The Prohibition The prohibition against Chametz on Pesach is found in the Torah. It commands every Jew: a. not to eat or drink it, b. not to own it, c. not to possess it. The prohibition applies to even the slightest amount of such Chametz because of the harshness of the penalty prescribed by the Torah — excision, or because of the fact that Chametz is permissible after Pesach — there can be no nullification during Pesach. The Rabbinic prohibition extends to the use even after Pesach of Chametz which belonged to a Jew during Pesach. For this reason, Jewish bakeries and other food stores which do not sell their Chametz before Pesach should not be patronized for approximately a month after the holiday so that no Chametz product which belonged to them during Pesach would be consumed even afterwards. However, this prohibition applies only to products which are in the category of Chametz B'ein (see below). B. The Forms of Chametz 1. Chametz B'ein — Pure Chametz — The combination of any of the five grains mentioned in the Torah (wheat, barley, rye, oats and spelt), or any of their derivatives (such as flour) with water or moisture for a period of eighteen minutes during which the mixture is not stirred, results in Chametz. (This process, described in the Talmud in terms of its appearance, is not identical with the process of fermentation. Chametz appears to be an arbitrarily defined state, not a scientifically definable condition.) Thus, included in this category are bread, cakes and pastries, beer, grain alcohol, and even matzah which was not specially prepared for Passover use. -

Our Way1 Can one talk of a German Jewishness? In the sense that the Divine precepts of the Torah, as laid down in the Written and Oral Law, are equally binding for all parts of the Jewish people, the term “German Jewishness” is as unjustified and misleading as the expressions “Hungarian Jewishness,” “Polish Jewishness,” “Lithuanian Jewishness.” Wherever the Galus has dispersed the members of our people, they were united by the same ideals of sanctity to which they were to dedicate their lives. Divine Judaism embraces all of life in all its manifestations, placing on it the stamp of the Divine Will. This Will obligates us to the most minute adherence to the lawful ordinances enacted by our spiritual leaders, which they formulated for the protection of the Divine Law and its realization in our lives. While Halacha and minhagim have caused differences in practices, which assumed significant proportions in various parts of the Jewish world, they have never in the least endangered the unity of our people that is derived from God's Torah. Still, temperament and taste, as far as admissible within the framework of Torah Law, have not been without influence on the way in which mitzvos are practiced, and have also shaped the character of the various Torah institutions. It is in this sense that we may perhaps speak of a “German Jewishness." Thinking of New York, which has become the melting pot of Jews from all parts of the world, it becomes quite evident that none of the various elements are willing to give up one iota of their characteristic Jewishness, be it Ashkenazic or Sephardic Jews, Lithuanian, Hungarian or Polish Jews — with or without the Chassidic stamp. -

Raised in Frankfurt am Main and a Talmid of the Hirsch Realschule and Frankfurt Yeshiva, Rav Schwab was steeped in the philosophy of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. When Rav Schwab then also became a Talmid of the Eastern European Yeshivos (in Telshe and Mir), Rav Schwab had the great Zechus to come into close contact with many of the Gedolim of pre-war Europe, including such luminaries as the Chofetz Chaim, Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, Rav Joseph Leib Bloch, Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, and Rav Elchonon Wasserman. Rav Schwab mentions some of these encounters in his sefer on the parshios hashovu’o, Maayan Beis HaSho’eivo. The popularity of this sefer, as well as Rav Schwab’s shiurim on Tefilo, Iyov, Yeshayo and Ezra- Nechemia, are testament to Rav Schwab’s influence still being strongly felt, both in our community and throughout the Jewish world. יהי זכרו ברוך 67th ANNUAL DINNER The Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe was the site of our Kehilla and Yeshiva’s 67th Annual Dinner, on Sunday evening, February 19/23 Shevat. Dovid Herbsman and Ezra Hes who took care of the corresponding second readings. Many thanks as well to those individuals who read the Megilla for hospital patients and home bound persons, giving of their time on a very busy day. Matonos LoEvyonim were distributed anonymously to local needy families by the Board of Trustees and, thanks to members of KAJ who donated generously, a significant amount of funds was distributed to help fulfill this important mitzvo of Purim. -

Better yet, come to office hours! Course Description. This course explores Jewish women’s experiences from the seventeenth century to the present, covering Europe, the United States, and Israel. We examine work, marriage, motherhood, spirituality, education, community, and politics across three centuries and three continents. Requirements. Students should do the reading and come prepared for discussion in class. This is a small class and we shall rely on each student for vigorous debate in the classroom! Ongoing conversations on our TED website. Please post a very short (no more than five sentences) comment on the readings on the evening before those texts are discussed 1 in class, for at least ten of the class sessions. Your contributions to our TED conversations will count toward the 10 points of your grade focused on class participation.
