He appears regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 as well as for Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Foreign tours have taken him round most of Europe as well as to South Africa, the United States and Canada, Israel and the Far East. His solo recordings with the RPO include Hubert Bath’s Cornish Rhapsody, the Spellbound and Warsaw concertos and da Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Other recordings include Frank Martin’s Ballade for Piano and Orchestra with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Dream of Olwen and other music of Charles Williams with the BBC Concert Orchestra on the Marco Polo label. In lighter vein, he has made contributions to albums by José Carreras (Pure Passion) and Tony Henry (Modern Arias). As organist, he has recorded an extensive list for EMI and Chandos which includes all the major oratorios of Elgar and the award- winning recording of Britten’s War Requiem with the London Photo: Joanna Smith Symphony Orchestra. He has contributed to many film soundtracks including Aliens, Dangerous Liaisons, Shadowlands, Philadelphia and the epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He caused something of a stir in the 2003 Proms when, with friend and colleague Alistair Young, he appeared on live television for the solo piano duet part of Malcolm Arnold’s The Belles of St Trinian’s, dressed in schoolboy uniform, complete with cap and catapult! Roderick Elms is Composer in Association to the Elgar Chamber Orchestra and his compositions, which range in diversity from solo instrumental music to symphonic compositions, are now heard across the UK, the United States and Canada performed by such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Concert, London Philharmonic, English Chamber, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé, Scottish National, Ulster and Toronto Symphony. In addition to his Christmas and festive pieces, his other compositions are regularly broadcast by the BBC and Classic FM and much of his instrumental music has been recorded by the RPO for the Dutton label under the title A Little Fall-ish! This CD includes his popular Concertino for Celeste, Four Seasonal Nocturnes for horn (with Martin Owen as soloist), Cygncopations for cor anglais (with Victoria Walpole) and the Pæan for organ and strings (with organist, Stuart Nicholson). Music for solo piano includes a set of Twelve Astrological Preludes, one for each of the twelve major keys – each prelude alluding to certain character traits traditionally associated with that sign. Other chamber pieces include Burlesca for two horns and piano, and the quirky Funky Fugato for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano. His output also includes choral music for church use and includes the popular anthem The Lord is my Strength and Song, a setting of Psalm 118, and a set of Preces and Responses. Details of his music can be found at www.masterkeyboards.co.uk. 8.570793 8 570793 bk FF 9/18/07 11:22 AM Page 2 1 Fanfare da Festa 1:31 THREE MORE CAROLS Stephen Bell Roderick Elms @ Coventry Carol 3:26 Stephen Bell was born in Bury, Lancashire, and won a place to study conducting 2 O Come, O Come Emmanuel 4:01 15th-century arr. • Broadcasting the Arts: Opera on TV
Broadcasting the Arts: Opera on TV With onstage guests directors Brian Large and Jonathan Miller & former BBC Head of Music & Arts Humphrey Burton on Wednesday 30 April BFI Southbank’s annual Broadcasting the Arts strand will this year examine Opera on TV; featuring the talents of Maria Callas and Lesley Garrett, and titles such as Don Carlo at Covent Garden (BBC, 1985) and The Mikado (Thames/ENO, 1987), this season will show how television helped to democratise this art form, bringing Opera into homes across the UK and in the process increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation. In the past, television has covered opera in essentially four ways: the live and recorded outside broadcast of a pre-existing operatic production; the adaptation of well-known classical opera for remounting in the TV studio or on location; the very rare commission of operas specifically for television; and the immense contribution from a host of arts documentaries about the world of opera production and the operatic stars that are the motor of the industry. Examples of these different approaches which will be screened in the season range from the David Hockney-designed The Magic Flute (Southern TV/Glyndebourne, 1978) and Luchino Visconti’s stage direction of Don Carlo at Covent Garden (BBC, 1985) to Peter Brook’s critically acclaimed filmed version of The Tragedy of Carmen (Alby Films/CH4, 1983), Jonathan Miller’s The Mikado (Thames/ENO, 1987), starring Lesley Garret and Eric Idle, and ENO’s TV studio remounting of Handel’s Julius Caesar with Dame Janet Baker. Documentaries will round out the experience with a focus on the legendary Maria Callas, featuring rare archive material, and an episode of Monitor with John Schlesinger’s look at an Italian Opera Company (BBC, 1958).

The earliest and most complete reference to this deity can be seen in Vedic texts from 1500 BCE. Documentary evidence in rock art, and sixth century BCE Tartessian inscriptions demonstrate that the ancient Celtic world saw this deity of the land as a Horse Queen that ruled the land and granted fertility. Evidence suggests that she could grant sovereignty rights to humans by uniting with them (literally or symbolically), through ingestion, or intercourse. The Horse Queen is represented, or alluded to in such divergent areas as Bronze Age English hill figures, Celtic coinage, Roman horse deities, mediaeval and modern Celtic masked traditions. Even modern Welsh traditions, such as the Mari Lwyd, infer her existence and confirm the value of her symbolism in the modern world. 2 Lyle Tompsen, Student Number 28001102, Masters Dissertation Table of Contents List of definitions: ............................................................................................................ 8 Introduction ..................................................................................................................

  • The Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival
The Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival January 3 & 4, 2015 IN THE CITY OF CINCINNATI The Festival’s roots. Oxford University’s Queens College, The Boar’s Head Tradition Oxford, England. From Medieval Terrors to Modern Magic 1340 - 2015 The Boar’s Head Festival is probably the oldest continuing festival of the Christmas season. When it came to Cincinnati in 1940, it already had a 600-year history. The pageant’s roots go back to medieval times when wild boars were the most dangerous animals in European forests. They were a menace to humans and were hunted as public enemies. Like our Thanksgiving turkey, roasted boar was a staple of medieval banquet tables—symbolizing the triumph of man over ferocious beast. As Christian beliefs overtook pagan customs in Europe, the presentation of a boar’s head at Christmas time came to symbolize the triumph of the Christ Child over the evils of the world. The festival we know today originated at Queen’s College, Oxford, England, in 1340. Legend has it that a scholar was studying a book of Aristotle while walking through the forest on his way to Christmas Mass. Suddenly he was confronted by an angry boar. Having no other weapon, the quick-witted student rammed his metal-bound philosophy book down the throat of the charging animal and the boar choked to death. That night, the beast’s head, finely dressed and garnished, was carried in procession into the dining room accompanied by carolers. By 1607, a similar ceremony was being celebrated at St. John’s College, Cambridge.

Menuhin Competition returns to London in 2016 in celebration of Yehudi Menuhin's Centenary 7-17 April 2016 The Menuhin Competition - the world’s leading competition for violinists under the age of 22 – announces its return to London in 2016 in celebration of Yehudi Menuhin’s centenary. Founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983 and taking place in a different international city every two years, the Competition returns to London in 2016 after first being held there in 2004. The centenary event will take place in partnership with some of the UK’s leading music organisations: the Royal Academy of Music, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Southbank Centre, the Yehudi Menuhin School and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. It will be presented in association with the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Radio 3 which will broadcast the major concerts. Yehudi Menuhin lived much of his life in Britain, and his legacy - not just as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, but as an ambassador for music education - is the focus of all the Competition’s programming. More festival of music and cultural exchange than mere competition, the Menuhin Competition in 2016 will be a rich ten-day programme of concerts, masterclasses, talks and participatory activities with world-class performances from candidates and jury members alike. Competition rounds take place at the Royal Academy of Music, with concerts held at London’s Southbank Centre. 2016 jury members include previous winners who have gone on to become world class soloists: Tasmin Little OBE, Julia Fischer and Ray Chen. Duncan Greenland, Chairman of the Menuhin Competition comments: “We are delighted to be bringing the Competition to London in Menuhin’s centenary year and working with such prestigious partners.

  • December 2020: the Peaceful Transfer of Mumming
Folklife Today December 2020: The Peaceful Transfer of Mumming Announcer: From the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Music: “Breaking Up Christmas” played by Norman Edmonds, Paul Edmonds, and Rufus Quesinberry. JOHN FENN: Welcome to Folklife Today! I’m John Fenn, the head of research and programs at the American Folklife Center, and I’m here with Steve Winick, a folklife specialist at the Center and the creator of the Folklife Today blog. Steve: Hi, everyone! John: We have kind of an unusual episode for December. Every year, in the week or two before Christmas, staff members of the American Folklife Center put our research and performance skills into play, bringing collections to life in a dramatic performance that tours the halls of the Library of Congress. The performance is based on traditional mummers’ plays. And this year, since we can’t actually perform our mummers’ play live, we decided to do it as a podcast episode, sort of like an old-time radio play. We did all the recording remotely over the Web, so sound quality varies. Steve: Right, but we don’t want to throw our audience in at the deep end, so we’re going to say a little about the tradition first. And for that, we’re joined by Jennifer Cutting, another folklife specialist at the American Folklife Center. Hi Jennifer! Jennifer: Hi John! Hi Steve! Hi everybody out there! John: So Jennifer, what are mummer’s plays? Jennifer: Well, “mumming” is an old word for a tradition of getting dressed up in costumes and going from house to house, doing a performance in exchange for food, drink…sometimes money.
