Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores. -

MUSIC / NEW MUSIC By STEPHEN HOLDEN Published: September 8, 2014 LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet) (429 Records) From an enfant terrible, once hailed as a new Bob Dylan, to a wary but not too grumpy older man, Loudon Wainwright III, now 68, has stayed the course for well over four decades, charting his life and times with pungent light verses and biting turns of phrase. As a folk singer-songwriter, he has proved that a sharp sense of humor can make for verses more durable than earnest self-examination. You can’t whine about the aging process but you can confront it and soften it with laughter. And on the best songs in “Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet),” his 23rd studio album, he faces impending decrepitude with a smile on his face, buoyed by Zoloft. “Brand New Dance,” which opens the album, is a frantic rockabilly swinger in which he announces a new dance craze “sweeping the land,” where “First you get out of bed, then you attempt to stand.” There’s a silver lining. “But that senior discount that’s my kind of treat/Cause when I get on the bus, you got to gimme a seat.” As the song continues, the point of view widens to embrace an older person’s cynicism on Election Day: “One of them fools is bound to win/But it’s the same old same old all over again.” Mr. Wainwright’s music hasn’t changed significantly. It varies from good-timey folk to spare folk-blues. If his voice has thinned a bit, he still conveys the jovial intimacy of a born storyteller whose public self- mockery exorcises demons. -

Helena has to face the past she has been running away from, and deal with not just the death of her father during her visit, but the death, ten years earlier, of her best friend, Anastasia. -

THE HISTORY AND MATHEMATICS OF CONVERSIONS BY JAMES D. NICKEL THE METRIC SYSTEM I f you live in the United States of America, you have to work with two systems of measure. These two sys- tems are called (1) British Imperial system of measure and (2) Metric system of measure. In the British sys- Item, with its long and storied history, there are many sub-systems where different bases are used. The pint- gallon system is base 8, the inches-foot system is base 12, the yard-foot system is base 3, the week-day system is base 7, the month-year system is base 12, the yard-mile system is base 1760, and the foot-mile system is base 5280. In contrast, the Metric system of measurement is, like most national currencies, decimalized (base 10). As we have already noted, it was developed in France in the late 18th century.1 Since the 1960s the International System of Units (SI) (Système International d'Unités in French, hence “SI”) has been the internationally recognized standard metric system. Metric units are widely used around the world for personal, commercial and scientific purposes. Of all the nations of the world (Date: early 21st century), only Liberia, Myanmar and the United States have not yet officially adopt- ed the Metric system. Metric units consist of a standard set of prefixes in multiples of 10 that may be used to derive larger and smaller units. Work- ing with these units is as easy as multiply- ing or dividing by 10 (or powers of 10). -

Introduction and Purpose It is apparent from correspondence that the trade would like changes to be made to the legal quantities for sales of intoxicating liquor. These are driven in part by concerns about the continued availability of 1/5 gill spirit measuring instruments (commonly referred to as ‘optics’) and 1/5 gill capacity measures (commonly referred to as ‘thimble’ measures) and also in part by the need to promote sensible drinking and events such as wine tastings and beer festivals. Whether or not any such changes would be supported by consumers is open to debate and so there is a case for undertaking this initial public consultation before any changes are considered. The purposes of this consultation paper are:- to make interested parties aware of a number of proposals put forward by the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading (‘the OFT’) for changes to the legal quantities for sales of intoxicating liquor; to make interested parties aware of the current situation both in the Island and in the UK; and to seek the views of interested parties on the proposals. The questions in bold within the ‘Proposals and Questions’ section are intended to prompt debate and are by no means exhaustive. -
