Since 1980, Julian Ackerley has served as Director of the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus. He has achieved acclaim as an accomplished conductor and administrator and has taken the choristers on performance tours spanning five continents and over 25 countries.
Dr. Ackerley served as the National Boychoir Repertoire and Standards Chair for the American Choral Directors Association and is a specialist in working with boys emerging voices. He was also selected Choral Director of the Year by the ACDA Arizona Chapter. An experienced teacher, Ackerley has taught music at all levels from elementary to university students.
Dr. Ackerley received his doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Arizona with emphasis in music education, vocal performance and choral conducting. He is a frequent guest conductor and clinician. Through the years his choirs have received numerous prestigious invitations to appear in regional, national and Julian Ackerley international events, conferences and festivals. Just recently the Director Chorus was featured a second consecutive year for the National Christmas Tree Lighting.
Anne Grimes is delighted to work with the talented singers of TABC. She is a musician, music teacher, and music director in the Tucson area, currently teaching vocal and instrumental music at Santa Rita High School, serving as music director for Desert Springs PCA Church, and teaching voice at Pima College.
Her experience in musical theater is vast: playing piano for 30 Gaslight Theater productions, music directing for Arts Express and CYT, and playing piano for many musical and theater groups. Anne's education is exclusively from UA, including a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance and music education, and a Master's and Doctorate (ABD) in Choral Conducting. Her plan is to fully complete the doctorate degree by the end of this year!
She enjoyed playing piano for TABC on their 2018 China tour, and is looking forward to more tours. Anne and her husband Jonathan have
four grown children of whom they are very proud: Sarah (and Anne Grimes Stephen) Lewis, Caleb, Seth, and Josiah Grimes. Accompanist
Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus Mission The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus is dedicated to providing boys in the community an enriched educational experience through the study and performance of choral music. The Chorus endeavors to impart musical, social and leadership skills that build self-esteem and have a sustaining impact on its members. Representing and serving the community as an artistic and cultural resource are fundamental to the Chorus mission.
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus has successfully faced the challenges of 2020. As the longest continually operating independent boychoir in the United States, the Chorus is offering its programs in innovative and safe ways to fulfill its mission of music education and character development while contributing to the arts and culture of Tucson.
The resiliency and adaptability of the Chorus has never been more apparent. After providing music education remotely in the spring, we found new ways to engage families and interact with choristers during the summer. This fall we have protocols in place to rehearse and perform safely together. Given the cancellation of traditional public performances at this time, the Chorus shifted its work to recordings both audio and video. The Chorus also received the distinct honor of being asked to perform for a second consecutive year at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.
We would like to thank our families and our friends in the community for maintaining their engagement with the Chorus and their support of its mission during this unusual time. Music has a positive impact on all but can be especially powerful in shaping the lives of children. Your trust in this work is critical to our success. Thank you for helping us provide Endless Opportunities for boys and young men both now and in the future.
