Nancy Easterlin 261 Nancy Easterlin PSYCHOANALYSIS AND “THE DISCIPLINE OF LOVE” n the past three decades, psychological approaches to literature, Iincluding feminist interpretations, have been overwhelmingly psy- choanalytic, and this is still the case even as cognitive psychology emerges as a relevant and fruitful secondary field for literary scholars. The dominance of psychoanalysis holds true for Wordsworth scholar- ship, an area in which, given the poet’s developmental concerns, psychological orientations seem particularly apropos. Unfortunately, Freud’s most basic assumptions about infant experience, still credited in various forms by Lacanian and many feminist scholars, are no longer accepted by developmental psychologists, who regard the infant as a self-organizing system engaged in a fundamentally productive and social relationship with his primary caregiver, usually his mother. By contrast, psychoanalysis, which opposes union with the mother in the state of primary narcissism to separation and individuation, envisions the mother- infant relationship as paradigmatically conflicted. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository SEMINAR ON THE DUAL UNITY AND THE PHANTOM THE NECESSITY OF INTRODUCING THE DUAL UNITY INTO METAPSYCHOLOGY NICOLAS ABRAHAM Translated by Tom Goodwin What use is the dual unity? My response: anasemia, which is to ask, how is this analytical concept structured and what specific analytical problem is being addressed? The answer here is that it transforms the symbol into metaphor. This additional step is metapsychological in that it concerns a system of concepts that has no status in language other than as the foundation—the condition of possibility and ultimate recourse—of everything we consider to be human. No logical or ontological status can be granted to this construction, and yet it is not arbitrary..1 It is necessitated by clinical requirement, to transform what appears as symbol into analogy, into metaphor. Analytical listening begins the moment when we hear symbols, in place of what the patient says. But what then is the symbol? It is the result of an operation that remains hidden. What appears for example in dream symbolism is in reality a series of enigmas that allude to something different from their apparent meaning. However, every symbol is originally a metaphor. It is only by a forced forgetting, through the repression of its metaphoric origin, that it becomes a symbol, which, of course, implies a mechanism of repression. When the two “parts” come together, 1 the symbol ceases to be a symbol. But where does the metaphor come from? It comes from the incorporation of the original detachment that is overcome. -

'West African' Dance Class in Philadelphia
DANCING DOWN THE FLOOR: EXPERIENCES OF ‘COMMUNITY’ IN A ‘WEST AFRICAN’ DANCE CLASS IN PHILADELPHIA ______________________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board ______________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in Dance ______________________________________________________________________ by Julie B. Johnson ______________________________________________________________________ Dissertation Date July, 2016 Dissertation Approvals: Dr. Kariamu Welsh, Dissertation Advisor, Dance Dr. Karen Bond, Dance Dr. Patricia Melzer, Women’s Studies/German Studies Dr. Kimmika Williams-Witherspoon, Theater !ii © Copyright 2016 by Julie B. Johnson All Rights Reserved !iii ABSTRACT 'Community' is a multivalent concept, subject to a plurality of contexts and con- structs that can alter and shift its meaning. As a dance artist, I have encountered myriad understandings and manifestations of 'community' through dance practice, and perceive an intrinsic relationship between dance and 'community.' A 'West African' dance class in Philadelphia — designated as a 'community-based' class by the instructor — provides a rich opportunity to excavate this relationship. The class, one of several offered through- out the city, is located in West Philadelphia. It is an intergenerational class attended by a diverse demographic of participants (race/ethnicity, gender, profession, class, age, abili- ty, etc.) with an array of motivations and goals for participating in class (as made evi- dent through conversations and interviews). All are welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience or skill level in 'West African' dance. My dissertation is a qualitative research study that examines participant experi- ences and interpretations of 'community,' with attention paid to the socio-cultural/politi- cal context of 'West African' dance in the United States, specifically in Philadelphia. -
Frances Tustin Today
Downloaded by [New York University] at 03:54 14 August 2016 Frances Tustin is an icon within British Object-Relations psychoanalysis. It is good to have in this book a sustained tribute to her ideas and to their significant and enduring contribution. Her tradition of learning fundamental truths from autistic conditions remains lively, productive and inspiring. Tustin’s work sustains one of the founding principles of Object-Relations work – that the depth of psychoanalytic ideas is enhanced by rigorous work with children. As that long- held view – going back to the innovative work of Anna Freud and Melanie Klein – has weakened over time, granting a more exclusive place to work with adults, it is important to have this book to redress that imbalance. This collection draws us back to the fundamental questions about working with another mind. How can one conceive of the object relations of a mind that can barely sustain the possibility of relating to others? It is commonplace to regard psychoanalysis as a body of knowledge derived from what goes wrong, but what can be learned about a mind that has gone so radically and despairingly wrong? It is evident from the wide range of papers presented here that indeed much can be learned from the work with children, contributing that which is not accessible in the work with adults alone. This book is a celebration of clinical and therapeu- tic confidence from those who have actually persevered in the presence of severe autism, those who have managed to form a joint venture with their suffering young patients, both large and small. -
