Through a detailed analysis of the town’s shipping patterns it provides new information and data about the patterns of Southampton’s maritime trade. The development of a database, for the first time quantifying the shipping information published in the Hampshire Chronicle, offers evidence of a complex and wide ranging trade network, which included Southampton’s neighbouring ports. The data analysis carried out for this project shows that, rather than merely a bilateral relationship with London, Britain’s overwhelmingly largest port, Southampton’s maritime trade was multifaceted, with goods imported to the port from domestic and foreign locations and transhipped to other destinations both near and far. The port saw just a small number of regular traders and most vessels called only occasionally, indicating that for many vessels Southampton served as an intermediate stop on longer journeys rather than the main destination. Southampton’s close connections with the Channel Islands were particularly important and there is evidence that the inhabitants of the islands depended on the cargoes shipped from Southampton for their daily lives. The analysis of the Hampshire Chronicle demonstrates how the wars of the late eighteenth century had an impact on the maritime trade of Southampton and on the daily lives of its inhabitants, offering Furthermore, the modified form of francophone Anglicanism which emerged on the islands formed a model for the conformist French churches in England and Ireland. This volume (the first general study of this particular topic) lists the details of several thousand refugee individuals, taken from island sources (wills, records of reconnaissances and abjurations, parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials), English records (Royal Bounty charity, archives of the French Hospital etc.), and sources in France. The volume tackles the difficult task of separating Huguenot refugees from native Channel Islanders (who were also French-speaking and Protestant) and cites documentary evidence for identifying the refugees. The detailed introduction examines the questions of who the refugees were, where they came from, how they escaped, when they arrived on the islands, whether they stayed or moved on, and how much they intermarried with the native islanders. That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 20th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands upon the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Each of these entities includes very different territories, with different legal statuses and varying forms of self-administration and constitutional linkages with the UK. However, they also share similarities and challenges that enable an analysis of these territories as a complete set. The incomplete sovereignty of the Crown Dependencies and BOTs has entailed that all these territories (except Gibraltar) have not been allowed to participate in the 2016 Brexit referendum or in the withdrawal negotiations with the EU. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume that Brexit is not an exceptional situation. In the future there will be more and more relevant international issues for these territories which will remain outside of their direct control, but will have a direct impact on them. Thus, if no adjustments are made to their statuses, these territories will have to keep trusting that the UK will be able to represent their interests at the same level as its own interests.     HAMPSHIRE AND THE COMPANY OF WHITE PAPER MAKERS By J. H. THOMAS, B.A. HAMPSHIRE has long been associated with the manufacturing of writing materials, parchment being made at Andover, in the north of the county, as early as the 13th century.1 Not until some four centuries later, however, did Hampshire embark upon the making of paper, with Sir Thomas Neale (1565-1620/1) financing the construction of the one-vat mill at Warnford, in the Meon Valley, about the year 1618. As far as natural requirements were concerned, Hampshire was well-endowed for the making of paper. Clear, swift chalk-based streams ensured a steady supply of water, for use both as motive power and in the actual process of production. Rags, old ropes and sails provided the raw materials for conversion into paper, while labour was to be found in the predominantly rural population. The amount of capital required varied depend­ ing on the size of the mill concerned, and whether it was a conversion of existing plant, as happened at Bramshott during the years 1640-90, or whether the mill was an entirely new construction as was the case at Warnford and, so far as is known, the case with Frog Mill at nearby Curdridge. Nevertheless Hampshire, like other paper-making counties, was subject to certain restraining factors. A very harsh winter, freezing the water supply, would lead to a cut-back in production. A shortage of materials and the occurrence of Holy days would have a similar result, so that in 1700 contemporaries reckoned on an average working year of roughly 200 days.2 Serious outbreaks of plague would also hamper production, the paper-makers of Suffolk falling on hard times for this reason in 1638.3 Though Hampshire had only one paper mill in 1620, she possessed a total of ten by 1700,4 and with one exception all were engaged in the making of brown paper.

The Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey) are reconstructed separately, as their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) equivalent waters are outside of the UK’s EEZ. Publically available reported landings data from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) are used as a baseline for the reconstruction. Estimates of discarded, recreational and unreported catch are used from peer-reviewed and grey literature as well as government reports to reconstruct the fisheries of the UK. The UK’s total reconstructed catch including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man is 35% higher than the reported landings for the same entities.

Due to its location at the head of Southampton Water, into which the rivers Test and, adjacent to the docks, the Itchen flow, it is well sheltered and being approximately mid-way along the English Channel, the port also uniquely experiences a daily double high tide leading to prolonged periods of high water, thus greatly facilitating the movement of large ships at all states of the tide.
