SPECIAL JOURNALISM PROJECTS 2005 to Present Coordinator and host of the annual Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop, one-day professional training and development conference for journalists, educators and students. First presented in 2005 and annually since then.

Annual Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop The 13th annual event on Sept. 21, 2017, focused on ethics issues relating to fake news. Keynote speaker was NPR’s media correspondent David Folkenflik. Other speakers represented Storyful, and USA Today, Dix & Eaton, the News Literacy Project and more. In-person attendance topped 170 people and the live stream and website reached dozens more. A two-year grant from the Knight Foundation was extended to help fund the “Fake or Fact?” program in 2017.

4

The 14th annual event, scheduled for Sept. 20, 2018, will focus on ethics of coverage of the opioid epidemic. Confirmed keynote speakers will be the three lead journalists from ’s 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning project “Seven Days of Heroin.” The 2016 Media Ethics Workshop focused on social justice with keynote presentation by national immigration rights activist and Pulitzer winner Jose Antonio Vargas. Previous Workshops have addressed journalism and trauma, data mining, entertainment media ethics, sports media ethics and other timely topics. See below for links to the archived proceedings.

The annual Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop is funded primarily by grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (grants awarded in 2015-16, extended to 2017), 2013, 2012 and 2008, and with partnerships and sponsorships from the , the Akron chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, local media, as well as (past or present) partnerships with WKSU-FM, Cleveland Jewish News, the Civic Commons (Cleveland), Journalism Accelerator (Portland, Ore.), the Online News Association and others. Conference coordinating duties include selecting focus, setting agenda, inviting speakers, arranging logistics, coordinating publicity, developing student activities and more. This nationally recognized program combines the expertise of Poynter ethics faculty, national and local media experts and guests to address current, real-world journalism ethics issues. I estimate that more about 2,000 professional and student journalists, educators and others have attended the Media Ethics Workshop in person over the years. From 2008 to 2017, off-site participants could watch a live Web stream of the Workshop. From 2010 to 2013, average number of Web viewers tripled. There are usually about 40 pages of Tweets during each event. From 2011 through 2017, the Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop was a “trending” topic online. The annual Media Ethics Workshop has garnered increased national publicity, which enhances the reputation of the conference itself and Kent’s JMC. The Workshop has been covered in local media including the Akron Beacon Journal, the Plain Dealer, WAKR-AM, WKYC-TV and others, and in national media including E&P, Poynter Online, Paid Content and numerous media ethics publications and websites. Parts of the Workshops have been featured in articles on PressThink, in Nieman Reports, and are available in permanent archives for research and education. I have received queries about the Workshop from professors at the

5

University of Nebraska, the University of Iowa, the University of Oklahoma, Western Michigan University, and from Michigan Radio (NPR). In June 2010, the Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop was selected to participate in the New Media Consortium, an international conference that explored use of new media and technologies, in Los Angeles.

Media @ the Movies Starting in 2015, I organized another ethics-related annual event – Media @ the Movies, which requires selecting a film with a journalism/media theme, obtaining rights to screen it, organizing and publicizing the event and leading a panel discussion on media ethics issues with industry experts after the movie. The films: n 2018: Nightcrawler n 2017: Spotlight n 2016: Merchants of Doubt n 2015: A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power and Jayson Blair at Panelists have included Matt Carroll, formerly of ’s “Spotlight” team; Jim Crutchfield, former publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal and Knight Foundation board chair; David Hertz, vice president at Dix & Eaton, representatives from KSU’s journalism and philosophy departments and others. I received a small grant from the Akron Community Foundation in 2014 to kick off the event in 2015.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE February 1998 to March 2003 Editor and Vice President, Akron Beacon Journal, responsible for day-to-day operation, staffing and content of (then) 150,000-daily and 190,000-Sunday circulation newspaper. Ohio SPJ named the paper, then part of newspaper chain, Best Newspaper in Ohio three of five years I was editor. Annual operating budgets ranged from $11 million to $14 million; newsroom staffing ranged from 150 to 216 FTE. Newsroom was consistently cited as among the most diverse for its size. I was a member of the paper’s senior management team accountable for wide-ranging company projects, including circulation and marketing initiatives, advertising plans, labor relations and legal issues.

Journalism highlights in Akron n 9/11 Coverage: Breaking news and ongoing coverage of Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and plane crash in Pennsylvania. This included the paper’s first Extra edition in 15 years and coverage of war in Afghanistan, local responses and first-year anniversary tributes. n Kids First: Ongoing series focusing on whether Akron does right by its youth population. Started after spate of shaken-baby deaths, the series grew into a newspaper-wide commitment focusing on children. Issues included child health, athletics vs. academics, drinking, and foster care. We continued to emphasize and publicize stories about shaken babies until, eventually, the county opened free daycare slots for those in need. n Power to Pollute: Three-day series explored problems enforcing the Clean Air Act in Ohio and the impact of Ohio’s coal-burning industry on air quality.

7

n Ohio: Look at the State We’re In: Multiple-Sunday series examining issues facing voters in statewide elections. Stories focused on what elected officials have done or could do to position Ohio for a prosperous future. n Promise of Polymers: Series looked at Akron’s claim as the country’s “Polymer Valley” and how the promise of polymers had not materialized. n Child rape law: Stories analyzed why the Summit County prosecutor rarely used the definition of “force” in child rape cases. After stories ran, Ohio’s child rape legislation was changed to strengthen prosecution of suspects. n Established newspaper’s first Public Editor liaison with readers.

Community highlights in Akron n Fire Truck Fund: Part of the Beacon Journal team that helped raise nearly $4 million in less than one month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Campaign enabled Akron to give a ladder truck and three emergency vehicles to NYC. n Millennium Fund for Children: Public face of this charitable giving campaign established in 1999 to help local children’s causes. The endowment has raised more than $1 million and awarded nearly 400 small grants to grassroots programs directly serving children. n Children’s Health Hotline: Conceived and organized free hotline staffed with volunteer doctors and experts from Akron Children’s Hospital. Hotline ran six hours per day, three days during October each of three years. n Akron After School: Developed the “Akron Beacon Junior” curriculum for eight-week after-school program at Harris Elementary School.
