The ambassadors in a short time prevailed so far, that, unmindful of past injuries, the Romans granted them one legion, which was transported in a fleet to their country, and there speedily encountered the enemy. At last, after the slaughter of a vast multitude of them, they drove them entirely out of the country, and rescued the miserable people from their outrageous cruelty. Then they gave orders for a wall to be built between Albania and Deira, from one sea to the other, for a terror to the enemy, and safeguard to the country. At that time Albania was wholly laid to waste, by the frequent invasions of barbarous nations; and whatever enemies made an attempt upon the country, met with a convenient landing-place there.

    ALBAN OF VERULAMIUM Hundreds and hundreds of years ago – nearly two thousand years ago in fact - the Romans ruled Britain. They had done impressive things here, particularly in the building of fine roads and cities. One of the cities they built was Verulamium. It stood in what is now the southern part of St Albans, where today there is a park and a lake, a museum and a few ruined walls. Among the many people who lived in this city was a man called Alban. He was a wealthy man and well-known in the town, and had been given the honour of being made a Roman citizen. One day Alban was in his villa when he heard a frantic knocking on his door. On opening it he found a Christian priest who was desperately looking for a hiding place. Diocletian, the Roman Emperor, had recently issued a savage edict announcing that all Christians should be rounded up and killed. Anyone found with the Cross on their person or talking about Jesus or breaking bread with others would instantly be arrested under Roman law. The priest was running for his life. The name of the priest is not known, but he has come to be known as Amphibalus, because that is the name of the type of cloak he wore. Alban was not a Christian at this point in the story: he would have worshipped the gods and goddesses of the Roman religion – deities such as Jupiter and Juno, Mars, Mercury and Venus. He felt sorry for the Christian priest, however, and invited him into his house.

Amen. ANGLICANISM’S TUDOR BEGINNINGS The Church of England (and therefore the Episcopal Church) traces its specifically Anglican identity with its links to the State back to the Reformation. Henry VIII started the process of creating the Church of England after his split with Rome in the 1530s as he ended his marriage with Catherine of Aragon and moved on to Anne Boleyn. The first Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament in 1534, granted Henry and subsequent monarchs Royal Supremacy, such that they were declared the Supreme Head of the Church of England. ANGLICANISM’S ANGLO-SAXON BEGINNINGS The Church of England often dates its formal foundation to St.Augustine of Canterbury’s Gregorian Mission to England in 597. Like Henry VIII this "Apostle to the English" can be considered a founder of the English Church. Augustine was the 1st and the Most Rev. Justin Welby is the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury. The present edition which offers the first critical text of a Variant Version of the Historia, based on manuscripts that hitherto passed under the name of Geoffrey, is only another step in this advance. It represents the first fruits of an investigation undertaken many years ago and is preliminary to a critical edition of the Historia, based on all manuscripts known to scholars, the larger portion of which (135 in actual numbers) has already been col- lated. A task of this scope could not have been undertaken without outside assistance. Jones, Advisor Leslie Lockett Karen Winstead Copyright by Erin Marie Szydloski Shaull 2015 Abstract This dissertation argues that literature in Old English and early Middle English characterizes legacy-giving as a serious obligation of fatherhood and key paternal role. I contend that the father’s legacy in this cultural context can be understood to include property, heirlooms, wisdom, and kin ties. This project contributes to the emerging study of fatherhood, which has begun to examine fatherhood as a previously under-explored phenomenon that is both a cultural institution and a part of many men’s lived experiences. I examine Anglo-Saxon law-codes, Old English wisdom poetry, Beowulf, and the Middle English texts The Proverbs of Alfred and Layamon’s Brut in order to argue for the cultural importance of this fatherly role. I argue that many of the same cultural markers of Anglo-Saxon paternal legacy continue to be relevant after the Norman Conquest, but that the Norman practice of strict patrilineal primogeniture alters certain aspects of fatherhood. While Old English literature prizes a relationship between father and son that includes an ongoing giving of self on the part of the father, early Middle English literature prefers an ideal father who serves as a prototype for the son, dying just as the son reaches adulthood.

    The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

  • A Brief History of St Albans
    Who was Saint Alban ? St Alban was a Roman soldier venerated as the first Christian martyr in Britain. He was scourged and beheaded on 22 June 303 AD (but see below) for sheltering and changing clothes with a fugitive Christian priest who had converted him to Christianity. King Offa of Mercia founded a monastery on the site of his execution in 793, and the place was renamed St Albans. Alban was a Romano-British pagan living in the city of Verulamium sometime during the 3rd or 4th century. During a religious persecution of Christians, he sheltered a Christian priest (traditionally called Amphibalus) in his home, hiding him from the Roman soldiers. Alban was so inspired by the priest’s teaching that, when the soldiers arrived in pursuit, he put on the priest’s robes and handed himself over. Challenged and sentenced to death he declared “I worship and adore the true and living God, who created all things.” The priest also gave himself up, inspired by Alban’s faith and courage. He was led out of the city, across the river Ver and up a hillside where he was beheaded. As with all good stories, the legend grew with time. Bede, writing in the 8th century, describes the river miraculously dividing to let Alban pass and a spring of water appearing to provide a drink for the saint. Observing this, the executioner was so moved that he cast down his sword and fell at Alban’s feet, praying that he might suffer with Alban or be executed in his stead.
