O NIEUWSBRIEF Mei 2020, nr. 5 e schrijven al weer mei 2020 in een onwerkelijke tijd. Corona of COVID-19. Je hoort niet anders. Ooit hadden we aan boord bier met het merk Corona. Of we dronken het bij het stappen in bijv. Mazatlán of Acapulco. Ik begreep dat die Mexicaanse fabriek tijdelijk dit bier W met die naam even niet meer maakt. Maar het is nog wel bij AH te koop. Uiteraard liggen de activiteiten aan boord van ons mooie schip ook stil. Er lopen nog twee bewakers rond……. Daarom weer een extra dik nummer. Wel is er sinds half maart een dagelijkse PI4RTD ronde om 20.30 uur via de PI3RTD repeater. Dus toch een manier om elkaar nog even te praaien. Helaas niet via echolink. Deze nieuwsbrief begint met een voorwoord van onze voorzitter. In de rubriek ‘wetenschap’ is er aandacht voor Émile Baudot. Vervolgens zijn er weer allerlei maritieme, radio, en aanverwante wetenswaardigheden. Op 18 april jl. vierde de Holland America Lijn het 147ste jaar van haar bestaan. Als je met de muis ergens in het document links boven op het PI4HAL logo klikt dan kom je meteen weer terug naar het begin van dit document. Dit bevordert wellicht het online leesgemak. Ik zie verschrikkelijke A beelden van mensen die het raakt en onder onze ogen voltrekt zich een ramp waarvan de impact pas in de geschiedenis boekjes terugzien. Hoe kwetsbaar kunnen we zijn! Voorlopig heeft de regering nagenoeg alle maatregelen gecontinueerd en leuk is het voor niemand. Dit betekent dat ook onze activiteiten aan boord nog niet kunnen worden uitgevoerd. Als we straks op een gegeven moment kunnen versoepelen, dan zal het bestuur daarvoor eerst in overleg treden met WestCord en na onderling akkoord kunnen we dan weer aan de slag. Niet eerder. En ik zeg dit toch met enige nadruk want de aansprakelijkheden jegens elkaar, jegens de medewerkers en hosts van WestCord en toeristen zijn groot. Wij komen pas in actie na groen licht door ons bestuur. Natuurlijk heb ik begrip voor al diegenen die zeggen: “in mijn omgeving is alles rustig, dus het loopt zo’n vaart niet.” Beste mensen, dat is schijn. Zolang er geen vaccin is, is het risico op nieuwe uitbraakgolven groot. Je ziet ook nu al dat mensen de randen opzoeken maar ik hoop dat iedereen zijn verantwoordelijkheden neemt. Activiteiten, vakanties, alles staat momenteel stil. Ook de activiteiten rond de Morseschool. Ook onze jaarvergadering. Ik zal binnenkort met het bestuur in overleg treden in hoeverre we niet alvast de formele stukken van de vereniging kunnen afronden en elektronisch kunnen toesturen. Ik hoop daar binnenkort of in een volgende nieuwsbrief met nadere mededelingen over te kunnen komen. Toch schijnt buiten de zon op het moment dat ik dit schrijf. Het is een prachtig voorjaar al hoewel we de planten wel weer wat water mogen toewensen. Ik hoop dat jullie met mij toch een beetje van deze mooie kant van de natuur weten te genieten, terwijl er een onzichtbaar noodweer over de wereld raast. Nu er voor de reisbranche op wereldwijd niveau een pauze is ingelast, kijkt de premium cruiseorganisatie terug op de veerkracht die het bedrijf in het verleden toonde. Holland America Line maakte veel uitdagende tijden mee, maar kwam daar altijd sterker uit dankzij loyale gasten, toegewijde bemanning en medewerkers en de ondersteuning van reisadviseurs. Bron: Cruisereiziger. 6 NIEUWSBRIEF Mei 2020, nr. 5 Émile Baudot Jean-Maurice-Émile Baudot (Magneux (Haute- Marne), 11 september 1845 – Sceaux (bij Parijs), 28 maart 1903) was een Franse telegraaf-ingenieur en bedenker van de Baudotcode. Hij was een van de pioniers op het gebied van telecommunicatie. Met zijn code konden over een enkele verbinding drie telegrammen tegelijkertijd worden verzonden. Zijn zelfdrukkende telegraaf, de voorloper van de telex, werkte met een asynchrone seriële verbinding. De term baud is naar hem vernoemd. In 1949 bracht de Franse Post een serie postzegels uit met zijn portret. Per ongeluk werd het geboortejaar 1848 weergegeven, in plaats van 1845. De postzegels werden hierna opnieuw uitgebracht met het juiste jaartal. De Baudotcode is dus een door Émile Baudot ontworpen codering, die wordt gebruikt om informatie op een automatische wijze via een lijnverbinding over te dragen, aanvankelijk met de hand op een toetsenbord met vijf toetsen en naderhand door middel van een op de typemachine gebaseerd toetsenbord op telexmachines. Het systeem was een opvolger van de morsecode en maakte het mogelijk om tot vier berichten gelijktijdig over 1 lijn te verzenden. De allereerste apparatuur waarmee berichten volgens het systeem van Baudot konden worden verzonden werkte als volgt: Vier operators stonden rond een tafel waaroverheen een arm mechanisch ronddraaide over een aantal contacten. Alle vier de operators hadden een toetsenbord waarop met de vingers van de linkerhand twee en met de vingers van de rechterhand drie toetsen konden worden bediend. Deze toetsen waren verbonden met de contacten op de tafel waarover de arm bewoog. Iedere operator kon de toetsencombinatie voor 1 letter instellen zolang de arm niet over zijn kant van de tafel bewoog. Op deze manier werd een tijdwinst geboekt, waardoor de berichten sneller konden worden verzonden dan met de gangbare morsecode. De Baudotcode was geoptimaliseerd naar het gebruik van het toetsenbord, zodat de meest voorkomende letters konden worden ingesteld met zo eenvoudig mogelijke bewegingen van de vingers. Later gingen de ontwikkelingen verder. Voor het overbrengen van morseberichten waren getrainde marconisten nodig en de snelheid was beperkt. In eerste instantie werden morseschrijvers ingezet, waarmee men de ontvangen code op een smalle papierstrook liet schrijven. Toch was nog steeds een persoon nodig om de punten en strepen om te zetten naar leesbare tekst. Men ging op zoek naar mogelijkheden om dit proces te automatiseren. I analyze how script and narration come together to function as a site of expression, and how they connect to questions of visuality, textuality, and materiality. Informed by work from the field of textual humanities, my project brings together new philological approaches to visual aspects of text in literature written in the Japanese script. Because research in English on the visual textuality of Japanese-language literature is scant, my work serves as a fundamental first-step in creating a new area of critical interest by establishing key terms and a general theoretical framework from which to approach the topic.     Boku in Edo Epistolary Texts KATSUE AKIBA REYNOLDS The change from the feudal period to the modern via the Meiji Restoration was certainly one of the most turbulent and complex in the history of Japan and many details of the change remain unexplained. In the process of such a fundamental social change, language inevitably plays a crucial role in forming and accommodating new meanings and new ideologies. This essay is about boku, a first person pronoun or self-reference form for males. It ar.peared rather abruptly in Japanese around the time of the MeiJi Restoration and it lias quickly become one of the major male first person pronouns. Although it is apparently of a Chinese origin, its history as a Japanese word is not necessarily clear. How and why did it come into being in Japanese at the time when it did? I have examined some texts from the Edo period in an attempt to bring to light the early history of boku in Japanese. Bringing various linguistic, sociological and historical facts together, it becomes possible to see the way boku entered Japanese. Spread of the use of boku began in personal letters exchanged among a close circle of samurai scholars-forerunners of modern intellectuals. Self in Feudal Society That Japanese has several variants of self-reference is well known. Where an English speaker uses 'I' regardless of his/her social status, class, age, gender, etc., for example, a Japanese speaker would have to choose an appropriate form from a set of first person pronouns including watakushi, watashi, boku, and ore.

Despite being monotonic and irregular, good Morse has a curiously musical quality, far from monotonous. However, on the air we typically face QRM, QRN, QSB, weak/marginal signals leading to errors and gaps in the copy, confusion, fatigue and frustration. It is named for Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. The International Morse Code[1] encodes the ISO basic Latin alphabet, some extra Latin letters, the Arabic numerals and a small set of punctuation and procedural signals (prosigns) as standardized sequences of short and long signals called "dots" and "dashes",[1] or "dits" and "dahs", as in amateur radio practice. Because many non-English natural languages use more than the 26 Roman letters, extensions to the Morse alphabet exist for those languages. Each Morse code symbol represents either a text character (letter or numeral) or a prosign and is represented by a unique sequence of dots and dashes. The duration of a dash is three times the duration of a dot. Each dot or dash is followed by a short silence, equal to the dot duration. The letters of a word are separated by a space equal to three dots (one dash), and the words are separated by a space equal to seven dots. The dot duration is the basic unit of time measurement in code transmission.[1] To increase the speed of the communication, the code was designed so that the length of each character in Morse varies approximately inversely to its frequency of occurrence in English. Thus the most common letter in English, the letter "E", has the shortest code, a single dot.
