FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY.

FAIGE, THE FAWN

Deep in the forest, there was a family of deer. They were a wonderful, joyous family. Boruch, the tauck, arxi Dassde, the doe, were the parents of many children, many little deer. They took their responsibilities as parents very seriously. They knew that the most important thing that they could convey to their children was the skill of survival, and that while the deer wasnt very strcng and couldn't fight off larger animals like the lien, the deer could be very swift and could outrun the lien. Therefore, from the time that their children were very young they tried to teach them to run fast. They made up games that involved running and they did all sorts cf activities that involved running to make sure that their children, without feeling overburdened, would learn how to run fast. Indeed, all cf their children did learn how to run fast except for Faige, the fawn. Faige, you see, felt put upcxi by this whole business of having to learn how to run fast. Faige said to herself, "It's not fair; it's just not fair that I should have to learn how to run fast. There have got to be better ways to escape the lien." And so, Faige, instead cf participating in all cf the other activities to learn how to run fast would go off on her own seeking different ways to escape. Indeed, cne day Faige saw a snake being chased by a rodent. She saw the snake slither quickly into the underbrush and escape. Faige said to herself, "Why that is a wonderful way to escape." So Faige the fawn decided that she, too, was going to learn how to slither. She got down on her stomach and she began to practice. Day after day and week after week Faige the fawn would be down there on the ground practicing slithering into the underbrush.

Time passed and cne day Faige saw a kangaroo. She saw another animal chasing the kangaroo and the kangaroo getting back on its rear legs and leaping long distances to escape. Faige the fawn said to herself, "My goodness, that is a wonderful way to escape. I can do that also." So Faige the fawn began to practice leaping. Well, it was very clumsy far Faige the fawn to do that. But, nevertheless, she worked hard at it. She had worked hard to learn how to slither. She wouldn't learn how to run. Now she worked hard at learning how to leap great distances, but she wouldn't learn how to run.

After a while Faige the fawn saw a menkey being chased by another animal The monkey ran directly over to a tree arxi grabbed the tree around with all four legs and climbed rapidly right up into the top bushes of the tree and escaped. Faige the fawn said to herself, "My goodness, that is the most wonderful way to escape. I can do that too." So Faige the fawn began to practice climbing trees. It was very cumbersome for Faige to get up and even get all four legs around the tree, but she was insistent, and she was determined. Faige the fawn practiced climbing the tree. She wouldn't learn how to run fast, but she practiced climbing trees. Continued

Time passed, and then one day in the forest Hie rumor spread through. Someone said, "The lion is coming." Suddenly all of the deer began to run to escape frcm the lion. Faige got When you need a hotel down cn her belly and began to slither into the for your friends or underbrush, and from behind her she heard more for persistent voices calling, "The lion is yourself... coming." Off in the distance she could already see her family which had run very far away. So A Shomer Shabbos owned Faige began to leap as well as she could. The and operated Hotel is sound of the lion got closer, and her family right in this neighborhood.. appeared smaller and smaller in the distance. Finally, Faige realized that she wasn't getting very far at all and that the lion was catching up with her. So she quickly rushed over to the nearest tree, wrapped all four of her legs around the tree and began to try climbing up the tree. As she began climbing up the tree she HOTEL ESPLANADE turned back and saw the lion almost having caught up with her and, off in the great distance, her family hawing escaped by running. Page 9 FREE SERVICES SPONSORED BY OUTREACH DEPARTMENT

This year, as in the past three years, in addition to our free Rosh HaShana abridged service led by Rabbis

Reich and Buchwald which attracted one hundred and fifty people, we ran a free Yom Kippur service. Our

Yom Kippur free service which was full to capacity with over three hundred people in attendance, was run by

Rabbi Kenneth Brander. We also ran six Yizkor services, which serviced three hundred and fifty people conducted by Dr. Peter Abelow and Mr. Jonathan Herlands.

Below are excerpts from some of the letters we have received since Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur.

Rosh HaShana

... I have just returned home from your Rosh HaShana free service. I must tell you how much I enjoyed the service. I am new to the city and honestly

appreciate the gesture ...

Yom Kippur

. . . I had been traveling through Europe and just arrived in New York without a ticket for a synagogue. The hospitality and warm welcome to all made me feel as if I was back in synagogue with my family. For all the years I have attended synagogue, it was the only time I was asked to open the doors of the ark.

Thank you ...

... You can't imagine my joy when I walked by the synagogue and saw your sign advertising your free service. In the past I attended high holiday services with my parents in Florida. Sadly, my father passed away this February and I was unable to be with my mother. Thanks to

you, I felt I was where I belonged ...... I want to let you know how much we appreciated the free service and the effort that was put into making a meaningful service. A marvelous job was done in teaching those present. My fiance and I will be joining Lincoln Square Synagogue and will be studying at the Joseph Shapiro Institute, at least one night a week ...

... I am not orthodox, but I can easily relate to your young Rabbi, who did a great job explaining and interpreting the prayers ... This is outreach in the best sense of the word ...

Yizkor Services

... Thank you for making Yizkor services available for the Yom Kippur Holiday. For those of us who are unaffiliated it meant a great deal to be so welcomed for a service so meaningful ...

Thank you to Rabbis Brander, Buchwald and Reich, Danny Mars, Avery Newmark, Harvey Hoffman, Johnny Herlands, Dr. Peter Abelow, Glenn Richter, Avi Horowitz

Paul Holm, Mark Wald, Michael Berger, Rabbi Seymour

Baumrind and all of you who helped make the free

services a success.
