DC City Guide Page | 1 Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States and the seat of its three branches of government, has a collection of free, public museums unparalleled in size and scope throughout the history of mankind, and the lion's share of the nation's most treasured monuments and memorials. The vistas on the National Mall between the Capitol, Washington Monument, White House, and Lincoln Memorial are famous throughout the world as icons of the world's wealthiest and most powerful nation. Beyond the Mall, D.C. has in the past two decades shed its old reputation as a city both boring and dangerous, with shopping, dining, and nightlife befitting a world-class metropolis. Travelers will find the city new, exciting, and decidedly cosmopolitan and international. Districts Virtually all of D.C.'s tourists flock to the Mall—a two-mile long, beautiful stretch of parkland that holds many of the city's monuments and Smithsonian museums—but the city itself is a vibrant metropolis that often has little to do with monuments, politics, or white, neoclassical buildings. The Smithsonian is a "can't miss," but don't trick yourself—you haven't really been to D.C. until you've been out and about the city. Page | 2 Downtown (The National Mall, East End, West End, Waterfront) The center of it all: The National Mall, D.C.'s main theater district, Smithsonian and non- Smithsonian museums galore, fine dining, Chinatown, the Verizon Center, the Convention Center, the central business district, the White House, West Potomac Park, the Kennedy Center, George Washington University, the beautiful Tidal Basin, and the new Nationals Park.

Slippery University Rock Magazine Fall 2016 “All chalked up” View from the ROCK Dear Friends, I love this time of year when warm evenings melt into cool nights, and the aroma of autumn is in the air; but it’s also hard to say goodbye to summer. The summer of 2016 will be remembered as one of the busiest construction seasons on record at Slippery Rock University. Jackhammers, excavators and demolition crews were a common sight as crews worked diligently to renovate academic buildings, athletic fields and residence halls prior to the start of the fall semester. All of the work was scheduled with an eye toward modernizing academic learning environments and improving the appearance and function of buildings and campus. By the time classes resumed Aug. 29, $6.5 million in improvements had been completed. Major projects included a new entryway for Rhoads Hall; the demolition and reconstruction of the south wall at Spotts World Culture Building; the removal and resurfacing of the outdoor track at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium; and a pair of projects at Morrow Field House that included refinishing the basketball/ volleyball court and a roof replacement. In a continuing effort to extend our commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, we converted more than 70 single- occupancy restrooms to all-gender restrooms. We also FALL 2016 Volume 18, Number 3 launched the Physician Assistant Program; opened the renovated Harrisville building and welcomed the Pokémon craze to campus. We were honored this summer to receive a number of In this issue national, regional and state awards for academic quality, value and sustainability among others.

Ann P. Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center Outreach Suitcases Places, Spaces, and Faces: Modern and Contemporary Sculpture Outreach Suitcase “The materials immediately inspired great creativity . and the Educator Resource Guide inspired me to create an accordion-book project. Thanks for the supplies and inspiration.” —Elementary Parent Art Docent ABOUT THE SUITCASE The Places, Spaces, and Faces suitcase is a resource for examining modern sculpture from the late nineteenth century to the contemporary period, emphasizing objects from the collections of SAM. These objects are intended to inspire artistic creation by students and provide an interactive approach to sculpture, including exploration of materials, techniques, meaning, and history. By using these objects, students can explore not only the formal and expressive elements of sculpture, but also how sculpture conveys social concerns and issues of identity. Book this suitcase online at www.seattleartmuseum.org/programs-and-learning/schools-and-educators/teacher- resource-center/suitcases. LOOKING QUESTIONS Encourage your students to look closely at the objects in the suitcase and images from SAM’s Collection with questions like: • Describe what you see in this sculpture. How does it make you feel? • If these works were to come to life, what might they do or how would they move? • What kind of personalities would they have and why? Ann P. Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center Outreach Suitcases WHAT’S IN THE MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE OUTREACH SUITCASE? Educator Resource Guide • Octave,
