The interdisciplinary literary analysis draws on the fields of Urban Studies, Gender Studies, and Human Geography to examine the interdependence between these seeming binaries – home and migration – in six works: Honigmann’s Roman von einem Kinde (1986), Eine Liebe aus Nichts (1991), and Damals, dann und danach (1999), and Özdamar’s Das Leben ist eine Karawanswerei (1992), Die Brücke vom Goldenen Horn (1998), and Seltsame Sterne starren zur Erde (2003). The dissertation begins with a discussion of scholarship on Özdamar and Honigmann, and on concepts of home, space, and place, migration, exile, and nomadism. Four central chapters examine each protagonist’s critical engagement with and reinvention of the varied spaces she inhabits. The textual analysis explores physical, social, linguistic, spiritual, and gendered spaces as points of contact between home and migration. It demonstrates the ways in which artistic and literary spaces blur the boundaries between home and away, familiarity and foreignness. In these texts, home and migration emerge not as static concepts, but as two very similar dynamic processes. Özdamar and Honigmann create new and particular perspectives that come out of allegiances to multiple localities, and from real and imagined “double locations.” By taking these works out of their potentially competing fields of German-Jewish Studies and transnational studies and examining them instead through the common lens of spatiality, this dissertation challenges the discourse that locates Honigmann’s and Özdamar’s texts as marginal or “Other” in relation to the ii German literary canon. The dissertation concludes with speculations on the term “cosmopolitanism,” arguing that Özdamar and Honigmann rewrite the term cosmopolitanism as a highly personal and individual patchwork of allegiances to people, places, communities, and traditions. This dissertation extends existing ways of thinking about home, and migration, and cosmopolitanism and explores the permeability of boundaries, not only between these concepts, but between the disciplines of scholarship it draws upon. iii Copyright 2007 Schade, Silke All rights reserved. iv Acknowledgements This dissertation would not have been possible without the kind support of professors, colleagues, and friends. German 104 aims to develop facility in speaking, writing, and reading. German 120 is a compactintensive communicative German course that strives to cover two semesters of the language in one. German 201 emphasizes accuracy and idiomatic expression in speaking and writing. German 202 combines advanced language study with the examination of topics in German-speaking cultures. Each year the department offers upper-level courses treating various topics from the German-language intellectual, cultural, and social world in which reading, discussion and writing are in German. Students who have studied German in secondary school should take the placement test given during First Days in September to determine which course to take. STUDY ABROAD The department strongly encourages students who wish to attain fluency in German to spend a semester or year studying in Germany or Austria, either independently or in one of several approved foreign study programs. German 104 or the equivalent is the minimum requirement for junior-year abroad programs sponsored by American institutions. Students who wish to enroll directly in a German-speaking university should complete at least 201 or the equivalent.

She began to write as a child, and at the age of twelve, she even bound her texts together in the form of a first book. She learnt German and English at secondary school, and subsequently studied Russian literature at Waseda University in 1982. After this, she intended to go to Russia or Poland to study, since she was interested in European literature, especially Russian literature. However, her university grant to study in Poland was withdrawn in 1980 because of political unrest, and instead, she had the opportunity to work in Hamburg at a book trade company. She came to Europe by ship, then by trans-Siberian rail through the Soviet Union, Poland and the DDR, arriving in Berlin. In 1982, she studied German literature at Hamburg University, and thereafter completed her doctoral work on literature at Zurich University. Among various authors, she studied the poetry of Paul Celan, which she had already read in Japanese. Indeed, she comments on his poetry in an essay entitled ‘Paul Celan liest Japanisch’ in her collection of essays named Talisman and also in her essay entitled ‘Die Niemandsrose’ in the collection Sprachpolizei und Spielpolyglotte.
