When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

Tauris and appears here with the permission of the author, the editor, and the publisher. Go here to order the book from Amazon. (1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022).

  • Salvific Luck in Islamic Theology Amir Saemi Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) Tehran Iran
Salvific Luck in Islamic Theology Amir Saemi Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) Tehran Iran Scott A. Davison Morehead State University Morehead KY USA Abstract: One of the major arguments for theological voluntarism offered by the Ash’arites (e.g. al-Ghazali) involves the claim that that some of the factors upon which our salvation or condemnation depend are beyond our control. We will call this “the problem of salvific luck.” According to the Ash’arites, the fact that God does save and condemn human beings on the basis of factors beyond their control casts doubt on any non-voluntarist conception of divine justice. A common way to respond to this Ash’arite argument for voluntarism is to eliminate the role of luck in God’s judgments. But this is not the Mu’tazilite way of resisting the argument. The Mu’tazilite, who oppose theological voluntarism, choose a more daunting solution to the problem of salvific luck. They reject the claim that God’s Judgment concerning the eternal destiny of some persons would be unjust (relative to the objective common sensical standard of justice that could not have been different) if it depended upon factors beyond their control. The paper discusses this solution to the problem of salvific luck. Along with many traditional theists, Islamic theologians have typically embraced the following claims: Divine Compassion: God is perfectly compassionate. Divine Justice: God is perfectly just. Divine Judgment: Every human person will survive death and will be judged by God, with the result that some will live eternally in a state of bliss (often called "salvation in Heaven"), and others will live eternally in a state of misery (often called "condemnation in Hell").

  • Great Films and How They Shaped American Politics: Manifest Destiny in Texas
Great Films and How They Shaped American Politics: Manifest Destiny in Texas Aurora Terry Lanier Middle School INTRODUCTION Manifest Destiny is the idea that the United States was destined to be a two-ocean country. U.S. presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and James K. Polk, helped bring this idea to fruition. These presidents went to great lengths to make the geography of the United States the size that it is today. The consequences of this westward push were very severe, including war and the near extermination of the Native American people. Over time, the American people have tried to justify these actions. They say that history is written by the victors, and this is definitely the case when we consider what “necessary evils” were committed in order to assimilate the lands of the United States of America. The justifications behind these aggressive actions have been portrayed historically in many different ways, especially in the movies. There are many different films that have shown both sides of the story of Manifest Destiny, and they are a great way for students to explore early American politics. The focus of the unit is Manifest Destiny in Texas. Although westward expansion was not limited to Texas, the state became a microcosm of the process between 1836 and 1895. I teach seventh-grade Texas History, so this unit will be perfect for teaching the broad subject of U.S. expansion while illustrating its effects on the state of Texas. By being presented through film specific examples and stories of the effects of Manifest Destiny on their home state, students will be inculcated with a greater sense of relevancy of the subject matter.
