CCC CHRISTMAS CABARET 2020 5 PROGRAM NOTE

It has been a difficult year for everyone. At CCC, our holiday concert has tended in recent years toward programs that explore an inherent duality in a season so full of joy and warmth, but with ever shortening days and colder weather.

This year, we decided to do something different.

This year, we present to you our holiday favorites. The full choir from its virtual space, CCC from years past (including several audience sing-alongs from 2007), and individual and small group performances all come together for a joyful holiday celebration.

We wish you all a joyful holiday, good health, and a happy new year!

Carols with a Snowflake icon are sing-alongs! Join in!

01 02 First Snow Jesus Christ the Apple Tree Bo Holden Elizabeth Poston

You lucid, lustrous, tender snow, The tree of life my soul hath seen, who paint the landscape all one shade, Laden with fruit, and always green: the living, dead, ugly, fair, The trees of nature fruitless be you colour all things equal – white. Compared with Christ the apple tree.

You fled your mother’s warm arms, His beauty doth all things excel: into the air as blue mist: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell turned home again one blizzard night, The glory which I now can see so pure, but grim and cold. In Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought: Stephan G. Stephansson (1853–1927) trans. Kristjana Gunnars (© Red Deer College Press Ltd) I missed of all; but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree.

I’m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree.

This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.

Words from ‘Divine Hymns or Spiritual Songs’, 1784

8 CHICAGO CHAMBER CHOIR 03 The First Noel *Sing-Along

The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Refrain: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. [Refrain]

Then entered in those Wise Men three, full reverently upon the knee, and offered there, in his presence, their gold and myrrh and frankincense. [Refrain]

CCC CHRISTMAS CABARET 2020 9 We been gone for such a long time that I’m almost afraid to go home 04 A long road is a long, dragged-out imagination where things can go wrong But we keep rolling on

Dusty Trails I know I’m no doctor but if I was guessing I’d say it was just growing pains Lucius And painful as growing is we can’t forget it’s our ticket to taking the reins And we’ll all be okay, we’ll be okay

Dusty trails can lead you to a golden road, I’ve been told Can’t remember who it was but all she spoke Will a penny for her thoughts leave me broke? ‘Cause everyone’s around and I’m still alone Everyone’s around right now and I’m still alone

It’s all in the manual that we’ve been writing, a future instructional guide If we skip to add to our prefufilled dreams, we’d be lost without our own advice We’ll be alright, we’ll be alright

Dusty trails can lead you to a golden road, I’ve been told Can’t remember who it was but all he spoke Will a penny for his thoughts leave me broke? ‘Cause everyone’s around and I’m still alone Everyone’s around right now and I’m still alone

I’m halfway to misery Some say when you go halfway there’s still plenty of time to return Oh, am I halfway to heaven? Some may say when you go halfway, you only have halfway to go

Dusty trails can lead you to a golden road, I’ve been told Can’t remember who it was but all he spoke Will a penny for his thoughts leave me broke? ‘Cause everyone’s around and I’m still alone Everyone’s around right now and I’m still alone

16 CHICAGO CHAMBER CHOIR 13 In the bleak mid-winter

In the bleak mid-winter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed 14 The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, Let It Snow Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels fall before, Oh the weather outside is frightful The ox and ass and camel which adore. But the fire is so delightful What can I give Him, poor as I am? And since we’ve no place to go If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; It doesn’t show signs of stopping Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. And I’ve bought some corn for popping The lights are turned way down low

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Christina Rossetti When we finally kiss good night How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight All the way home I’ll be warm

The fire is slowly dying And, my dear, we’re still goodbying But as long as you love me so Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
