 The Mifflinburg Telegraph newspapers of January 2 and January 9, 1914 were full of local, as well as national and international news. In the county The Union County Anti-Saloon League Delegate Convention held a meeting for delegates from the churches of Union County at the Presbyterian Church of Lewisburg on Tuesday, January 13, 1914. “The sense of the moral imperative should come upon the churches of Union County to use their power to eliminate the saloon and to send a man to the next Legislature true to the interests of Home Rule on the Liquor question.” Each church was entitled to send the pastor and two delegates. “Men, as delegates, should be sent, if practicable.” The organizers were I.P. Patch, W.M. Rearick and Bromley Smith. [The Anti-Saloon League coordinated the rural Protestant movement against alcohol. Prohibition, the ban on the sale, production, importation and transportation of alcoholic beverages was in place in the US from 1920 to 1933.] Weddings The White Deer valley saw two weddings at residents' homes in early January 1914.
