MONTGOMERY --WARD CASE Broadcast by H. H. Humphrey, Jr. W.T.C.N. May 5, 1944. Montgomery Ward 1 s highly controversial quarrel with the admini- stration got a helping hand from Congress today. The House gave overwhelming approval to a resolution authorizing an investigation of the government's seizure of Montgomery Ward's Chicago plant. The legislators approved the investigation by a vote of three hundred to sixty. The House probe will run concurrently with the Senate inves- tigation already underway. Only the staunchest administration supporters opposed the House resolution calling for a seven-man eo~ttee to decide whether the President exceeded bi s a uthority in ordering the seizure. Adminis- tration stalwarts say the seizure was in accordance with provisions of the Smith-Connally Anti-Strike Law. I wish to take the liberty tonight to give an analysis of this extremely interesting episode in war-time controls by cur government. There seems ~ be an unusually great interest in the government's seizure of the Montgomery Ward plant in Chicago. The s]i8ctacle of Mr. Avery, manager of Ward's, being carried from his office by American soldiers is a milestone in the battle between the Company and the Government. Congress, or some members of Congress, is up in arms. The wildest sort of charges have been hurled at President Roosevelt and Attorney General Biddle. There is plenty o:f smoke and heat, but how about the f'acts. What is the 'record behind the government's seizure? What is Mr. Avery's record in industrial relations? After considerable research and investigation, I have found suf- ficient information to be worthy of presentation. -

He has achieved acclaim as an accomplished conductor and administrator and has taken the choristers on performance tours spanning five continents and over 25 countries. Dr. Ackerley served as the National Boychoir Repertoire and Standards Chair for the American Choral Directors Association and is a specialist in working with boys emerging voices. He was also selected Choral Director of the Year by the ACDA Arizona Chapter. An experienced teacher, Ackerley has taught music at all levels from elementary to university students. Dr. Ackerley received his doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Arizona with emphasis in music education, vocal performance and choral conducting. He is a frequent guest conductor and clinician. Through the years his choirs have received numerous prestigious invitations to appear in regional, national and Julian Ackerley international events, conferences and festivals. Just recently the Director Chorus was featured a second consecutive year for the National Christmas Tree Lighting. Anne Grimes is delighted to work with the talented singers of TABC. She is a musician, music teacher, and music director in the Tucson area, currently teaching vocal and instrumental music at Santa Rita High School, serving as music director for Desert Springs PCA Church, and teaching voice at Pima College. Her experience in musical theater is vast: playing piano for 30 Gaslight Theater productions, music directing for Arts Express and CYT, and playing piano for many musical and theater groups. -

Littlejohn Recovering CERCLA Costs from the U.S. Government ince its enactment by Congress in 1980, the Superfund statute has ushered in an era of envi- Sronmental legal warfare between the federal government and companies with cleanup costs that have escalated into the hundreds of millions of dollars.1 In some cases, the result has been the death or near-death of companies throughout America. If your company is paying these costs, then you may want to consider examining your company’s history and the country’s 42 ACCA Docket September 2003 Legacy of history as a strategy for making claims against another potentially responsible party (“PRP”): the U.S. government. He appears regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 as well as for Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Foreign tours have taken him round most of Europe as well as to South Africa, the United States and Canada, Israel and the Far East. His solo recordings with the RPO include Hubert Bath’s Cornish Rhapsody, the Spellbound and Warsaw concertos and da Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Other recordings include Frank Martin’s Ballade for Piano and Orchestra with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Dream of Olwen and other music of Charles Williams with the BBC Concert Orchestra on the Marco Polo label. In lighter vein, he has made contributions to albums by José Carreras (Pure Passion) and Tony Henry (Modern Arias). As organist, he has recorded an extensive list for EMI and Chandos which includes all the major oratorios of Elgar and the award- winning recording of Britten’s War Requiem with the London Photo: Joanna Smith Symphony Orchestra. He has contributed to many film soundtracks including Aliens, Dangerous Liaisons, Shadowlands, Philadelphia and the epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’
Book Notes: Reading in the Time of Coronavirus By Jefferson Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Andrew Roth ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ As we learned in the previous Book Notes, it was Clement Clarke Moore in his 1823 A Visit from St. Nicholas who first named Santa’s reindeer. It may well also have been Moore who gave Santa his reindeer and sleigh, for the Dutch folklore of the Hudson Valley was vague about Sinterklaas and his flying wagon’s power source. Two years before Moore, an anonymous poem, “Old Santeclaus with much delight,” first depicted Santa in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer; yes,a reindeer. There was only one. The poem was published by William Gilley in 1821, but he identified neither an author nor an illustrator. Some sources attribute the poem to Moore, but its simpler, if not cruder, diction and meter suggest an author other than Moore. Regardless of who wrote “Old Santeclaus with much delight,” not only did Moore in “A Visit from St. Nicholas” give Santa eight reindeer, he also named them. As the opening stanza of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which Moore did not write, proclaims, “You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen/Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen …” [1] But Rudolph was nowhere to be seen. Who is Rudolph, “the most famous reindeer of all”? Where did he come from? Who created Rudolph – star of song, theatrical cartoons, comic books, animated television specials, feature-length films, and his own personal U.S. postage stamp? How did he become more famous than his eight older peers? Gene Autry and television helped, but we’re getting ahead of the story.
