The last supper The Last Supper is the final meal that, in the Gospel accounts, Jesus shared with his apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. The Last Supper is commemorated by especially on Maundy Thursday. At the last supper, Jesus and his twelve apostles ate unleavened or flat bread and Jesus showed he was humble by washing the feet of all his apostles before the meal. He wanted his followers to be humble and serve the people like him.

This famous painting is by Leonardo Da Vinci and it is found in Milan in Italy.

Maundy Thursday: What does Maundy mean? The Thursday before Easter is known as either Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday. Maundy comes from the word for "command," and refers to Jesus' commandment to the disciples to "Love one another as I have loved you." Jesus was a Jew and followed the Jewish tradition of Passover, which commemorates the Jews leaving Egypt. The Jews had to leave so quickly that they ate bread that hadn’t had time to rise – so it is called ‘Unleavened bread’ Sometimes now we see it in shops as flat bread.

The Queen has a Maundy tradition – she goes out and gives ‘Maundy Money’ as Alms Britain's Queen Elizabeth II distributed "Maundy money" to deserving subjects on Thursday in a long-standing tradition. (April 05, 2012)

Week WB 4 What happened to the Apostle Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zd34wmn Jesus knew that he was going to be betrayed. This story is told in all four gospels in the New Testament – Matthew Mark Luke and John.

Jesus goes to pray to God – Jesus begs God not to let him be killed. And then he says that God will decide the right thing to happen. Three apostles (disciples – the chief followers of Jesus) are in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus. Jesus knew that Judas would bring the Roman Soldiers to find Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas would betray him, and Judas would be paid 30 pieces of silver for doing this.

When the Roman Soldiers tried to take Jesus, Peter cut off one of the soldier’s ears. Jesus performed a miracle and mended this – and although everyone there saw it, Jesus was still arrested and taken for trail before Pontius Pilate the Roman Governor.

When Peter is asked about Jesus by soldiers who come looking for Jesus, Peter denies he knows Jesus. He denies knowing Jesus three times. Jesus was betrayed by his friend Peter. Peter was so frightened by what might happen that he told the soldiers that he didn’t know Jesus. He did not show that he should have morality and do the right thing. His fear for himself meant he was prepared for Jesus to die.

Week WB: 5 What happened on Good Friday?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zjgkq6f Good Friday and Easter Eggs Why do we have a day called Good Friday?

The origins of hot cross buns may go back as far as the 12th century. According to the story, an Anglican monk baked the buns and marked them with a cross in honor of Good Friday. Over time they gained popularity, and eventually became a symbol of Easter weekend. Good Friday

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion.

Good Friday is a day of mourning in church. During special Good Friday services Christians remember Jesus's suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith.

In some countries, there are special Good Friday processions, or re-enactments of the Crucifixion.

Week WB 6 What is the Resurrection?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wnbo2AmS3OI The Easter Story BBC Teach This is a 4min telling which focusses mainly on Jesus burial in the tomb and his resurrection – appearing to his disciples after they found the tomb empty and the stone rolled away.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday marks Jesus's resurrection. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave tomb. The tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance.

On Sunday Mary Magdalene and some of Jesus's disciples visited the tomb. They found the stone had been moved and that Jesus's body had gone. Jesus was seen later that day by Mary and the disciples, and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call this the resurrection.

Time Line

Christian facts timeline Quick fyi

Palm Sunday – Jesus enters as a hero – people calling out Hosanna. People wave and lay down palm leaves.

It was common practice in the ancient world to welcome home a king or war hero by laying out a path of branches for him to ride/walk on - similar to rolling out the red carpet today in English-speaking countries.

Maundy Thursday – The day of Passover. The Last Supper. Late on this evening after the supper, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane which is on the Mount of Olives, to pray to God asking that the future (which he knows) does not happen. Judas leads Roman soliders to Jesus and betrays him for 30 pieces of silver. Peter is so frightened of death (probably by crucifixion) that he denies knowing him. The Roman Soldiers take Jesus away for trial.

Good Friday – Very early in the morning there is a Roman trial led by the governor, Pontius Pilate. He is persuaded by the local people to sentence Jesus to death. Jesus is made to carry a cross through the streets of Jerusalem and finally is crucified on Calvary Hill. Jesus is through to have died around 3pm in the afternoon and is taken down from the cross.

Mary Magdalene – one of Jesus followers is with him for his death and burial.

Saturday – the Sabbath – no one goes out on this day.

Holy Sunday – the disciples go to the tomb where Jesus was taken after he had died. The stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty.

Jesus appears to Peter and he and the other disciples (and Mary Magdalene) realise that Jesus has been resurrected (returned from the dead).
