(4 images) “the red female” – reflects the color of red clay of which the fort is made built originally as a medieval stronghold – castle, palace, and residential annex for subordinates o citadel is the oldest part, then the Moorish rulers(Nasrid) palaces . palace of Charles V (smaller Renaissance) built where part of the original Alhambra (including original main entrance) was torn down Royal complex had (for the wives and mistresses): running water (cold and hot) and pressurized water for showering – bathroom were open to the elements to allow light and air Court of the Lions o Oblong courtyard (116 x 66 ft) with surrounding gallery supported on 124 white marble columns (irregularly placed), filigree wall o Fountain – figures of twelve lions: symbols of strength, power, and sovereignty . Islamic Architecture Islam arose in the early seventh century under the leadership of the prophet Muhammad. (In Arabic the word Islam means "submission" [to God].) It is the youngest of the world’s three great monotheistic religions and follows in the prophetic tradition of Judaism and Christianity. Muhammad leads Abraham, Moses and Jesus in prayer. From medieval Persian manuscript Muhammad (ca. 572-632) prophet and founder of Islam. Born in Mecca (Saudi Arabia) into a noble Quraysh clan, he was orphaned at an early age. He grew up to be a successful merchant, then according to tradition, he was visited by the angel Gabriel, who informed him that he was the messenger of God. It is built around the famous Black Stone, and it is said to have been built by Abraham and his son, Ishmael. It is the focus and goal of all Muslim pilgrims when they make their way to Mecca during their pilgrimage – the Hajj. Muslims believe that the "black stone” is a special divine meteorite, that fell at the foot of Adam and Eve. -

Culture in the Time of Tolerance: Al-Andalus as a Model for Our Own Time María Rosa Menocal María Rosa Menocal is the R. Selden Rose Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and director of the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University. This is the text of a lecture given at the closing dinner of the Middle East Legal Studies Seminar (MELSS), Istanbul, Turkey, May 9, 2000. These remarks are all adapted from material in the author's forthcoming book, The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain to be published by Little, Brown and Company in the spring of 2002. Even though I have been teaching at Yale for about fifteen years, and even though my office is about a block down Wall Street from the Law School, I first met Anthony Kronman only a few months ago. I actually picked a fight with him after a brilliant talk he gave on the Enlightenment, a period I, as a medievalist, feel ought not to be particularly glorified since it is so conspicuously responsible, along with the Renaissance, for that demonization of the Middle Ages to which we are, unfortunately, the heirs. But Tony obviously enjoyed the fight, and at the dinner after the talk, after multiple glasses of very good wine, he left me speechless when he said his notion of the perfect place to live would be where the religions of the children of Abraham all tolerate each other and where, in the peace of that tolerance, and in the shade and fragrance of orange trees, we could all sit and talk about philosophy and poetry. -

Erom these casts and paper impressions, full-sized drawings have been made with great fidelity, by my pupils, Albert "Warren and Charles Aubert, and the ornaments carved, moulded, cast, and fixed by Mr. ITenry A. Smith and his two sons, assisted by a very intelli¬ gent body of English workmen. It is impossible to praise too highly the zeal and intelligence of Mr. Smith ; by an endless variety of expedients for economising labour, he has succeeded in clothing with ornament the “Alhambra Court” in an in¬ credibly short space of time. -
A Journey Through Medieval Dar Al-Islam
A Journey through Medieval Dar al-Islam Overview Students will visit stations for medieval cities scattered throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe that were predominantly Muslim. For each city, they will analyze architecture, artifacts, and/or primary sources and will complete a journal of their experiences there. To conclude the lesson, they will focus on similarities and differences between the regions to answer the central historical question: What was life like in the Medieval Islamic world? Grade 9 Subject World History Essential Standards • WH.H.3 - Understand how conflict and innovation influenced political, religious, economic and social changes in medieval civilizations. • WH.H.1 - Apply the four interconnected dimensions of historical thinking to the Essential Standards for World History in order to understand the creation and development of societies/civilizations/nations over time. Essential Questions • How does an individual benefit from living in a diverse society? • How did religion influence political power and cultural unity in regions of Europe, Asia and Africa that were predominantly controlled by Muslims? • How did innovations in agriculture, trade and business impact the economic and social development of Medieval Islamic societies? Materials • Journey through Dar al Islam slides (attached) • Travel journal sheets for each student (attached) • Printed station sheets in envelopes or folders for each locale (attached) o Includes sheets for each of the following cities: Cairo, Baghdad, Delhi, Granada, Timbuktu Preparation Students should be familiar with the Golden Age of Islam and Feudal Europe. Duration 90 minutes Procedure Introduction (5-10 Minutes) 1. As a warm up, ask students what is meant by “diversity.” List various aspects of what makes a community diverse on the board. -
