March 1, ‘17 ג' אדר תשע"ז KAJ NEWSLETTER A monthly publication of K’hal Adath Jeshurun Volume 47 Number 6 ,רב זכריה בן רבקה Please continue to be mispallel for Rav Gelley .רפואה שלמה for a YAHRZEIT OF RAV SCHWAB This coming Purim will mark the 22nd Yahrzeit of our late, revered Rav, Rav Shimon Schwab, , who was niftar on 14 Adar I 5755, Purim Kotton. Raised in Frankfurt am Main and a Talmid of the Hirsch Realschule and Frankfurt Yeshiva, Rav Schwab was steeped in the philosophy of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. When Rav Schwab then also became a Talmid of the Eastern European Yeshivos (in Telshe and Mir), Rav Schwab had the great Zechus to come into close contact with many of the Gedolim of pre-war Europe, including such luminaries as the Chofetz Chaim, Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, Rav Joseph Leib Bloch, Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, and Rav Elchonon Wasserman. Rav Schwab mentions some of these encounters in his sefer on the parshios hashovu’o, Maayan Beis HaSho’eivo. The popularity of this sefer, as well as Rav Schwab’s shiurim on Tefilo, Iyov, Yeshayo and Ezra- Nechemia, are testament to Rav Schwab’s influence still being strongly felt, both in our community and throughout the Jewish world. יהי זכרו ברוך 67th ANNUAL DINNER The Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe was the site of our Kehilla and Yeshiva’s 67th Annual Dinner, on Sunday evening, February 19/23 Shevat. Mr. Ori Alpert, Dinner Chairman, started things off by PURIM NOTES noting that this was actually not the first time he had been Matonos Lo’evyonim may be given to the chosen to speak at the Dinner, the first time being as a first- Kehilla Office or members of the Board of grader in Rabbi Emanuel Weldler’s z.l. class. Now, as back Trustees and Synagogue Committee no then, Mr. Alpert explained, he simply could not refuse. Mr. later than the end of davening on Purim morning or go to Alpert commended YRSRH, as well as the Kehilla, which, he https://www.kajinc.org/matonos- said, was an integral part of his own school experience, loevyonim.html. recalling the zechus he had had to accompany Rav Schwab Schedule: to Mincha. Purim Night: Shabbos ends: 6:40pm Megilla: Not before 7:00pm There followed a video presentation by and about Rabbi and 2nd Leining: 9:15pm EST Mrs. Mark and Esther Bauman, Alumni Parents of the Year. Mesiba at Rav Mantel’s Rabbi Bauman stressed the devotion of both of their parents home: 9:45pm to the Kehilla and Yeshiva they loved. Both Rabbi and Mrs. Purim Day DST: Shacharis: 7:25am Bauman attended Breuer’s themselves, as have their Megilla: Not before 8:20am children. While next year the Baumans will experience the 2nd Leining: 10:30am strange sensation of not having a child currently in YRSRH, Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 they plan to keep their connection with YRSRH, just as they have done with the Kehilla all these years. The honorees received impressive plaques, presented by Mr. Alan Ettlinger representing the Kehilla, and Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein representing the Yeshiva. Mrs. Lenore Richter, in her video appearance, noted that a Jewish, Torah education knows no bounds, and is the integral component for the success and continuity of any Jewish yishuv. She herself became involved in helping, first her local Yeshiva and then others, through a feeling of Hakoras HaTov, towards the members of her community who came to help out with her little daughters, aleihen haSholom. A classroom in our pre-school has been dedicated L’Ilui Nishmasan, with the plaque presented to Mrs. Richter at the Dinner. Those present heard only the highest praise of YRSRH and its administration and Hanhala from Rabbi Yehudah Perlman, Chinuch HaBonim Awardee, and only the highest praise of Rabbi Perlman from Rabbi Yehudah Moller, the elementary Yeshiva’s Menahel. Rabbi Moller mentioned Rabbi Perlman’s passion and love that he puts into his teaching, and the extraordinary care he shows to each and every talmid. Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, the evening’s Harbotzas HaTorah Awardee, stressed his appreciation of the Kehilla, which is so deeply connected to all our educational institutions, including the Mesivta, Beis Medrash Yeshiva Gedola and Kollel—including those gentlemen who have retired from the workforce— all of whom form mutually beneficial relationships with one another. While Rav Yaakov Perlow, the Novominsker Rebbe, was unable to attend the Dinner in person, he, via video presentation, spoke of and praised the evening’s Guest of Honor, Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, in glowing terms. Guests heard from and about Rabbi Katzenstein both via video, and his in-person talk which followed, with Rabbi Katzenstein making a heartfelt appeal for our Yeshiva, urging all those who are able, to join him as a “Sar HoEllef” of the Dinner. In his address, Rav Mantel noted the extremely contrasting paths the descendants of Gershom and Eliezer, the two sons of Moshe Rabbeinu, followed. The Rav, citing Chazal, linked their outcomes to the names they were given, names which reflected the circumstances and feelings of Moshe at the time of their respective births. Though we live in Galus, among antagonistic forces and attitudes, the answer—in Chinuch as well as every other sphere of Torah life—must never be compromise. Our Yeshiva's talent was displayed and enjoyed through an excellent performance by the Yeshiva's Boys' Choir (grades 4-7) under the direction of Mr. David Nulman. Dr. Moshe Eisen, the Campaign Chairman, had the last words of the evening, as he looked to the future, announcing the launch of a project for the upgrading of the classrooms and other facilities in the boys’ elementary building (beneath the Shul). The evening's program concluded with Rabbi Katzenstein’s leading the Shir HaMaalos and bensching, but not before the much-anticipated drawing of the annual Automobile Campaign Raffle, once again successfully conducted by Pinchas and Malky Katzenstein. We are delighted to report that the winning ticket belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Alan and Sharon Sommer. The work that resulted in this year's successful Dinner and Journal campaign was almost entirely done in our Yeshiva's executive office, by a small, dedicated group of individuals under the direction of Mr. Jonathan Simons, all of whom deserve our accolades. This group includes the individuals who volunteered countless hours for the various projects, as well as the regular staff members who gave of their time much beyond the call of duty. At the same time we must mention our admiration and Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 gratitude to the Administrative Board for its immense work at this event, and year-round, in its crucial fund-raising position. Many thanks to the "Dinner Crew", under the able direction of Mr. Samuel P. Levi. All those who did the behind-the-scenes work necessary to "run" the dinner efficiently deserve our gratitude. Thanks also go to the editors, proofreaders, typesetters and solicitors for making the Journal a success once again. MR. EUGENE GOLDMAN z.l. The Kehilla mourns the passing of Mr. Eugene Goldman z”l. Mr. Goldman was a member of the Board of Trustees for 15 for nearly two decades, during which he held the office of Treasurer. Mr. Goldman also served with distinction for decades on the Board of the Chevra Kadisha. Mr. Goldman’s deep Torah- knowledge and eloquence were highlighted by his many years of serving as the chairman of the annual Simchas Torah gathering and the annual Chevra Se’uda. יהי זכרו ברוך MATZO BAKING IN ERETZ YISROEL Machine-baked Matzos and Matzo products were once again baked in Eretz Yisroel under our Hashgocho, this year under the labels of Glick’s and Haddar. Rav Mantel went to Eretz Yisroel to supervise and participate in the baking, and was joined by a number of our graduates and others with Kehilla connections learning there, pictured below.
