REGARDING RECEPTION OF THE HOLY COMMUNION

Those who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; who, being in love and charity with others, have prepared themselves by repentance and fasting (at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion) and, if necessary, by the Sacrament of Penance; and who believe in the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, may receive Holy Communion. Anyone may come forward to receive a blessing by folding their arms across their chest. The Blessed Sacrament is given “in one kind” (the Host), and may be received either on the tongue or in the palm of the hand.

  

A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Teach us, good Lord, to serve thee as thou deservest, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing that we do thy will. Amen.

A PRAYER AFTER WORSHIP I thank thee, loving Jesus, for having this day allowed me to take part in this Holy Mys- tery (and to receive the Sacrament of thy Body and Blood). Forgive me any inattention or wandering thoughts, and help me to lead a good life in this world, so that I may at last see thee face to face with thy in heaven. Amen.

THE SUMMARY OF THE LAW ear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and H great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

2

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY lmighty God, by whose grace and power thy holy martyr Alban triumphed over suffering and was faithful even unto death: Grant to us, who now re- A member him with thanksgiving, to be so faithful in our witness to thee in this world, that we may receive with him the crown of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The People sit.

THE LESSON ESDRAS 2:42-48 I, Ezra, saw on Mount Zion a great multitude, which I could not number, and they all were praising the Lord with songs. In their midst was a young man of great stature, tall- er than any of the others, and on the head of each of them he placed a crown, but he was more exalted than they. And I was held spellbound. Then I asked an angel, “Who

3 are these, my lord?” He answered and said to me, “These are they who have put off mortal clothing and have put on the immortal, and they have confessed the name of God; now they are being crowned, and receive palms.” Then I said to the angel, “Who is that young man who places crowns on them and puts palms in their hands?” He an- swered and said to me, “He is the Son of God, whom they confessed in the world.” So I began to praise those who had stood valiantly for the name of the Lord. Then the an- gel said to me, “Go, tell my people how great and many are the wonders of the Lord God which you have seen.” The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL PSALM 31:1-5

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to| shame; * deliver me in your|righteousness.

Incline your ear |to me; * make haste to de| liver me.

Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my | stronghold; * for the sake of your Name, lead me and| guide me.

Take me out of the net that they have secretly set| for me, * for you are my tower of | strength.

Into your hands I commend my |spirit, * for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of | truth.

THE EPISTLE JOHN 3:13-16 Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eter- nal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL HYMN HYMNAL #675 Take Up Your Cross, the Savior said

THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 10:34-42

THE HOLY GOSPEL  OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daugh- ter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s foes will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it. He who re- ceives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me. He who re- ceives a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward. The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

THE HOMILY

THE NICENE CREED

BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, I and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,

5

begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, Bow and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; rise and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer is the following response:

Deacon Lord in thy mercy: People Hear our prayer.

The Celebrant then concludes with an appropriate Collect.

We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. The Celebrant then gives Absolution.

6

Raise them up if they fall. And in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC SACRIFICE

The People stand and join in the following responses as the Oblation is offered to God.

At the Offering of the Bread Priest Blessèd art thou, Lord God of all creation; through thy goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the Bread of Heaven. People Blessèd be God for ever.

At the Offering of the Wine Priest Blessèd art thou, Lord God of all creation; through thy goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the Cup of Salvation. People Blessèd be God for ever.

Priest The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered this day to the greater glory of God, in thanksgiving for the gift of his Son (and for ____). Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Father almighty. People May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his Holy Church. Priest Amen. 7

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all plac- es, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

Here a Proper Preface is sung

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

SANCTUS

8

The People kneel and the Celebrant continues ll glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the A cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to con- tinue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

“Take, eat, THIS IS MY BODY, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

“Drink ye all of this; for THIS IS MY BLOOD of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” 

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly be- loved Son our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

9

And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ,  be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.

Remember, Lord, also the souls of thy servants and handmaidens, which are gone be- fore us with the mark of faith, and rest in the sleep of peace [especially ______]. We beseech thee, O Lord, that unto them, and unto all such as rest in Christ, thou wilt grant a place of refreshing, of light, and of peace.

To us sinners also, thy servants who hope in the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some portion and fellowship with blessèd Mary, the ever-Virgin Mother of our Lord and God Jesus Christ; with Joseph, her most chaste spouse; with our Patron Al- ban the Martyr; (with ___); and with all thy Saints, within whose fellowship we beseech thee to admit us.

And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacri- fice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Al- mighty, world without end. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

THE LORD’S PRAYER HYMNAL S-119

THE FRACTION Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all evils, past, present, and to come: and at the intercession of the blessèd and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with thy blessèd Apostles Peter and Paul, and with Andrew, and all thy Saints,  favorably grant peace in our days: that by the help of thine availing mercy we may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress. Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

10

THE PEACE Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with thy spirit.

AGNUS DEI

O Lord, Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; Regard not our sins but the faith of thy Church, and grant to her that peace and unity which is according to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. 11

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS E DO NOT PRESUME to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trust- ing in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. W We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Ta- ble. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Celebrant issues the INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION and then ministers the Blessed Sacrament to himself. After this, those who are watching the live-stream are invited to make their ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION using the following prayer

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION n union, O Lord, with the faithful at every altar of thy Church where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is now being celebrated, I I desire to offer thee praise and thanksgiving. I present to thee my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may always be united to thee. Though I cannot now receive thee sacramentally, yet I believe that thou art able, even when received by faith and desire only, to heal, en- rich, and sanctify me. Come thou spiritually into my heart. I desire to unite myself to thee, with all the affections of my soul. Possess me whol- ly; let the consuming fire of thy love absorb me, and thy presence abide so intimately in me, that it will be no longer I that live, but thou who livest in me. Let nothing ever separate me from thee. May I live and die in thy love. Amen.

HOLY COMMUNION

At the direction of the Ushers, those desiring and prepared to receive the Holy Communion or a Bless- ing come forward to the Priests at the Communion Stations.

COMMUNION HYMN HYMNAL #593 Lord Make Us Servants of your Peace

And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

WHO IS SAINT ALBAN? From “Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018”

Alban is the earliest Christian in Britain who is known by name and, according to tradi- tion, the first British martyr. He was a soldier in the Roman army, stationed at Verula- mium, a city about twenty miles northeast of , now called St. Alban’s. He gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing from persecution and was converted by him. When officers came to Alban’s house, he dressed himself in the garments of the priest and gave himself up. Alban was tortured and martyred in place of the priest, on the hilltop where the of St. Alban’s now stands. The traditional date of his martyrdom is 303 or 304, although the dates 209 and 251 have also been suggested by some scholars. The site of Alban’s martyrdom soon became a . King established a monastery there about the year 793, and, in the , St. Alban’s ranked as the premier abbey in .

St. gives this account of Alban’s trial: “When Alban was brought in, the judge happened to be standing before an altar, offering sacrifice to demons… ‘What is your family and race?’ demanded the judge. ‘How does my family concern you?’ replied Al- ban; ‘If you wish to know the truth about my religion, know that I am a Christian and am ready to do a Christian’s duty.’ ‘I demand to know your name,’ insisted the judge. ‘Tell me at once.’ ‘My parents named me Alban,’ he answered, ‘and I worship and adore the living and true God, who created all things.’”

MUSIC NOTES FROM OUR ORGANIST During his studies at Trinity College of Cambridge, the great English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) la- beled himself a “modest atheist”; however, he still attended Mass on Sundays in London and notated musical ideas he was hearing. By simply being present in church, he recognized the sound and sights of beauty, and this beauty inspired his musical contributions to the Anglican Church—our hymnal features 27 hymns he composed/arranged. He wrote, “Music is reaching out to the ultimate realities by means of ordered sound.” In the end, Vaughan Williams knew spiritual transcend- ence and how music may serve as a vehicle in building awareness of the Divine.
