    THE VISHNU PURANA The Vishnu Purana has twenty-three thousand shlokas. Skanda Purana has eighty-one thousand shloka and Markandeya Purana only nine thousand. The Vishnu Purana also has six major sections or amshas, although the last of these is really short. Maitreya and Parashara Once the sage Maitreya came to the sage Parashara and wanted to know about the creation of the universe. And this is what Parashara told him. In the beginning the universe was full of water. But in that water there emerged a huge egg (anda) that was round like a water-bubble. The egg became bigger and bigger and inside the egg there was Vishnu. This egg was called Brahmanda. And inside Brahmanda there were the mountains and the land, the oceans and the seas, the gods, demons and humans and the stars. On all sides, the egg was surrounded by water, fire, wind, the sky and the elements. Inside the egg, Vishnu adopted the form of Brahma and proceeded to create the universe. When the universe is to be destroyed, it is Vishnu again who adopts the form of Shiva and performs the act of destruction. Let us therefore salute the great god Vishnu. There are four yugas or eras. These are called krita (or satya), treta, dvapara and kali. Krita era consists of four thousand years, treta of three thousand, dvapara of two thousand and kali of one thousand. All the four eras thus pass in ten thousand. And when all the four eras have passed one thousand times each, that is merely one day for Brahma.

Prince Dhaninivat, Kromamun Bidyalabh The commentary by His late Majesty King Rama VI on the Theatre of Siam, published as Group XIV in Siam and its Productions, Arts) and Munufactures; a Descriptive Catalogue of the Siamese Section at the International Exhibition of Industry and Labour held in Turin April 29-November 19, 1917 edited by Colonel Gerini, classified contempo­ rary entertainments into five types: the Like, the Hun, the Nav, the Lagor and the Khan. The Like, derived from some kind of Islamic recitation, had been popularised, losing its original purport of religion and becoming merely a parody of the more dignified and graceful Lagor. The Hun was at the time of the King's writing, and very much more so now, almost non-existant. It survived in a simplified form of the Hun Krabok (cylindrical marionettes) with a contemporary repertoire to suit the more popular taste as the Nora of the Peninsula resorts now to topics of present-day happenings: as the coup d'etat of 1932 with its leader represented as a clown. The Nav proper has almost disappeared, though like the Hun it survives in name through the southern variety called Na,.,:; Taluv which bears no resemblance to its classical prototype save that it too is exhibited on a screen. The royal author went on to describe the Lagor and the Khan which he rightly considered as the legitimate drama. The material here has been carefully studied and so well presented that there is hardly anything to add or improve upon.

Indrajit informs demons about his adventure of captivating both Rama and Lakshmana by his net work of serpentine arrows. Indrajit strikes the other monkey-chiefs like . Nila, Mainda, Dvivida, Hanuman, Gavaaksha and Angada as also Jambavan. When Sugreeva looks depressed on seeing the plight of Rama and Lakshmana, Vibhishana consoles him, saying that Rama is not going to die. He also reassures the disheartened monkeys and infuses confidence in them. Indrajit, in the meanwhile, informs Ravana that both Rama and Lakshmana have been killed. Ravana applauds his son for his daring act.     Best of Hitopadesha Part - I Knowledge—the Highest Form of Wealth by Satyanarayana Dasa The Backdrop About 1,500 years ago the King of Iran got hold of a book that contained the secret of how to raise the dead by means of rasayana, an elixir of life. The book explained the procedure to extract the elixir from herbs and trees growing on the high mountains of India. Eager to sample this elixir, the King sent his chief minister on a quest for the prescribed herbs and trees. In India, the minister was well-received and aided by the sages. He scoured the mountains for the herbs and trees to make the elixir. No mixture he made, however, could bring the dead back to life. Finally, the disappointed minister concluded that the information was false. Greatly distressed about returning empty-handed and disappointing his king, the minister asked his hosts what to do. They led him to a famous philosopher, who once searched in vain for the same elixir, and in the end discovered that the elixir was actually a book. The philosopher explained that the story about the elixir was allegorical. The high mountains in the story represented the wise and learned men of lofty intellect; the trees and herbs, which are the products of the mountains, indicated the various writings of those sages; the elixir itself denoted the wisdom extracted from the sages’ writings, which revived the dead intelligence and buried thoughts of ignorant materialistic men. Relieved and elated, the minister begged a copy of the book from the philosopher, translated it, and returned to his king.
