THE HISTORY OF THE KINGS OF BRITAIN by GEOFFREY OF MONMOUTH Edited and Translated by J.A. Giles, D.C.L. BOOK VI. CHAP. I.--Gratian, being advanced to the throne, is killed by the common people. The Britons desire the Romans to defend them against Guanius and Melga. But Gratian Municeps, hearing of the death of Maximian, seized the crown, and made himself king. After this he exercised such tyranny that the common people fell upon him in a tumultuous manner, and murdered him. When this news reached other countries, their former enemies returned back from Ireland, and bringing with them the Scots, Norwegians, and Dacians, made dreadful devastations with fire and sword over the whole kingdom, from sea to sea. Upon this most grievous calamity and oppression, ambassadors are despatched with letters to Rome, to beseech, with tears and vows of perpetual subjection, that a body of men might be sent to revenge their injuries, and drive out the enemy from them. The ambassadors in a short time prevailed so far, that, unmindful of past injuries, the Romans granted them one legion, which was transported in a fleet to their country, and there speedily encountered the enemy. At last, after the slaughter of a vast multitude of them, they drove them entirely out of the country, and rescued the miserable people from their outrageous cruelty. Then they gave orders for a wall to be built between Albania and Deira, from one sea to the other, for a terror to the enemy, and safeguard to the country. At that time Albania was wholly laid to waste, by the frequent invasions of barbarous nations; and whatever enemies made an attempt upon the country, met with a convenient landing-place there. -

ALBAN OF VERULAMIUM Hundreds and hundreds of years ago – nearly two thousand years ago in fact - the Romans ruled Britain. They had done impressive things here, particularly in the building of fine roads and cities. One of the cities they built was Verulamium. It stood in what is now the southern part of St Albans, where today there is a park and a lake, a museum and a few ruined walls. Among the many people who lived in this city was a man called Alban. He was a wealthy man and well-known in the town, and had been given the honour of being made a Roman citizen. One day Alban was in his villa when he heard a frantic knocking on his door. On opening it he found a Christian priest who was desperately looking for a hiding place. Diocletian, the Roman Emperor, had recently issued a savage edict announcing that all Christians should be rounded up and killed. Anyone found with the Cross on their person or talking about Jesus or breaking bread with others would instantly be arrested under Roman law. The priest was running for his life. The name of the priest is not known, but he has come to be known as Amphibalus, because that is the name of the type of cloak he wore. Alban was not a Christian at this point in the story: he would have worshipped the gods and goddesses of the Roman religion – deities such as Jupiter and Juno, Mars, Mercury and Venus. He felt sorry for the Christian priest, however, and invited him into his house. -

Abstract This doctoral dissertation investigates the writings of the Venerable Bede (673-735) in the context of miracles and the miraculous. It begins by exploring the patristic tradition through which he developed his own historical and hagiographical work, particularly the thought of Gregory the Great in the context of doubt and Augustine of Hippo regarding history and truth. It then suggests that Bede had a particular affinity for the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles as models for the writing of specifically ecclesiastical history. The use of sources to attest miracle narratives in six hagiographies known to Bede from Late Antiquity are explored before applying this knowledge to Bede and five of his early Insular contemporaries. The research is rounded off by a discussion of Bede’s use of miracles in the context of reform, particularly his desire to provide adequate pastoral care through his understanding of the ideal bishop best exemplified by Cuthbert and John of Beverley. -

1 Homily for the Second Sunday after Pentecost Fr. Filip Lommaert Sunday, July 4, 2021 In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. One God. Today, on the second Sunday of Pentecost, we listened to the Gospel reading from Saint Matthew. Although very short, it still has an important message. Christ, our Saviour, called Peter, Andrew, James, and John to leave everything behind and follow Him. They did not hesitate, ask questions, nor object, but just did what He asked of them. These disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist and were prepared to accept Christ immediately. Though illiterate and unlearned in religion, these “people of the land” whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all. Our Lord knew exactly what He wanted of them, but did they know? No. They did not have a clear understanding of what Jesus wanted of them, because this was only the beginning of their ministry as disciples and apostles. They would only start to understand who Christ really was until after the resurrection. Let us not forget that they were simple hard-working fishermen. Nothing in their lives had prepared them for what was to come. Nothing had prepared them for this unusual Messiah, Christ. Nothing had prepared them for the sacrifices that would be expected from them once they obeyed Christ’s request to follow Him. They did not need to understand right now. The only thing they needed to do was to abandon their old lives and follow Him. -

STORY of ANGLICANISM PART 1 (26th May 2018) ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL FOUNDATIONS When does Anglican history begin? The 16th century division of medieval Christendom into national and denominational jurisdictions marked the beginning of separate development in English religion. But to understand the particular shape of Anglicanism, it is helpful to know the pre-Reformation church from which it evolved. Our study of the ancient and medieval English Church will not only illumine generic topics of Christian history (eg. conversion of the barbarians, the monastic ideal the struggles of bishops and kings, etc.), but it will also reveal certain Anglican traits rooted deeply in the past of Britain’s relatively pragmatic and moderate peoples. This is perhaps a point not to be pressed too far, lest the increasingly diverse branches of the Anglican Communion begin to slight the particulars of their own local histories in favour of a romanticised pedigree of Celts, cathedrals and kings. Nevertheless, the English reformers repeatedly stressed that theirs was not a new church, but one that had its origins in earliest centuries of the faith. And while a majority of the Communion no longer confuses being Anglican with being English, we may still find considerable pleasure in claiming these stories as part of our family lore.
