Siri von Saft had just left the salon room of the hotel in Berlin and headed down the foyer of the banquet area to the lobby after making excuses to the bride for her early departure and assurances for her attendance at the wedding the next day. The ladies were seated at tables in the tastefully decorated salon having a good time but in her present mood Siri felt the entertainment failed to compliment the urbane tone of the décor. The loud music was obnoxious and the two male strippers strutting around the tables of the bachelorette party were extremely ludicrous to say the least. Siri had noticed that the mothers, aunts and older female relatives were enduring the raucously vulgar scene all in good fun, but she was betting that some of them wished they could have walked away from the family obligation. The men of the wedding party were waiting in the lobby lounge at the bar, there was to be a joint fête after the girl’s fun was over and the gentlemen would join them later in the salon for drinks, buffet and dancing. I know you’ll adore him, he’s a marvellous chap,” Bastian expressed adamantly. “Oh come on Bastian, you’re trying to fix me up with some man who probably has a lot of psychological baggage or who is desperate to get a date for the night. Uh ah, no way Bastian, it’s not going to happen and besides, neither your mother nor your wife said anything to me about it and I’ve been with them most of the day.” 2 Chrysopoeia For Fallen Angels “No Siri, it’s not that way at all, he just got in late this afternoon from London and we kept him on the attendance list in case he could make it to the wedding so Rosalind probably doesn’t even know he’s here. At least just meet him.” To her embarrassment Bastian grabbed her arm and led her towards the lobby bar where the men were crowded in a large group waiting for the wedding party to start, her high heels made audible tapping sounds on the marble floor as she walked and attracted stares as some of the men turned to discover the source of the noise. After Siri released a heavy sigh at being forced to humour one of his whims, Bastian sensed her discomfort and halted a distance away from the lounge. Bastian Cristal was her longtime dear friend indicial of a facetious younger brother, always the nosey-parker, devious in his stratagems and yet so sincere and instinctive at times revealing him as an all-knowing angel. “Wait here Siri and I’ll introduce you.” Bastian walked back towards the bar and approached his father, Ian Cristal, who was speaking with a broad-shouldered man in a black suit with a financial centre haircut. 3 Chrysopoeia For Fallen Angels She shook her head and laughed at the situation. The guy was probably a prim and proper, zero-personality aristocrat or a business mogul who in all likelihood wanted to meet some twenty-two year old bimbo for arm candy rather than a forty- nine year old woman who was a nonconformist and a lover of wisdom. At least Bastian had the courtesy to allow for some measure of privacy instead of leading her into the entire group of males to observe his machinations. “Excuse me father, I’m stealing Alec from you.” Bastian lightly touched Alec’s sleeve and moved him away to have a word with him. “Siri’s leaving, if you can’t convince her to stay then follow her. Ask her to dinner, a bar, a café, anything! Back her into a corner and don’t let her refuse you. At the very least make sure she gets back to her hotel room safely, promise me.” Bastian looked him in the eyes with absolute conviction of some secret truth and was almost challenging Alec to refuse him. “Alright, I give you my word.” Alec was curious at his friend’s insistence. “Here I am in my early fifties and I’m taking dating advice from a younger married man who sounds like an old matchmaker woman dabbling in other people’s love lives. Is this what your father calls one of your crazy premonitions?” 4 Chrysopoeia For Fallen Angels “I know things Alec, I see them, feel them, and at this moment it’s as right as rain, trust me. Siri is a captivating person. You’ll idolise her. She has the spirit of some immortal enchanted fay. Just ask my parents or Rosalind, they’ll vouch for me, they adore her. If you had not refused our many invitations to visit us in Argyll you would have met Siri sooner, but you’d never leave your bloody nightlife in London.” Bastian walked across the lobby accompanied by the tall, well-dressed gentleman with dark brown hair and a look of embarrassment on his face. Siri stood alone in patient insipid compliance just waiting for the social ceremony to be over with. Alec fixed his eyes on the petite woman with shoulder- length blonde hair clutching her handbag and standing as straight as a soldier at attention. She was dressed in black slacks and a gold silk blouse under a long black wool coat and wore black leather gloves. Even for her small stature she had a marked presence and exuded confidence, especially when being forced to tolerate one of Bastian’s fancies. He surveyed her from top to bottom, his eyes locking on the strappy black leather high heeled booties. Such models lead to four-dimensional theories with non-abelian gauge interactions and charged chiral fermions. We discuss the application of these techniques to building of models with spectrum as close as possible to the Stan- dard Model, and review their main phenomenological properties. We finally describe how to implement the tecniques to construct these models in flux compactifications, leading to models with realistic gauge sectors, moduli stabilization and supersymmetry breaking soft terms. Lecture 1. Model building in IIA: Intersecting brane worlds 1 Introduction String theory has the remarkable property that it provides a description of gauge and gravitational interactions in a unified framework consistently at the quantum level. It is this general feature (beyond other beautiful properties of particular string models) that makes this theory interesting as a possible candidate to unify our description of the different particles and interactions in Nature. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood.     Mathematically Talented Women in Hollywood: Fred in Angel Sarah J. Greenwald and Jill E. Thomley Appalachian State University Introduction Individual faculty such as those represented in this volume have used popular culture in the class- room to alleviate math anxiety and to help students connect to significant mathematics. Recent educational initiatives such as We All Use Math Every Day [12], co-sponsored by CBS, Texas In- struments, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and MathMovesU [31], sponsored by Raytheon, strive to change attitudes and attract students to mathematics by capitalizing on student enjoyment of celebrities and popular culture. At the same time, Hollywood has increased its use of math and mathematicians, but some of those representations may not be all that positive for attracting students to mathematics. Others have examined the stereotype of the mentally ill mathematician (e.g., [25]), which may make it harder for students to identify with mathematicians. In this article we discuss the representations of mathematically talented women in Hollywood and provide a framework for examining the messages they may convey to the public and our students as we examine the example of physicist Fred Burkle in the television show Angel [1]. Unlike more recent representations of women mathematicians, such as Amita in NUMB3RS, which are aimed at a more mature audience, Angel aired on the WB network from October 1999 to May 2004 as part of a lineup of programs specifically targeted at teens and young adults. It is for this reason, and also because Fred’s experiences provide a rich context to discuss a variety of issues related to women in mathematics, that we chose Fred as a case study.

The conjecture is motivated by the properties of systems of fractional D3- branes at singularities, and can be used to rule out large classes of warped throats with super- symmetry breaking ingredients, and their possible application to de Sitter uplift. In particular, this allows to reinterpret the runaway instabilities of the gravity dual of fractional branes in the dP1 theory, and to rule out warped throats with Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking D-brane sectors at their bottom. We also discuss the instabilities of warped throats with supersymme- try broken by the introduction of anti-orientifold planes. Los Angeles, 27 Feb 1999) began piano studies at the age of six with his mother, the pianist Mary Lou Malone, and took up trombone two years later. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1943 and he studied trombone in school, playing with Frank Morgan in a high-school band; other young associates from this period included Don Cherry and Billy Higgins.
