Francis at [email protected] REGARDING RECEPTION OF THE HOLY COMMUNION Those who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; who, being in love and charity with others, have prepared themselves by repentance and fasting (at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion) and, if necessary, by the Sacrament of Penance; and who believe in the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, may receive Holy Communion. Anyone may come forward to receive a blessing by folding their arms across their chest. The Blessed Sacrament is given “in one kind” (the Host), and may be received either on the tongue or in the palm of the hand. A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Teach us, good Lord, to serve thee as thou deservest, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing that we do thy will. Amen. A PRAYER AFTER WORSHIP I thank thee, loving Jesus, for having this day allowed me to take part in this Holy Mys- tery (and to receive the Sacrament of thy Body and Blood). Forgive me any inattention or wandering thoughts, and help me to lead a good life in this world, so that I may at last see thee face to face with thy Saints in heaven. Amen. Amen. The People sit. THE LESSON ESDRAS 2:42-48 I, Ezra, saw on Mount Zion a great multitude, which I could not number, and they all were praising the Lord with songs. In their midst was a young man of great stature, tall- er than any of the others, and on the head of each of them he placed a crown, but he was more exalted than they. And I was held spellbound. Then I asked an angel, “Who 3 are these, my lord?” He answered and said to me, “These are they who have put off mortal clothing and have put on the immortal, and they have confessed the name of God; now they are being crowned, and receive palms.” Then I said to the angel, “Who is that young man who places crowns on them and puts palms in their hands?” He an- swered and said to me, “He is the Son of God, whom they confessed in the world.” So I began to praise those who had stood valiantly for the name of the Lord. Then the an- gel said to me, “Go, tell my people how great and many are the wonders of the Lord God which you have seen.” The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM 31:1-5 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to| shame; * deliver me in your|righteousness. Incline your ear |to me; * make haste to de| liver me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my | stronghold; * for the sake of your Name, lead me and| guide me. Take me out of the net that they have secretly set| for me, * for you are my tower of | strength. Into your hands I commend my |spirit, * for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of | truth. THE EPISTLE JOHN 3:13-16 Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eter- nal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 4 GOSPEL HYMN HYMNAL #675 Take Up Your Cross, the Savior said THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 10:34-42 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daugh- ter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s foes will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it. He who re- ceives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me. He who re- ceives a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward. The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ. THE HOMILY THE NICENE CREED BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, I and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, 5 begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, Bow and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; rise and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
