Keighley Central Demographics (Bradford, England)Keighley Central is a ward in Bradford of , England and includes areas of Highfield, Eastburn, Laycock, Shann Park, Utley, Low Utley, Spring Garden, Steeton, Knowle Park, Broom Hill, Exley Head and Cross Roads.

In the 2011 census the population of Keighley Central was 18,255 and is made up of approximately 50% females and 50% males.

The renovation of Cliffe Castle has had a dramatic impact on the extra-curricular impact on Holy Family as well as the Healthy Living objectives that every school strives to hit. Many subject areas now take students to the park to examine social class in Sociology A-Level or urban regeneration in Geography. This number has increased exponentially since the beautiful renovation. Many of our Yr 7 enjoyed making and creating their own costumes for the opening of the Park and still talk about it to this day.

I do not think people realize how aspirational it is having a wonderful park next door to the school -it gives the students hope and pride.

Time capsule workshops and event June 2017

6 schools local to Cliffe Castle Museum have been working on a project with the park to create a time capsule to be buried in surrounding parkland. After coming to the museum to find out about what a time capsule is, historical objects and materials pupils took part in a timeline celebration event back at the museum where they presented their class objects for the time capsule.

Keighley Past, Present and Future Nov – Dec 2017

The other approach that has worked well in Q4 of funding 16-17 and this Q3 of 17-18 funding is working with schools on meaningful community focused collaborative projects which involve workshops exploring aspects of local history, ‘allowing the children to explore the area in their own way’, teacher Primary and culminating in an event for pupils to share with the wider community and other schools what they have learnt. In November and December, 2 schools, Long Lee Primary and Primary, worked with Cliffe Castle Museum. Pupils visited the museum twice exploring the history of Cliffe Castle park, the making of the museum and consider what the park and museum might be like in 50 years’ time linked to a time capsule, ‘engaging discussions and activities that allowed children to become more involved’ teacher, Long lee Primary School. Pupils used this inspiration in school to create a story and 10 min drama pieces which they performed in front of an audience of 300 including headteachers, council representative and the Lord Mayor of Bradford. ‘Pupils have been totally enthralled with the workshop and are now putting the finishing touches to their production. The children have been very engaged with the project from the start and are eager to share their newly- acquired knowledge about our local history with others, they feel proud to be asked to take part in this special opportunity and are really rising to the challenge’ Assistant Headteacher, Ingrow Primary School.

Literacy Festival – June – July 2018

Cliffe Castle has been really pleased to be part of this first year of Keighley Links Children’s Literacy Festival. The festival has provided us with a real opportunity to work in depth with our local schools, exploring themes and books using the collections and resources in and around Cliffe Castle Museum and Park. The final family day was fantastic, your children and families brought reading to life in a great local setting. We look forward to working with you again.

This has been a great example of the place based curriculum in action.

Feedback from Partners

1. Cliffe Castle Support Group Now the new Cliffe Castle Support Group (CCSG) has been formed enthusiasm is restored and has resulted in a full programme of varied events and activities supported or organised by CCSG. These range from those with an education or cultural focus to well-being activities and catering. As the group grows its pool of supporters it plans to put their skills, knowledge and time to further imaginative uses; taking full advantage of the new potential created by completion of the HLF refurbishment, which has greatly benefited not only the Park but also the Museum.

CCSG is now confident that it can be pro-active as well as reactive, for the good of the community. It already has several people to thank for freely given professional input that is enabling the group to advance its profile and status.

Public response to the efforts of the CCSG has been very good, and the group is greatly encouraged by this. Also the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff has contributed to CCSG members feeling that their involvement is similarly one of passion breeding success. The group hopes for steady and grounded growth and will have a positive attitude towards any problems that may arise. It also acknowledges that without the efforts of the late Cliffe Castle Park Conservation Group and the Friends of Cliffe Castle Museum throughout the HLF process CCSG would not have had such a solid, rich and beautiful foundation on which to work.

2. Airedale Bee Keepers Association (ABKA)

The Bradford Branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society have had a long- standing association with the park and advised on the previous conservatory display of cacti and succulents. We were invited to participate fully in the temporary transfer of plants during redevelopment and on their temporary relocation and care.

For the new conservatory development we have had the pleasure of an even deeper and closer involvement, planning the planting of the new display, sourcing additional plants for the display, then carrying out the planting together with park staff, and we are now performing ongoing maintenance of the display.

Many of the plants in the display were and will continue to be provided by the local Bradford Branch and its members.

We feel that all this involvement is an important factor in the success of the whole project, as it involves directly members of the local community in the work and objectives of the park, and the display also includes information and advice on growing cacti and succulents, on our British Cactus and Succulent Society, and on its local Bradford Branch meetings and activities.

In fact the park staff invited us to hold our August 2018 monthly meeting in the new conservatory cafe to give all our Branch members the opportunity to become more involved in the work of the park.

In our opinion, the new conservatory, and all the other new and redeveloped facilities of the park, are a significant local asset and we have observed their extensive use for children’s educational visits where the displays and information prove very popular.

3. Out in the Aire

Out in the Aire – Nature Play for under 5s

Cliffe Castle has been key to the success of our nature learning programme which has been highly successful partly due to the location of the sessions.

The park is a wonderful learning ground for children and we have been able to use the extremely well maintained areas to teach preschool children about nature.

The staff have been amazing and supported our work since the start and we hope to continue passed our funding grant.

4. Parkrun Briefing to Bradford Council

We are Carol and David Senior, we are the creators and joint Event Directors of the Keighley parkrun which is held at 9am every Saturday in Cliffe Castle Park.

Parkrun is the name given to a collection of five-kilometre running events that take place every Saturday morning in nineteen countries across five continents. Junior Parkrun is a spin-off event which provides a 2 km run for children aged 4–14 weekly on a Sunday morning. The first Parkrun event to launch was the Bushy Parkrun, which was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt in 2004. Originally called the Bushy Park Time Trial, it was renamed Parkrun in 2008. The first event outside of the was launched in Denmark in 2009. Events take place in a range of general locations including city parks, country

parks, national parks, stately homes, castles, forests, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, beaches, promenades, prisons, racecourses and nature reserves. As of 30th May 2018 there were close to 4.5 million registered runners in the world with over a million and a half attending the 533 runs in the UK.

Prior to 2018 Keighley did not have a parkrun, the nearest ones being Skipton and Bradford. Work to develop a parkrun in Keighley started in November 2017. The only park suitable to support a 5k course was Cliffe Castle which was, at that time coming to the end of a large upgrade. The upgrade to many of the paths made them suitable to be run on every week.

With a great deal of support from Bradford Council, development work on the event continued into 2018 and the first Cliffe Castle parkrun took place on the 15th September that year. The first event was attended by 450 runners. To date over 2,000 runners have visited the park to take part in the event.

The work has encouraged our team to try to put back into the park. Every week we complete a litter pick prior to the event and, with the co-operation of the park manager, we have managed to upgrade two paths which were not included in the original scheme.

To say the upgrade to Cliffe Castle has been a success would be a gross understatement. A couple of weeks ago we had, what we call a ‘Takeover’ when six local GP practices came together at the parkrun to offer health screening and advice. Our local hospice Sue Ryder Manorlands works with us in the part to raise awareness of their cause and publicise future events. The café owner is very pleased with the early footfall on a Saturday morning.

This would not have happened without the recent work. The park had become ‘tired’ and locals had no reason to visit. Now the general public have taken it back, the playground and café are often full and there’s a brilliant ‘vibe’ about the place. People are getting out in the fresh air and exercising, one of the founding principles of parkrun.

Sorry if I’m beginning to sound evangelical but I just love the place, I believe it’s made our parkrun the successful event that it is.

5. Sue Ryder, Manorlands Cliffe Castle used to be a place I regularly drove past but never ventured into to the grounds of. In the last couple of years I seem to spend half my life there and regularly recommend others to go there too. Aside from the Cliffe Castle Park run which I sometimes run and usually marshal at each Saturday morning the since the renovation the fundraising team at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice has enjoyed holding two Halloween Monster Dash events there, two Keighley Big K 10K runs, one Hot Cross Bun Duathlon, we did very well with a stall at the Christmas Fayre and we are progressing plans for Proms at the Castle and a local music celebration on 10 August 2019. Although not completely enclosed within the park the events up to know in which Cliffe Castle has been part of have raised in the region of £90,000 for the local care Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice provides. Throughout the planning and execution of these events the brilliant Dan Palmer and the enthusiastic team at Cliffe Castle could not have been more supportive and welcoming and their engagement with us and local groups has completely turned around people's perception of the park.

We are delighted to encourage our supporters to go there as it is now such a nice place to be and this reflects well on us. I am sure that the Heritage Lottery Fund has got excellent value for money with their funding of this scheme, it is exactly what funds should be used for as it has ticked every box. On a personal level I take in AirBnB visitors in my house and Cliffe Castle is on top of my list of places to visit in the local area.
