RESOLUTION

LAFD Fire Station 76 & USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76)

WHEREAS, the men and women of Fire Station 76 of the Los Angeles Fire Department salute the crew of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), whose demonstrated professionalism dedication and honorable service are an inspiration to a nation of grateful citizens; and

WHEREAS, because of the protection you provide to all Americans, this allows us the freedom to protect our communities; and

WHEREAS, the honorable accomplishments of your ship's namesake, President Ronald Reagan, who as Governor of on July 14, 1970, signed into law the Wedworth-Townsend Paramedic Act establishing mobile intensive care paramedics as first responders; and ·

WHEREAS, resulting in emergency medical care becoming avai !able to those in need during the first crucial minutes following an accident or the onset of a serious physical condition; and

WHEREAS, as a result of this visionary legislation, countless lives have been saved, and today the Los Angeles Fire Department responds daily to over l, l 00 emergency calls, 85% of which we provide aid to the sick and injured; and

WHEREAS, the men and women of Fire Station 76 of the Los Angeles Fire Department are proud to share the numerical designation with the crew of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76); and

WHEREAS, we stand united in our love of country, love of community, recognizing our shared dedication to duty, pride in professionalism and loyal service to the citizens of the United States of America:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby commends and thanks the crew of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) as well as the men and women of Los Angeles City Fire Station 76 for

AUG1 2 2011 their dedication and service to our nation. We recognize the great sacrifices that each of you make for the American people. Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty to help keep our country safe.

RESOLUTION

1 10 h Anniversary Precious Cheese Italian

WHEREAS, the tenth-annual Precious Cheese Feast of San Gennaro, Los Angeles is a celebration ofitalian culture, art, food and entertainment that features live music, carnival games, street performers, strolling musicians and educational exhibits; and

WHEREAS, The San Gennaro Foundation is a 501 (3)c non-profit created by Jimmy Kimmel and producer Douglas DeLuca, along with some of Los Angeles' most prominent Italian-American citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation's mission is to uphold the principles established by St. Gennaro, patron saint of Naples who worked tirelessly to help people in need. In addition to fundraising, the group seeks to perpetuate cultural identity and solidarity within the Italian American community. All events are intended to embody the attributes of generosity and good will that define the Italian spirit; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation's proceeds from The Feast of San Gennaro Los Angeles benefit the underprivileged children and homeless in Los Angeles as well as to provide entertainment and cultural enrichment to the community through its non-profit, cultural outreach program; and

WHEREAS, aside from establishing the Feast as a local and national destination event, the main objectives for The Feast of San Gennaro this year are to focus on honoring and increasing the visibility ofltalian history and culture in Los Angeles and to raise money for their community outreach programs; and

WHEREAS, 2011 Jimmy Kimmel and will host this years event; and

11 WHEREAS, the Festival will be held from September 23 'ct -25' , 2011 from 11 :OOam to 11 :OOpm located across the street from the and Highland complex, directly behind the Jimmy Kimmel Live Theater:

In Recognition and Support of the Gabrielino Tongva Nation

WHEREAS, the California Legislature enacted Joint Resolution Number 96, Chapter 146 of the Statues of 1994 and stated in part: "Be it...Resolved by the Assembly and Senate of the State of California, Jointly, that the state of California recognizes the Gabrielino as the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin and the continued existence of the Indian community within our state and takes great pride in recognizing the Indian inhabitance of the Los Angeles Basin and the continued existence of the Indian community within our state"; and

WHEREAS, the state of California based this recognition on the well documented history of the Tribe, which includes indentified archeological sites, Spanish mission records, and federal historical records and documents, including the 1851 U.S delegation headed by one Commissioner Barbour to establish a treaty with the Indians of Los Angeles, and the 1852 observation by the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, E.F. Beale, that numerous Indian populations existed within the County of Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, numerous writers and scholars have noted the existence of the Tribe, including Hugo Reid, who married a Gabrielino Tomyaar known as Victoria Comocronbit and authored Indians of Los Angeles County: Hugo Reid's Letters of 1852; A.L. Kroeber, the noted anthropologist and author of the Handbook of the Indians of California published in 1925; early 20th century field anthropologists C. Hart Merriam and J.P. Harrington, who both noted that there were members of the Tribe living at the Tejon Reservation; W.W Robinson, author of The Indians of Los Angeles: Story of the Liquidation of a People (1952), Berenece Johnson, California's Gabrielino Indians (1962); and the author Helen Hunt Jackson in her classic tale of early California entitled Ramona; and

WHEREAS, such institutions of higher learning as Loyola Marymount University, with over 500 publications regarding the Gabrielino Tongva Tribe in its special collections library, and Claremont College which among other scholarly endeavors completed a study in 2006 entitled "The Gabrielino People" documenting the Tribe's culture, religion and its way of life in the Los Angeles basin, have led to a greater understanding of the history of the Tribe and a recognition of its impacts upon modern day Los Angeles and have led to the recognition of places of special import to the Tribe, including "Tongva Springs" on the University High School campus in West Los Angeles, which is a registered State Historical Site, Gabrielino village sites at the Sheldon Reservoir in Pasadena, at Cal State Long Beach , the City of San Dimas; and the re-creation of a Tongva Village by the City of Santa Fe Springs in a public park acknowledging the existence of the Gabrielino Tongva, and many others; and

WHEREAS, both Mission San Gabriel and Mission San Fernando, two Franciscan missions located in the Los Angeles basin, were built and maintained by Gabrielino Tongva Indians , many of whom were forced into labor during the Spanish occupancy of their ancestral lands, an occupation which continued through both the Mexican and American periods;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, As members of the Los Angeles City Council we support the Gabrielino Tongva Nation in their efforts to obtain Federal Recognition from the Department oflnterior's Bureau of Indian Affairs and memorialize the President, the members of the US Congress and United States Government to support the Tribe's request in creating a government to government relationship in furtherance of the Tribe's efforts to seek self-reliance, self-determination, and prosperity of the Gabrielino Tongva Nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles City Council in particular recognizes and acknowledges the Gabrielino Tongva Nation Tribal Council members Sam Dunlap, Chairman; Adam Loya, Vice Chair; Sandonne Goad, Secretary; and Council Members Virginia Carmelo, Edgar Perez, Shirley Machado, Joey Aguirre, Ruben Aguirre and Barbara Pace for their continued leadership and commitment to the Tribe.
